Advance's big win helped them. Chaffee is a little lower than might be expected. I would have had the bottom two swapped also. No doubt about 1 thru 4.

How long has it been since Chaffee was seeded No. 10 or better?

I would swap the last 2 and also put Scott City above Bell City. I think 1-6 are no brainers. 7-10 could be interesting and any of those teams could beat any other team in that group on any give night.

Can't argue with the seeds, especially 1-6. I agree Advance's big win helped them, and not saying this is what happened at Advance, but I hope it does not set a precedent for coaches to try to run up a score just prior to a seed meeting. In my opinion, there probably is not 10 points difference in the 7-13/14 seeds on any given night. Most of those teams seem pretty even, judging by the early games this year, so the consolation bracket is to whoever can string together 3 good games. Scott County is clearly the favorite, do not see anyone challenging them, unless this transfer into Cape is elgible, and he is as good as they say. The 2-5 teams also seem even, judging by the scores at Sikeston. Don't see any small school with an upset of a top seed, have not seen Oran this year, but doubt if they can hang with Notre Dame/Charleson for 5th.

Not ready to place my predictions yet but what fun is it if you don't predict a few upsets.

Switch Meadow Heights and Chaffee, and it would look about right.

The transfer for Cape will not be able to play but i'm assuming he is as good as they say since the southeast missourian wrote that he is being scouted by several D1 programs today at the end of the Cape vs Sikeston article.

Did Delta beat Meadow Heights? There is no way they are a better seed than Meadow Heights. I would put Chaffee and Meadow Heights both above Delta and how can you not seed Kelly last? No offence intended.

Idk why you'd switch meadow heights and Chaffee... Quite simple actually, Chaffee beat meadow heights last year, Chaffee did not lose one player and meadow heights lost their best player hubler... So ur statement has no validity

Its a shame to see Kelly go winless last year and be the 15 seed this year, but when the best athletes in your district don't go to your school, it is bound to happen. It is sad that people in the Benton community and people in the district don't have enough pride to want to see their home school thrive again in Boys sports. They send their kids to Notre Dame and then complain about Kelly not being any good. Kelly and Scott City used to be 2 of the most consistent year in and year out solid programs and now they are being depleted of their athletes. Very sad!

Oak Ridge has felt your pain the last several years.Luckily we had some of our athlete's stay put. So That we could build our program into a winner.Told the boys it's better to build a winner than to join a winner.

It's a shame tolbert didn't stay there... Last year they couldve had tolbert light Thomas... And remember even without tolbert.. They were Bering Jackson late in the 3rd quarter of the Xmas tournament before their lack of depth caught up to them

Late in the 4th Oak Ridge up by ten Should have put it away. Lack of blocking out on freethrows cost them the game. 2 years ago could have had tolbert light thomas tolbert. couldve been something special. But no use crying over spilled milk.

While losing good talent to other schools has really hurt Kelly, since Cory Johnson left they have been dealing with weak coaches as well. They are the most unfundamental team you will see. That has to be coached early, like in jr high. If you have followed the program for the last 6 years you understand why its as bad as it is now. They dont have the talent to win 20 games or even 10-15, but going winless is unexcuseable.

Kelly's schedule is a tough one. They play Portageville, Caruthersville, New Madrid, Cape Central, Charleston, Sikeston, SCC, Jackson, and Bloomfield. Those are an automatic "L" for most teams in this area regardless of the talent they have unless you are one of the teams listed. Getting beat by a large amount night in and night out is tough on the kids. I understand that they are in Class 3 but man what a tough schedule to play.

True, but they also play Chaffee, Bell City, Delta, Woodland, Scott City and East Prairie. Teams they should be able to beat. They are getting beat faily easily by some of these schools too.

What I am saying is that taking a beating night in and night out has to have the teams morale go down and any confidence the players did have is all gone. It has to be hard for a team w/o that much talent to get motivated for practice if they are playing two of the teams I listed earlier in the same week. Those practices that week are useless and the team doesn't get any better during practice or the games.

