Rachel Crader is the editor of semoball.com. She graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in May of 2009 before spending the summer covering the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Highlights from Rachel's days in college include having a class down the hall from Chase Daniel and having NCAA wrestling champion Ben Askren hold the door open for her at Brady Commons, Mizzou's student center. She spent time covering Mizzou basketball, softball and baseball while working for the Columbia Missourian and is excited to return home to Southeast Missouri to cover local sports for semoball.com.

Rachel has covered three Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournaments for the Southeast Missourian and semoball.com, and she'll see you courtside again this year.

How the rankings are determined:

The sports staff at each of the newspapers that contribute to semoball are given a vote -- that includes the Daily American Republic (Poplar Bluff), Daily Dunklin Democrat (Kennett), Dexter Daily Statesman, Sikeston Standard Democrat and Southeast Missourian. Each staff is free to determine how they want to complete its ballot, but there are 12 total people that cover sports for those papers all across the semoball coverage area.

David Jenkins of the Standard Democrat tallies to the votes. A first-place vote is worth ten points, a second-place vote is worth nine points and so on.

Wow again no love for the Bulldogs!! What more do they have to do to gain the love? If anything they should be tied if not ahead of SCC. My question for the 4 newspapers voting on this, what has SCC proved this year that Sikeston hasn't???

Sikeston had 2 blowout wins this past week. One beating Cape, for the second time this year, and destroying a New Madrid team last night to win the SEMO Conference Title outright last night.

Again what does Sikeston have to do???

I guess beat SCC. Which isn't going to happen. To bad, would have been a heck of a game. The schools should have made this happen. Now all there will be is speculation on who would win for years.

Dogs, there are bigger fish to fry for Sikeston than SCC. Let's get geared up for what will hopefully be a long state run. SCC is nothing but another team in Southeast Missouri now. I'll take a state title in a competitive class over being called the #1 team in the semoball coverage area any day.

I don't think there is any lack of respect for Sikeston. Everyone know it is really, really good...but so is Scott County Central. They we on top when voting started and, while Sikeston has been nothing but impressive, SCC hasn't done anything to lose the top spot. It's pretty much that simple, I think.

The team looked pretty good. New Madrid did impress me with stamina. They are no where in the same league as Sikeston in skill but didn't get as tired as most teams. Sikeston just scored at will, like always.

Crader no disrespect at all. Didn't want it to seem that way when I said it earlier. I'm just trying to figure out logic here. In every poll except this one, semoball that is, SCC is behind Sikeston.

For instance,

SCC is 202nd in the nation, 7th in the state, and 1st in class1

Sikeston is 79th in nation, 3rd in the state, and 1st in Class 4

Just because SCC hasn't done anything to lose the top spot then SCC and Sikeston should at least share the top spot. How can you not when theyre 22-0 and beating their opponents on an average of almost 30 points per game? Until these two teams play each other, they should share the top spot.

Here's something to discuss. Four of the top ten teams in the area are in the same district, Charleston, Kennett, Caruthersville, and Twin Rivers. Is Charleston really head and shoulders above the other three like I've been hearing? Does anyone have a shot to come out this district and make a state run? Who are potential sectional and quarter final opponets?

I would say that Charleston is NOT "head and shoulders above the rest" but would rather think that on any given night, any of these teams could knock off the other.

Navin, like every year Charleston is coming together at the right time. Discounting their early in the year loss to Jackson, they have only been defeated by SCC, Sikeston, and a talented out of state team. If there is a sleeper team in the state who could make a huge postseason run, the Blue Jays are it. I believe Willow Springs who are ranked ninth in Class 3 look to be their sectional opponent. I think Charleston can win that. However, I haven't done the research past that point yet, probably my project for the day.

It's not SCC's fault that Sikeston won't play.Maybe you guys should put a little presure on the Sikeston A.D. if you want that NO.1 spot so bad.and come and get it,that's all it takes,just come and get it. I'm sure they could sell out the Show Me Center for this game.. We are comparing apples to oranges here. Let's let SCC be #1 in Class 1 and Sikeston be #1 in Class 4 and hope both teams win out and prove that if these two schools consolidated, you would easily have the best team in the state. Scott county pride.

