High School Volleyball Season is Comin' and we're EXCITED!!Posted Monday, August 17, 2009, at 2:35 PM
Most schools here in Bollinger County opened their doors this past week for another round of Readn' Rightn' and Rithmatic for the "kid krowd". This occasion does not bring much enthusiasm from the children believe me! I think I'm the only one who's excited about school starting. For, when August rolls around and school starts, that means one thing to us, the start of the Leopold Wildcats ball season.
Word on the street was, the girls volleyball practice started a day or two before school actually commenced. Once again, I'm excited and a little nervous too. Our senior class of 2009 had some very talented, athletic girls, who were a strong presence on the court last year. Danielle Beel, Casey Bucher, April Nenninger, Seirra Seiler, Chelsey Stoverink and Jessica Bueter all had good playing time last year and will be missed. If my records are correct, Leopold ended last season with a 24-4-1 record and some of this years returning players had a lot to do with the building that of record. Kristen Thele was tough at the net and Lauren Seiler was a strong setter in last years season. Mackenzie Beel also seen some varsity time last year as did Abby Landewee. One thing I have learned from my many seasons watching high school sports is that no two seasons are ever alike. The only thing that stays the same is our excitement about the season finally being here!! Leopold has a Gatorade game Aug. 27th, guess we will get a pre-view of the season in store then. Win, loose or draw, we'll be in the stands cheering for the Wildcats. Leopold should kick off their 2009 season at the Woodland Volleyball Tournament, which according to the Banner Press Newspaper, starts Aug. 31st. I'm sure the Zalma Bulldogs will be there too. Marcia, and her husband Tony, are avid Leopold Wildcat fans. Win, lose or draw, volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, they're in the stands, cheering for the mighty Blue and White.
Living in southern Bollinger County, they also enjoy watching the Zalma Bulldogs. The only thing that takes them away from local school sports is farming. That, thank heavens, usually starts about the time the school year is ending in the spring, so there is little conflict. They live in the Glennon community, with their dog Jay Jay, and their cat Miss Addie Lee. Hot topics One Last Volleyball Blog(7 ~ 2:11 PM, Dec 17)

Editor? Paging an editor to this blog. Thank you!
Whistleone,
You will find that there will be new community bloggers added to the site regularly from this point forward. If you choose do to so, you can visit each new post to pick out any typos and misspellings. (I'm disappointed that you missed me writing Marty Mishow's name as Mary last week.)
However, I think you'll find that you'll be missing out on a lot of good information and great stories from people who love high school sports. I do not and will not edit the blog posts of community members before they are posted on the site -- it would not being in keeping with the spirit of semoball, which is that anyone who has something to say about sports in Southeast Missouri can say it here without fear of unnecessary ridicule or internet flaming.
I think Marcia's message in the post comes through quite clear, and I enjoyed reading it. It is unfortunate that you choose to keep coming back to focus on the negative with your comments.
Good luck LHS! I hope you all kick *** and take names in 2009!
From the husband of a LHS alum.
Rachel, when you establish a site that is free of "unnecessary ridicule or internet flaming," let me know. It sure as heck is not going to be Semoball. Good luck.
Rachel-
Seeing as your title is "semoball.com editor" it would seem to me that you need to start doing your job.
Don't get me wrong. I think having community bloggers is a wonderful idea, and I read Marcia's blog. However, it was impossible for me to focus on what she was saying because of the errors. I am no english writer and I do make plenty of mistakes myself when it comes to my writings, but that is why my comments are not made into a blog and publicized on this website's front page. To have a blog on here (a newspaper's site of all places) and to have an incredible amount of mistakes (words that are not spelled correctly, tenses that are mixed up, and 762 comma splices) is an embarassement to the Missourian, to you as an editor, and to Marcia. For the readers sake, for your sake, and for Marcia's sake, please do your job as "editor" and stop trying to protect the blogger's feelings by not touching their work and correct it where it needs correction.
"...it would not being in keeping with the spirit of semoball, which is that anyone who has something to say about sports in Southeast Missouri can say it here without fear of unnecessary ridicule or internet flaming."...I have read semoball for some time now, and the majority of the comments on semoball are usually negative, not everyone has something nice to say. And whistleone's comments were not "unnecessary ridicule" or "internet flaming." In fact, they were very necessary and I think the unnecessary thing here is that you, the editor, refuses to fix mistakes. Please resign your post and let someone who isn't going to protect feelings do a much needed job. This site is becoming an embarrassment.
Who the hell cares? Let people "right" what they want and if they don't want to read it then they can go be damned!!!!
When semoball announced the resurrection of community blogs, I hoped they would be an improvement over the last go 'round. I doubt the topic of Leopold Wildcat volleyball will spark the debate that Scott City football brought about last time, but I at least (begrudgingly) expected poor writing and grammar from a high school student back then.
I wholeheartedly respect the freedom of expression that is embodied in a community blog. With that being said, I expect a blog sponsored by a newspaper to be edited for grammar and spelling. Simply correcting grammar, punctuation and spelling takes nothing away from the message of a blog. While Marcia's message may have been clear to Rachel, I could not get past the errors.
Since my first comment was deleted ("please hire a proofreader"), I chose to take another angle and request an editor for Marcia's blog. I'm guessing the role of editor has taken on a new meaning in the age of digital media since Rachel chooses not to edit the content of community blogs. Personally, if I were an editor, I would not want my name to be associated with writing that some may consider to be substandard. If my comments were considered to be "unnecessary ridicule or internet flaming", the readers and those who comment over at Speak Out must be working overtime to be sure Rachel does not start editing that section.