I understand that but Kelly has competed with and even beaten these teams until the last few years. I have seen just about every Kelly game for the past 6 years. Yes, the talent level is down, but not as much as the record would indicate. You have to teach them the fundamentals of the game at a young age and that hasnt been happening. Teach them to play hard, play defense and teach them discipline. I hope the new coach will change these things.

i think you have to give credit to some of these other schools as well...5-10 years ago you could look at schools like maybe a oak ridge, chaffee, zalma, etc on your schedule and simply mark down a win. a lot of these teams are a lot more competive now and are not just easy wins.

Kelly is more athletic then last year, they will win a game or two. The best athletes at Kelly have generally come out of the north end of the district, many from the Junior High Schools of New Hamburg (Kelso C-7)and St. Denis. These students are now not only going to Notre Dame, but Oran and Scott City as well. Losing these students has also hurt the Kelly schools grade performance, as a very high percentage of those students also ranked at the top of their class. The student's at Kelly have ACT scores that are abyssmal. Not much there anymore to draw a student athlete, at least on the boys side.

Could someone please explain something to me. How can a class 1 school be as good as Scott County Central School is? A class 1 school can have an enrollment of no more then 119 students. With 12 players on that team that's 10% of the entire school. Class 5 schools start at 1175 and go up. That's at least a 1000 more students enrolled at Cape or Jackson. And S.C.C. is seeded #1? Can you get that good without recruiting?...... Practicing with the entire team starting with 7 hour gym class and going to 7 or 8 o'clock everynight?....... All summer long practices has to be part of their overall schedule?.... I can understand a small school wanting to be committed to a winning team. As long as things are done on the up and up then I tip my hat to them and say job well done. But these days it just makes one wonder

They had some great teams and players back in the day and those parents are moving back there so their kids will go to the same school. It just happened to end up that all the kids are around the same age. Also, if you look at the team from 2 years ago 4 of 5 starters were all cousins with one more cousin getting considerable amount of time off the bench. Small world...

I will assure you there is no recruiting goin on. Maybe it just so happens scc is right next to sikeston which happens to be the second best team in the area..... Behind scc

I hope this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way but there is no recruiting going on... follow the names of scott county's history and you'll see the same names reappearing every 15-20 years which means what semosports said.. parents have kids and they all live in the same place... it's not like they have a bunch of random names playing... it's johnsons, porters, timmons... heres what i hope doesn't offend anyone.. I don't know each kid's situation but most of these kids come out of haywood city which i've heard is a rough area and some of them may not be as well off as others and all they have is their school, their teammates, and a basketball and a goal... that's probably why they are always so good... when history and expectations meet with young kids that are willing to work hard success is going to follow

Hats off to Delta. Once again someone gets proven wrong in a high school sport.

Scott City, Kelly, and Woodland. all class 3 schools rounding out the bottom 3 seeds. . . and have been for a few years. What gives? I know woodlands best players a'rent going to Notre Dame.

My bold prediction. SCC beats Advance by 50+ . . . All other teams forfeit and go home after the second day.

Crash, nothing gives. It's just that bubbles of talent are cyclical at the high school level.

It was just a few years ago that Kelly was a top-five team in this tournament and Bell City was one of the top three or four teams in all of Southeast Missouri (and a couple years before that, I think Advance won this tournament outright).

As for somewhat larger schools, five or six years ago, Poplar Bluff was amazing with Tyler H., and Jackson went 22-3 or something ridiculous but didn't make the playoffs. And as I recall, Charleston was considered unbeatable in the Christmas tournament. Sikeston and SCC were not nearly as good then as they are now.

Good point. The talent comes and goes in cycles in all high school sports. It's a production of what effort is put forth at the youth level. Those coaching influences at home and in the gym go a long way.

3redhawkefan3.... Having parents that were good basketball player 15 years ago is no reason to say their children are going to be good players today. If there is maybe a boy's club or a local youth traveling team these kids have played together on since they have been very young makes more sense to me. If that has been the case one can understand their above average abilities. But if that is not the case you would have to agree with me that to draw good talent from such a small pool of kids is pretty mind boggling.

Over the last 30-40 years SCC has with the exception of a few years after Cookson retired the first time, always had good teams with talented players. And a few years a truly great player comes along like a Timmons or Porter, and they become a great team. Part of it is raw talent, good coaching, tradition, but if you find the root cause it is probably that those kids spend hour after hour in the gym or playground, doing what makes any player better-practice.