Whoever wins the Class 3 district 1 should see Willow Springs in the sectional and then Bayless High School in the quarterfinals. Bayless would come out of district 4.

In the Semi final round they would be matchup with a team from the Westside of the state. Could be any of the following: O'Hara, Hamilton, Hogan Prep, Cameron, or a sleeper.

This would be the first year in some time that the District 1 winner wouldn't have to worry about Ritter or Maplewood until the Championship game.

What stinks about that USC is that all of the power teams in Class 3 come from that Kansas City area and just outside it although Charleston or whoever comes out of District 1 could just sneak up on them and pull a shocker.

The thing is Hogan and O'Hara are in the same district so only one will move on. Then Cameron and Hamilton (aka Penney) will met up in the sectional game. The winner will then face either Hogan or O'Hara. Needless to say they are going to beat up with other on their way to the final 4, but it also means that the playoff road from the west side of the state will produce a tough semi final squad.

SCC has Otto Porter and Sikeston does not. Otto has his way with Corey or anyone else that tries to guard him. Sikeston's press would not effect SCC and Otto could look over the defenders to hit open cutters and it would be a layup fest like last year. Other than that SCC and Sikeston have about 7 players each that are equal. I know Sikeston is in shape but so is SCC. SCC won in summer camp with out Trey Johnson. Sikeston's lack of height gives the rebounding edge to SCC. SCC wins 7 out of 10 games if they were to play 10 times. My thoughts anyway.

Sikeston played in the Riverbend the first year they had it in 1994. I think they were invited a couple years back but they opted instead to play in the Pepsi Shootout at the Show Me Center against Lafayette. I don't know if they've been invited back. It wouldn't make much sense to join it these days anyway with the way their football team has been going. They'd be pretty much be trotting out a JV team to play in it. Or at least a varsity team that hasn't had any practices.

Simeon beat SCC 26 but it was less than 20 with a min to go. Stuart Johnson was very very sick and was pulled in the 1st qtr after he had several uncommon turn overs that led to SCC being down 16 points in the 1st qrt. So to play the #4 team in the nation with out your pointguard and not loose by 40 like the #1 ranked team in Indy did then that counts for something.

And i hope Sikeston does play those bigger schools.. no SCC fans will want this game next year, and probably not the years after.. Your having a good year but it proves that beating sikeston would be a bigger accomplishment then winning state to y'all..

That team that you are referring to as the "#1 ranked team in Indiana" is Lew Wallace who is 6-10 according to maxpreps, was only able to beat Soldan by three and was defeated by McCluer North. Maxpreps has them not as #1 or #10 but #64 in the state of Indiana. Might want to consult your facts again. That sounds like a team that is supposed to lose by 40 to Simeon.

FIRST game of the season should have won, NLR made everything they threw up,behind at half, made ajustments at half came out and won the ball game... N.L.R. 7A runner-up in ARK. 2010.. Got everybody back,looked pretty good in the game I saw,shot the extremly well.I would have to think N.L.R. dosn't play a bunch creampuffs!!!!!!

I am sorry I forgot that you guys are SIKESTON and just better than us window lickers in the rest of SEMO. I did base Lew Wallace off of what was said on ESPN and have not looked them up. SCC got beat in the first game of the year by North Little Rock a game they dominated in the 1st half so much so that allot of people left thinking SCC had it won then SCC played it's worst half all year. NLR got hot and beat them in a game SCC wins by 20 if played today. How come Sikeston fans do not take into account that SCC beat them this summer and just drop it? SCC has the better team this year and next year SCC will be #12th ish in SEMO. It comes down to this SCC... Otto Porter! Sikeston... Michael is at SEMO. SCC wins again by 20.

Sikeston was a .500 ball team and had a coach that was just about to get fired. Then Melvin Porter gets done wrong at SCC and moves to town. Suddenly they have 3 players that would have been SCC's starters and go to the final 4 suddenly basketball is cool at Sikeston. So it just tears Sikeston up that SCC is #1 even knowing that they owe it all to SCC! Where am I wrong?

