Highlights from Rachel's days in college include having a class down the hall from Chase Daniel and having NCAA wrestling champion Ben Askren hold the door open for her at Brady Commons, Mizzou's student center. She spent time covering Mizzou basketball, softball and baseball while working for the Columbia Missourian and is excited to return home to Southeast Missouri to cover local sports for semoball.com.
Rachel has covered three Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournaments for the Southeast Missourian and semoball.com, and she'll see you courtside again this year.
Class 1: Lesterville-Lutheran
We're just about to get underway. Lutheran was swept in its first match, so you'd think Lesterville needs to sweep them here to for their title hopes.
Game one:
7-3 Lesterville. Timeout Lutheran. Almost finished up with administrative stuff again. More details to come.
9-4 Lesterville. Chelsey Holland combines with a teammate for another stuff on the day.
11-8 Lesterville. Lutheran went on a run, but Jessica Woodcock's kill just got the Bearcats a sideout.
I'm not sure what is going on, but things have gotten very loud on the Winona-Osceola side of the gym.
14-8 Lesterville. Back-to-back kills for Taylor Cook, who just got to the front row.
18-8 Lesterville. Everything is different with Cook in the front row for Lesterville.
19-8. Timeout Lutheran.
20-8 Lesterville. Ace for Stephanie Hill.
21-8 Lesterville. Another kill for Cook. Just now noticed that she's a sophomore. Yikes.
22-10 Lesterville. They finally got something past Holland's block, a tip out of the middle.
24-11 Lesterville. Cook again.
25-11 Lesterville. Ashlyn Woods finished the game with a kill of her own on the outside.
Game two:
1-0 Lesterville. Chelsey Holland with a kill of an overpass. Must be amazing to be 6 feet tall and not have to jump to kill a ball. So jealous.
4-1 Lesterville. Lutheran is fighting their own mistakes.
4-3 Lesterville. Bearcats' coach Betsy Middleton is back off the bench trying to pump her team up. There's a lot of intensity coming from the Lesterville sideline.
7-6 Lesterville. Cook is stuck in the back row for now.
8-6 Lesterville. Scratch that. Woodcock with the kill and the rotation gets a little more friendly for the Bearcats they should pull away a bit now.
9-6 Lesterville. Kill for Cook.
12-6 Lesterville. Timeout Lutheran. I should mention here than Ashlyn Woods is putting up some beautiful sets for Cook. They look the same every time, and, since Lutheran can't stop the attacks, that is a good thing.
14-6 Lesterville. Another ace for Hill.
15-9 Lesterville. To answer a question from jckk4, the Bearcats have three seniors on the court right now.
17-10 Lesterville. Lutheran missed a serve then sent a hit out of bounds.
17-13 Lesterville. Sarah Reyelts and her jump serve just led to a mini-run for Lutheran, but the Bearcats just managed a sideout.
19-15 Lesterville. The Bearcats were in the net on the last point, and Lutheran's got a little hop in its step right now, so to speak. And Cook is in the back row. You really can't overstate how important that is for Lesterville.
To ThaVILLE, I'll check on Winona-Osceola as soon as this game is over. I can't keep up with both. I can barely keep up with the action as it is...sorry! I'll post as soon as I know.
21-18 Lesterville. Timeout Lesterville. The teams just played a long, ugly point that ended with Lutheran winning a jousting contest at the net.
22-18 Lesterville. Big time kill for Holland in the middle.
22-19 Lesterville. Lutheran responds with a kill just inside the back line.
23-19 Lesterville. But the last Bearcat rotation brought Cook to the front. And she gets a kill.
25-20 Lesterville. The game ends with Lutheran in the net.
The Bearcats did what they needed to do. I'm running to the other side to check on the Winona-Osceola match while Scott City warms up for its final match of pool play. A sweep and the Rams have earned themselves one more shot at Hermann.