Or that they had ron Cookson as a coach!?!? Bobs just trying to stir something up. There good and they always have been.

my kid prolly would have been on KHS varsity with significant playing time as a sophomore. In fact his entire 8th grade BB team @ St Denis went 17-1 and would probably have been on the Varsity as sophomores at KHS. I've seen who they would have been vying playing time with. Guess where all starting five went to school. And none of them are playing for ND anymore. In fact only two made the Freshman team.

My son played one year at ND and guess who was most depressed when he threw in the towel? ME.

He prefers to attend ND for what it offers him down the road.

Good for him.

If you are happy with KHS outside of their lousy Boys BB team than that should be Good Enough for you.

Yes, St Denis and C-7 kids at one time resisted the draw to ND, but Kelly has progressively through the years lessened its appeal. I will not offer any reasons. However, Oran has been able to retain most of the GAngel students. Go figure. I apologize for spitting on KHS but Oran must be doing something right that Kelly and Scott City aren't.

Maybe the Catholics in the Benton and Kelso communities as a whole see more value in the Catholic school experience. Kelso more so and these are in C-7 district or Scott City. I do not see that changing from here on out. It is a runaway train.

Kelso has pretty much always been on board, but I clearly see the Benton Catholics enlightenment as a major contributor to KHS Boys demise. I know that two best of St.Denis 8th graders this year will attend ND as well.

Maybe the football will be KHS saving grace. I can easily see KHS turning the corner there by bringing back the Benton kids and even draw those New Hamburgers inclined to attend Oran.

can you give me reasons that makes ND offer a better education? what are you basing this on? you cant say that their test scores, ACT or whatever are better so that makes their education better. You have to realize the kids who go to ND usually are kids that come from a kid home with 2 parents, therefore usually these kids are better all around because they are better raised. It isnt anything ND does differently that makes these kids smarter than the average kid at a public school. i bet if you took the top 5-10 kids that are at the top of their class in the local public schools and compare them to the top 5-10 at ND you wouldnt see much difference. It is just the bottom 15-20 kids at public schools that bring down scores and everything, because usually these are the lower class kids who come from single parent households and usually they are in trouble most of the time rather worrying about learning.

Now the teachers, please dont tell me the teachers are better at ND, more than half of the teachers teaching at ND are not even certified in the area they are teaching.

Those kids grow up in a tiny little town, they do pull talent from a small area, and no, those kids don't grow up playing aau or any kind of traveling ball because they don't have the money or the parents to take them around to play them kind of games.. I don't think you follow this areas high school sports very well or at least scc.. If you would, you would see what I'm talking about, kids with the same names, and see what kind of clothes those kids are wearing when they aren't on the court.. Those kids play ball 24/7 all year around.. They don't have football, soccer, they just started track, their baseball team is improving but it's not the same group of kids playing baseball as basketball. When the only sport you play is basketball and expectations are so high they work at it all the time and that's why they are good. The basketball players walk out to watch the baseball games usually at about 4:30.. So they are always in the gym

Not buying that 3redhawk3fan3 playing bball on local playgrounds 24/7 doesn't make you a star. Doing that usually makes you pick up bad habits. No I haven't been following southeast missouri basketball very long. But I do know that there is alot of schools in southeast missouri in the same situation. That being a small school with poor backgrounds and the only major sport is basketball. So I ask what makes this class 1 school regular beat larger class schools. In their pass two championship winning season they have beating all their class 1 competition in district and championship games by and average of around 40 points.

Bobma2000, you really haven't been around here long. The Johnson, Porter, Timmons kids have been the SCC team for decades now. The same guys who won over 50 games straight now have kids who are under the same amount of talent. Most all of them are related. I remember a few years ago that they used to have a team in AAU run by Melvin Porter that was all of the cousins between Sikeston and SCC that was one of the three best in the state. Combine the athleticism they are born with with the hard work they put in and you have one of the best basketball programs in the state of Missouri regardless of class.

martyrfarker, you are so far out there it is unreal. I will take it that your son is a junior at ND. Wonder how I know that? Well I played against him in 8th grade. I hope that you aren't saying that ND has better academics than all other schools around here. I can't speak for the rest of the schools but i can for Central. Bigriver already has said most of the things that were needed but I'm talking from a students perspective that has seen what both schools offer. Yes, ND has a harder overall course than Central but only because Cape also has to provide for the students who frankly just don't care. Central's hardest on campus classes ARE harder then ND's hardest, that is a fact, but a student who is academically inclined to do so can elect to leave campus and take classes at SEMO. I really hate how I got so far off topic but when you brought academics into this i couldn't resist.