What right do you have to make accusations about why anyone moved? Mrs. Porter works in sikeston.. And basketball being "Cool" Has nothing to do with the like 80-5 record from 7-12.. Were going through are good Cycle.. And scc is on the last leg of its dominating profromances..

SCC's players do not play a fall sport.. Because SCC doesn't offer them.. So Summer ball doesn't mean squat.. Yes you beat us by a point, but 4 of our starting five were also getting ready to lead us to a 14-1 football season.. Sikeston beat White haven, the reiging 6a runner ups.. but is that why we think we should be number one? No.. They also had two 6 10' guys..

I understand that you think your the best, and by no means am i complaining about the poll.. because it doesn't mean anything.. But to act like SCC is head and shoulders above sikeston is rididculous..

And i'm pretty sure bobby went to sikeston untill where he lived was an issue..

SCC hase been head and shoulders above Sikeston in basketball for 35 years..now all of a sudden you got a few of our players moved in and your the greatest team ever. We've had a lot of great teams over the years,and we do have a couple of state titles.so we probally don't get as excited as you guys about it ,so good luck and lets try and play next year..

Seriously, how do we know that they have been head and shoulders above? They have played twice in that time span. Sure, SCC has rolled to some state titles in class 1, and I know that they could have won state in higher classes, but to say that over that time span they have been that much better than Sikeston is unproven and once again a useless argument. They are a great team and have a great history, but to compare the 2 over 35 years from playing twice is crazy.

I always find it funny when SCC fans claim the Melvin Porter boys as their own when they only went to school there for three years. And SCC fans are complaining about move-ins? Puh-leeze. Bobby Hatchett? D.D. Gillespie? Randy Timmons? I can go on and on but don't have the time nor want to, but you get the point. Heck, didn't Otto Junior go to Cape Central schools before SCC? Yes, the Porters COULD have stayed at SCC but your school chose a different path. Don't blame Sikeston if you are regretting that decision. It is a great family of talented athletes and more importantly outstanding people, and we have welcomed them to Sikeston into our family.

I've got no issues with SCC and I have always been a fan and will continue to be one, but I don't like it when fans come on here throwing crap in our face when we've done nothing but do things the right way.

No coach was about to be fired. You are misinformed. Something tells me you are misinformed on many issues though.

How did the Porters end up in Sikeston anyway? Was it the fact that maybe their PARENTS wanted them to attend where the MOTHER has been teaching for years??? Why must SCC fans bring up past occurrences, such as past state titles, move in or outs? the present is both schools are very good, just because they arent playing doesnt mean squat. It is what it is. Numerous Sikeston fans have praised SCC, but Old Cat continues to cheap shot and make immature remarks. If Sikeston posters would just ignore him/her, maybe, maybe he/she would figure it out.....maybe not. Anyway, good luck to SCC on their path to a state title, and good luck to the Bulldogs on their quest of a state title as well. Remember, when you get up north, it would be great to have a huge SEMO following.

Hold up no one is on her bashing the Porters or saying anything about move-ins. My point is what was Sikeston's season records for 4 years prior to the Porters showing up? What was coach Holifield's record prior to Michael? Yes the move was 100% legit and with out question the only choice Melvin had after he was done wrong by SCC. My point is Basketball was not the "cool" sport in Sikeston untill the Porters showed up. Sikeston started pressing and bam they start winning. Out of the 16 State Banners at SCC 15 of them has a Porter family member's name on it. Sikeston has 2 and I think 50% of them has a Porter's name on it. Right? SCC has Otto the best Porter of all time so SCC would win if they played. Case closed let it go!

My other point is Sikeston's fans spend alot of time on message boards and oldcat and others not from Sikeston just do it for fun to see how many post Sikeston fans can put up in an hour. Because it does not matter if someone said Findlay Prep is better than Sikeston the same old woreout screen names will post 100 times how that poster is wrong and a window licker. Aint that right gadet, MandM, Bleacherbum, ect? 15 Sikeston fans on one SCC fan and we are the ones beating our chest? Looks like I proved my second point! Good luck to all SEMO Teams.

