Highlights from Rachel's days in college include having a class down the hall from Chase Daniel and having NCAA wrestling champion Ben Askren hold the door open for her at Brady Commons, Mizzou's student center. She spent time covering Mizzou basketball, softball and baseball while working for the Columbia Missourian and is excited to return home to Southeast Missouri to cover local sports for semoball.com.
Rachel has covered three Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournaments for the Southeast Missourian and semoball.com, and she'll see you courtside again this year.
(Sorta) Live Blog: Novak Djokovic is on court!
I mentioned in my first blog here on semoball that I am a big fan of professional tennis, particularly on the men's side. So, live from my desk, I present the Novak-Djokovic-is-on-court blog.
Novak is my absolute favorite. (The word "absolute" here is not an unnecessary intensifier. He is my guy, and no one else come close.)
Anway, when I started this blog he was just walking onto the court for his first match at the U.S. Open. One short, unscheduled meeting later, he is up a break on Ivan Lubicic. Lubicic, as most tennis fans would know, is a former top-10 player.
I'm going to update this blog throughout the match, which will hopefully be a quick and easy one for Novak. I'm always nervous when he steps onto the court, especially after his inexplicable losses at Wimbledon and the French Open, but things seem to be going well so far today. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.
Update 1: The first set goes to Novak 6-3. I missed some of the action, but it seems to be an impressive start for Novak. Granted we're talking about the first round of a grand slam and he is the No. 4 player in the world, but Lubicic can accidently play well on occasion.
Upate 2: And there is another early break for Novak in the second set. I'm glad this match is shaping up to be routine, but I'm afraid this blog might suffer. I guess I could point out that Novak clearly has a fresh haircut, which looks nice. I'm kind of ambivalent about the orange and red shirt he's debuting.
Update 3: After Novak went up a second break in the second set the announcer on the feed I'm watching said Lubicic needs to show some emotion because Novak "can be rattled." Wow. Thanks for the positive thoughts.
Update 4: Novak takes the second set 6-1. I'm thrilled with how boring this match has been. Blissfully boring.
Update 5: Novak is doing his best to make this interesting, unfortunately. It's 0-30 at 3-3 in the third on Novak's serve.
Nevermind. All is well. 4-3 on serve.
Update 6: There's the break for Novak. He'll serve for the match.
One hour and 37 minutes and Novak is through to round two. No drama. I'll spare you the (sorta) live blog of the Sam Querry match, but I'll be keeping my eye on the American this afternoon. I hope some of you will be doing the same. I need some people to talk about tennis with...
Have a good evening.