I remember an article from last year after SCC won state and Otto and Bobby were talking about how as kids they would always be playing against each other and against their fathers. They said that their dads never took it easy on them because they wouldn't improve unless they were pushed to do so. having great genes plus parents who want you to succeed play a big part in how a child developes.

Marty.....I went to Kelly High School and I'm proud of it and always will be. I also am a 2 degree holding college graduate and played 3 years of professional baseball and was able to achieve all of this despite the lack of education i supposedly recieved at Kelly. Can I blame a kid for wanting to go to a school that has 4 times the budget of their home public school? No...not to mention the private donations they get. But whatever happened to wanting to be the guy to put your school on the map? Not just another brick in the wall at ND? I get the priveleage of walking in the Kelly gym and have pride with what me and my teammates accomplished, not to mention the accomplishments we have made to society. I don't care if you go to school for free or pay god knows how much.....you can make something of yourself from anywhere. So keep eating from your silver spoon, and spit on Kelly all you want, but I have more heart and pride for my school and I will support them no matter if they are 0-20 or going to state in everything on a 2 million dollar budget. The 86 kids I graduated with at Kelly, we basically grew up together and still have a bond that you only get from a small rural, poor school, and I'm proud of every single one of them, and nobody will ever stop me.

I'm still not buy the gene thing SemoSports. So you're telling me Scott County Central is now developing a super race of basketball players. the next generation of Johnston, Porter, Timmons children will be able to shoot half court baskets as good as they shoot 3's now. If they keep it up the Semo Headline in the year 2050 will read "Scott County Central Wins 50th" state title by learning to fly from half court to under the basket without dribbling. When ask the coach said it must be in their genes. Ha Ha Ha..... In my opinion if your not recuiting and the desirer of teams are close then the difference lies in the teams ability. The only way a teams ability gets better then another school is a lot of extra practices with good coaches And I mean a lot of extra practicing. As long as their practices don't violate any MSHSAA rules more power to them. But don't say it's in the genes

Bobma2000, of course hard work is a part of it. But coming from a family of athletes is going to help you out as well. I don't know why you are so convinced that SCC recruits just because of their small number of students but it sounds more like envy to me. I'm not going to get into a biology lesson on how traits are passed from parents to offspring but some kids are born with more natural athleticism. If I or you worked on basketball the same number of hours that Otto Porter has, I would still easily pick him to win a game of one-on-one.

So everyone, according to bobma, scott county central has been the number 1 recruting school classes 1-3 for the past 40 years... theres no other way they could've won any titles.... Bobma, would you read your post and think before you speak... Why do you think Scott County is successful in basketball, and hayti is always good in football.. small schools that have nothing more than a body, energy, and a ball are going to do what they can and when you don't grow up with a computer or ps3 and you have a basketball goal and a basketball it's what you are going to do and that's why they are good.. I never said SCC recuited. I pointed out facts as to what I think makes one team better then another and that I think because a dad or mom is a good b.b. player does not automatically mean your children will be. I pointed out the fact that SCC is not the only school with a poor backgrounds. I also pointed out the law of averages when it come to having a good team from a class 5 school vs.class 1 school. If SCC is winning games and doing it by MSHSAA rules I say good job. I'm just wondering how the are doing it.

It makes me wonder how SCC does it..... Saying you wondered who killed somebody and then giving scenario on who or how is was done does not say they did it. It's trying to figure out how it is done that's all no more no less

I'm not saying that SCC has the best athletes in the area but their good athletes make grades and stay off the streets. Many of the greatest athletes don't even play because they aren't eligible and some just don't think that it will be worth their time so they don't even try a sport.

I really wanted to pick a small school like Oran or Leopold to upset a perennial powerhouse like Charleston but I'll settle for a tight game because I really don't think this is the year.

Notre Dame lost to Jackson earlier in a tough game. I think it will be hard for Jackson to beat them twice in a row so i'll go with ND here.