I think the point of the history of SCC championships is not that past performance is a predictor of future performance, but that there has been an established program for the kids at an earlier age and the district has been fortunate enough to have had great coaching for several years. I would like to have seen a game this year between SCC and SHS. I attended both schools and was fortunate to have done so on both counts.

North Little Rock is the #4th ranked team in AR 7A they have lost 7 games 3 of which were to Hall #3 in the state of AR and 2 to Conway #3 in 7A. According to Massey. Guess they should have played St Gen or Park Hills that might have helped their state rankings.

I disagree nohands. Basketball was plenty "cool" as you put it here in Sikeston. No, the wins were a little harder to come by there for a while, but they were still getting packed houses at home games. Basketball became cool when Fred Johnson took over the program 20 years ago and it's been cool ever since.

Okay, what was SCC's record before Cookson showed up? Was basketball cool before he got there? Maybe the Porter family moved there in the '60s? What if they moved and settled somewhere else? People move around. It happens. Every school around here has had some kid move in that has helped their program. Tyler Hansbrough was born in Columbia. I guess you could say he "moved" to Poplar Bluff.

I really don't understand your point. What difference does it make how it happened? All that matters is that it happened. Are you upset that Sikeston is stealing some of SCC's thunder or are you just upset at some of the things a few people post on message boards? Do you let message boards sway your opinion of a school and a team? If that is the case then I invite you to go watch Sikeston play basketball. Meet the coaches and the players. You'll find that they aren't evil people. Just great, hard working kids trying to do the best that they can. We aren't trotting out 6'8" and 6'9" All-Americans. Our tallest player is 6'2". We're trotting out the hand we're dealt and they've worked their butts off to be the champions they are today. There hasn't been any cheating or wrongdoing to get Sikeston's program to where it is. Just a lot of hard work and dedication. How can you not appreciate that? You must be very young because real fans of high school basketball could appreciate the time and effort that has gone into Sikeston being as good as they are. I understand if you're young and you view Sikeston as a rival and it bothers you that SCC MIGHT not be as good as them. Relax, I said MIGHT. If that is the case, I understand because I know how teenagers think. As you get older and mature you will understand how and why things are done and that it doesn't matter if Sikeston is better than SCC or SCC is better than Sikeston or if Cooter is better than all of them. All that matters is that they all have hard-working kids just trying to do the best that they can.

Since 1991, Sikeston has won district titles in 91, 94, 95, 99, 2000, 2006, 2009, and 2010. Here's the finishes for those seasons:

Fred Johnson:

91 - lost in quarters (Parkway West - they went on to win state)

94 - lost in quarters (Vashon - they won state)

95 - fourth in state (lost to Vashon again)

Gregg Holifield:

99 - lost in sectionals (Kirkwood)

00 - lost in sectionals (Lindbergh)

06 - 2nd in state (Mike's freshman year - lost to Borgia)

09 - lost in quarters (Mike's senior year - lost to Borgia - they won state)

10 - lost in quarters (Borgia - 2nd in state)

You are missing the point.

SIKESTON HAS NEVER STOLE A SINGLE PLAYER FROM SCC.

My point is Sikeston was a sub .500 basketball school in the 70's and 80's in the 90's Fred Johnson came to town with a pressing style and made basketball cool @ Sikeston. He had a good program going then politics got in his way because some parents with money wanted their kids to play because it was the cool thing to do.

Where did he coach prior to Sikeston? SCC

Sikeston fell back in the cellar till the Porters left SCC and moved to Sikeston. For good reason and it was 100% legit legal the right thing for Melvin's family ect ect everyone @ SCC feels this way you will not find one person who will say the move was BS! not one single person. When the Porters moved Sikeston goes back to the final four and it's cool again.

I am not taking anything away from Sikeston players or coaches. I was just saying when a sport at a school becomes "cool" the kids work harder at it and become better. Sikeston has always had talent but often times kids that were good basketball players didn't play and walked the halls because it was not "cool" to play. I would say there are not many good ball players walking the halls and not playing @ Sikeston these days

The other point I am making is a lot of Sikeston fans get on here and have the "we are better than you" towards everyone. They hijack every thread and turn it into a Sikeston VS World thread. Not all but alot of Sikeston Posters show no respect towards SCC and it's a joke to the rest of SEMO how they dis everyone. SCC can play top ranked teams in the Nation and have a 6'9 all american and not even have a close game by a SEMO team beat Sikeston by 20 last year beat them in the summer but Sikeston fans just cannot accept that most people in SEMO think SCC is the better team and they complain non-stop about being #2. Where am I wrong?

Winning a district title is certainly no easy task in the large school divisions and Sikeston has won 20 of them. Winning a state title is close to impossible unless you have something special.

Yah-yah that is alot of seasons that end in "Lost" against schools the same size as you. With the talent Sikeston has they should have a "Won" in there some where. Other local schools with the same talent "pool" NMCC,SCC, Charleston, Malden, PB, BC, Cape, ND, all have a "Won". I hope Sikeston get theirs this year so maybe you guys will know what it is like to have a "Won" by your name.

Sure there were SOME seasons of sub .500, but as a whole no. The only coach with a losing record was Foster in the late 80s. You seem to overlook the fact that Sikeston had 16 district titles before the Porter family ever moved here. You do realize that's among the most playoff appearances ever in the area and the state? Yet somehow, someway we did all this without basketball being "cool." You keep trying to convince people that the only reason Sikeston is any good is because of the Porter family moving here. That is a disservice to the kids and to the coaches. The Porters are a piece of the puzzle just like anybody else.

You are also wrong in that talent was walking the halls and not playing because it wasn't cool. There was no talent walking those halls. And the ones that were there, were removed from the team or couldn't stay out of trouble. It's called teaching. It's called running a program the right way. You don't win at all costs because a kid is talented. You get rid of bad apples. That is what has happened a few times at Sikeston, but people only want to point to wins and losses, not the lessons being taught.

At least we got our "cool" factor bumped up from '06 to '91. Whew! Hopefully we can stay cool.

So by that count there are 14 sub .500 seasons in a 40-year stretch. Sikeston also won district titles in '69, 71, 73, 75 which aren't listed there. I'm shocked we could do that without basketball being cool. That is even more impressive if you ask me.

That's pretty impressive! Well, for 1A. I didn't realize SCC had a basketball team prior to this year.

LOL, just kidding, but you do need to work on your basic counting skills.

What are you arguing here? We all know that SCC has the all-time top program in terms of state titles in Missouri. Nobody is discounting what SCC has done. That would just be ignorant. This whole point about Sikeston not having players because it wasn't "cool" or whatever makes no sense though. I don't know what you are trying to get at. At most schools, these sports go in cycles unless you are a factory like Charleston or SCC. Cape, ND, New Madrid, Bell City, etc. had a few good seasons and things lined up for a state title. Everything hasn't lined up right for Sikeston to finish a run yet. Class 4 is tough considering the high level of talent that is consistently there. But this year looks like the year they could pull it off, potentially undefeated no less. Going undefeated into the postseason isn't easy, getting out of the postseason undefeated is even tougher. SCC has only been able to do it twice. Thus, that is why SCC is #1 right now even though they don't have a quality win any higher than Sikeston does. But if Sikeston goes undefeated, they would deserve the top spot, whether they played SCC or not. The stubborn SCC fans who think they would win no matter what don't know what they are talking about, The stubborn Sikeston fans who think they would win no matter what don't know what they are talking about. Both teams are phenomenal and a game between the two would be electric, just as good as the Michael vs. Otto game. Anybody who says differently is blinded by cockiness. Scott County has the two best teams in Southeast Missouri and probably two of the top five in the state. Let's hope they both bring home titles along with Charleston, Portageville, Bernie, Cape or whoever so that we can prove that the best basketball comes from down here.

I personally said i didn't have a problem with the rankings.. And rocket kept asking why we couldnt even recieve one vote.. Its not a definite that sikeston would win, as its not clear cut that SCC would win..

And past history means nothing in these rankings.. Because if it did SCC would be 1st in the state.. So the 1963 district championship doesn't matter..

Everyone wants to see these two teams play because 1. They both have a great shot at winning a state championship.. 2. They are both head and Shoulders above every team in the semo area except each other.. 3. these kids have grown up hoopin with each other..