Oak Ridge has a good chance to win the first game in my opinion with Brett Thomas but Advance also has a star athlete in Darren VanGennip (is this the same kid that played for leopold?). I think Advance wins and Oak Ridge may have a tough game in the championship of the consolation.

You other schools should feel sorry for SCC, they actually lost good players. If Melvin Porter had not moved to Sikeston, they would have had Otto, Michael, and Corey all on the same team.

A lot of people across the state think SCC recruits because they have a Sikeston address. They think SCC is a private school in Sikeston.

this scc recruiting crap is so dumb. u have to be pretty dumb to believe this. the reason they have been so dang good the last few years is simple. some of the great players from 25 years ago or so had boys who turned out to be real good to!

Winning breeds success, and losing breeds failure. Right now SCC, Sikeston, Notre Dame are riding the wave of success, and kids (and parents) are drawn to that success. I don't think those schools recruit, I just think winning draws in good players. Unfortunately, Kelly & Scott City are suffering through some tough seasons, which causes some kids to leave the program, which further decimates it.

I really wanted to pick a small school like Oran or Leopold to upset a perennial powerhouse like Charleston but I'll settle for a tight game because I really don't think this is the year.

Notre Dame lost to Jackson earlier in a tough game. I think it will be hard for Jackson to beat them twice in a row so i'll go with ND here.

Oak Ridge has a good chance to win the first game in my opinion with Brett Thomas but Advance also has a star athlete in Darren VanGennip (is this the same kid that played for leopold?). I think Advance wins and Oak Ridge may have a tough game in the championship of the consolation.

Just some thoughts. What do you guys think? Anyone see any surprises? maybe not for the championship but other finishes?

Ok I'll give ya my quick thoughts even though I haven't seen many teams play this year. I reserve the right to change my mind at any time (even after the tournament is over)

1st: SCC over Jackson

3rd: Charleston over Cape

5th: ND over Oran

Consolation: Chaffee over Oak Ridge

Just real quick on scc. If they recruited, tell me why I played the exact same team from 7th grade to 12th grade in basketball? I graduated last year and in my year book from Jr high...8th grade...there is a pic of Otto, Bobby, and Stewart Johnson playing defense. I also have pics of the same kids in grade school. Yeah, they really recruit. All their family basically cares about is basketball. As for the tourney, scc wins no doubt. That's all that really matters lol

The player from Advance may be related to the player from Leopold but not the same. The Leopold player garduated 2 years ago.

I agree, I get on here to read about basketball predictions, not which school has better education or which school is breeding a super race of flesh eating basketball superstars (just taking excerts from above, the flesh eating part is just my own sick twist on it ;-) )

As for predictions, i agree with all of your predictions, except i would like to think my leopold could beat charleston for 5th? maybe with a jazzy overtime-half-court-stroke of luck-shot at the buzzer to make leopold win the game? that would be awesome! what do you think?

No way should Notre Dame move in front of Cape.

After last night, I think ND is just fine where they are. I feel thst they, Jackson, and Cape are almost dead even this season.

If you were at the game last night, Sikeston dominated ND but couldnt hit outside shots or finish when they forced turnovers. At this point in the season, Cape, Jackson, and ND all are about the same.

I have not yet watched them play. But I read about their Perryville game and was impressed with their youth because I wrote them off early. That being said. I don't think they are ready to compete with larger schools THIS season (next year prolly). I predicted them to take Oran because i watched them play oran last season when they won. However, If they were to play Charleston as I predicted I'd say they are at a 15 point disadvantage at this point in the season, compared with youth, compared with Charleston, compared with Charlestons strength of schedule. With that being said, those are just my thoughts, and a 15 point disadvantage is well played game for a smaller school. Anything can happen though and I love to see the mighty fall. So best of luck.

In my opinion, no way Leopold stays with Charleston, in fact I would doubt they get the chance due to they will have to get past Oran first. Charleston is just a different type of basketball that Leopold does not see. Perryville plays a slow down game that does not blow out teams, which allows a tema like Leopold to stay in the game. Oran has more talent and should advance to the 5th place game, but who knows there is not that much differnce between 6-11. SCC wins easily, I saw them play and Otto's supporting cast are a lot better than I anticipated. Agree Cape, Jacskon, ND are toss up. Consolation toss up between Oak Ridge, Chaffee, Delta, Meadow Heights.