Why we dont play? It has nothing to do with the players or coaches.. And i promise you they aren't ducking anyone.. the players wanted it just as bad as we do, but they aren't devasted when they realized it wouldn't happen.. because it's just for bragging rights, they WANT that state championship.. And i hope both teams get it..

My question was simply how sikeston couldn't get one vote? I understand why.. but they have about the same win average over common oppenents, and i'm just curious over the "strength" of the schedules.. Like win-loss comparison..

But at the end of the day, both are the 2 best teams in this part of the state, and their own class.. Its not going to come down to a district title, or a state title.. Its just for bragging rights..

Bobby Hatchett's grandpa once made the remark that "Sikeston has hundreds of little "Bobby's" walking the streets and no one will open up their gym to them". That was several years ago.....before the YMCA. Now that we have the YMCA, I believe that Sikeston will stay loaded with talent. And it's not just the players, but the cheerleaders, the bums, the fans,.... they all play a part in making the game so darn enjoyable. I even enjoy listening to the old folks in the stand running their mouths!

One more thing, I'll bet that Corey is glad to be in Sikeston where he had the opportunity to play football (and take college prep classes!)

Borrowing a phrase from James Bond, "but, of course they do." I was responding to the phrase that Corey is able to take college prep classes at Sikeston; sounds as though had he been at SCC, he would not have been afforded that opportunity. But, SCC students take college classes at SAHEC just as Sikeston students do...as do Oran, Chaffee, Kelly and Charleston

Wow, when you look at Sikestons record over the years it is clear that this is the BEST team they have EVER had. What is more amazing is this 4A team still has to make the arguement that they are better than the little 1A team just north of them. Best of luck to both, I hope both win state.

Actually look at the points, charleston and cape are now tied with 30. Cape is probably listed first because of alphabetical order or because they have been in the spot longer.

SE Missouri has the opportunity to send four teams to Columbia in four classes----SCC, Charleston, Cape Central, and Sikeston. Does anyone know how many state titles each of those teams have won? I know Charleston has 10....what about SCC, CC, and Sikeston?

You are correct, SEMO has a great chance of sending 4 teams to Columbia. But I have to disagree with one of your teams. No disrespect to Cape but they will win districts and get blown out in first round after that.

We will send Bernie, IMO, instead of Cape. Also, Charleston is clicking on all cylinders right now!! IMO, not only can we send 4 teams but 4 teams with a legit shot of bringing it home.

I think we have a shot at beating the winniner of district 2 if that winner happens to be mccluer north. You know the odds are stacked against you when you're hoping that you play the #2 team in class 5.

There are only five classes fanatic. But I do see SCC winning, Sikeston having a great shot, the winner of Class 3 District 1 to have a possibility no matter who it is, and either Bernie or Portageville having a very good shot. No offense to Cape but they will have to get by the top two teams in Class 5 in the state just to get to the Final Four. Beating Hazelwood Central would be near impossible and Chaminade is even better. If McCluer North upsets Hazelwood at districts, Cape would have a shot at beating them since they rely almost solely on two players offensively.

Drove over for the jackson game today against Kennett, and was really surprised and impressed with the quickness of Kennett. I'd heard about them, but didn't think they could overcome the height of Jackson on their home court. I still think they'll have a tough time getting out of their district, but one never knows. I think sikeston & kennett will both have to overcome height disadvantages sooner or later after district.

semo....the Bulldogs have played against multiple 6'5, 6'6, 6'7 6'8 6'10.....some of those have had 6'4's and 6'5s with them...they just dont get any bigger in our class.

I'm with you on that semotexex. I want all SEMO teams to win state titles. I just don't understand the animosity and/or jealousy some people have. I agree people on message boards can be overbearing but I certainly don't let it sway my opinion of a team, their players, and coaches.

For example, since we just played Bernie, I'll use them. What if Bernie's fans were the most obnoxious posters in the world (which they are not, in fact they are very respectful and complimentary of their opponents from what I've seen). But lets say they have obnoxious, cocky posters. It wouldn't matter to me what people say on here, because the product I watch on the court is all that matters. That is ALL THAT MATTERS. The product on the court. Who cares what fans say?