If it is the "spirit of semoball" to post blogs filled with poor grammar, spelling errors and misused punctuation, I'll choose to get my local sports information from semosportsweb.com.
The world is full of morons.
I chose to write my blog in the spirit of Mark Twain, with a country twang. I'm not a grammer expert, just a blogger about local sports. My spelling was intentional. My writing style was by choice, not ignorance.
I made some grammar errors, I realize that. I did not mean to embarass anyone.
Wow! I am so thankful that there are people here to point out what and where someone had grammatical errors, spelling errors, etc.
As for the confusion I can understand why a person would not be able to fully comprehend what Marcia was getting at. In fact I will address the issue now...Marcia, next time you write a blog post please include pictures because obviously you used too big of words for some readers to wrap their little minds around.
I love it, one person who critiqued the blog clearly stated he/she would never write a post to be published for the public. This reminds of how throughout the southeast missouri region there are smarter coaches sitting in the bleachers at every game, funny enough, ironic enough, these people are fans, parents, and yes, even bloggers.
It's always easier to point out someone else's shortcomings than what it is our own. For those who want to critique before putting your fingers to your keyboard, look in the mirror and just walk away from the computer.
I look forward to the future blog post of WhistleNone, Sunlit & BitterAngels!
"...but that is why my comments are not made into a blog and publicized on this website's front page..."
Mr. Newson -
I hardly think I clearly stated that I would never write a post to be published for the public. I "clearly stated" I do not have a blog and it is not publicized on this website's front page because I do make mistakes.
Why is it such a HUGE deal that I want to read a blog that is not filled with errors. I did not take a stab at Marcia or the content of her blog, I simply think it's very unprofessional to have an unedited blog on this website. As I said earlier, I love the idea of community bloggers and although I have no interest in Leopold volleyball, some people do and that is perfectly fine. I just strongly believe this site needs to edit blogs regardless if the blogger is trying to mimic Mark Twain or not.
Sorry if there was a misunderstanding.
I thought blogs were for entertainment and inforamation puposes. I just read them and go on. I never realized people get hung up on the grammar. I can't spell, and I talk "country". I love local high school sports. I thought that's what the blogs were suppose to be about, sports not grammar.
farminmarsh,
The issue is not your spelling or grammatical errors. The issue is that semoball's "editor" is not editing. Semoball has provided you with a tremendous opportunity to give us insight into local high school sports that may otherwise go uncovered. In contrast, semoball is doing you a disservice by not editing your blog or even running a simple spell check. The lack of proofreading by the semoball staff damages the credibility of the site and is driving away readers.
On a side note, I have found the spell check feature in Mozilla's Firefox web browser to be very helpful.
Tyler, you had some grammatical errors in your post.
Where is an editor when you need one?

What about the volleyball????? It's the sports, stupid.
HaHa. whistleone, who are you? An English prof from SEMO? It appears that you must crave personal attention. In the future, I would suggest that others not respond to your holier-than-thou, elitist attitude styled critiques.
The innitial blog could be followed by anyone, and the message was loud and clear. I for one enjoyed reading it, and would hope that other bloggers will not be deterred by people like you.
Keep the blogs coming...I enjoy reading about all area athletic programs. And, I for one appreciate the fact that the original messages are not edited.
Ladybug21,
I am not an English professor at SEMO. I do not "crave personal attention". If I did crave personal attention, I surely wouldn't have a nondescript user name that gives no indication of who I really am. I am a frequent reader of semoball.com and semissourian.com who has become frequently frustrated by the lack of proofreading and attention to detail on these sites. All too often, writers and editors are making excuses for poor grammar, spelling and editing by chalking it up to being on a blog or only online.
If you read my comments, most of them were directed toward the editors of this site and I did not comment on the subject matter of the blog. In fact, I praised semoball.com for providing Marcia with the opportunity to write about a subject that might otherwise go uncovered. My expectations for Marcia's writing are less that what they would be if she were a full time journalist. Moreover, my expectations for an editor of a website connected with a newspaper are such that all writing pieces, whether an article or a blog, be free from spelling and simple grammatical errors.
One last note... My "holier-than-thou, elitist attitude" tells me that you misspelled initial.
Guess I must have struck a nerve.
I'm with whistleone and sunlight. What exactly does an editor do if she doesn't edit?
I love this country!
I know Marcia and Tony myself and if any of you knew her you would leave her alone. I would say there is not one ballgame of any sport in Leopold that they miss, they truely love kids and the school and would do anything to help anyone. They are two of the best people around and so what if she spelled something wrong, so what if there was a comma in the wrong spot. Another thing who cares if the editor is not checking the blog- it is just a blog read it and go on. If you dont like it stay away.
I like what she is doing and if you dont like the way she is writing then move on and keep your mouth shut. Leave her alone she is doing just fine.
I also know Marcia and Tony, they are very nice people, just leave her alone and let her do what she enjoys doing. Her and Tony are at all the sports events, and very supportive of the schools.
I get tired of the hillbilly bias and the mentioning of the same teams over and over, like something BIG is always about to happen. Are any of your mentionables brave enough to face the toughness of 4A competition at ASU this weekend for fresh blood? I think not. I wouldn't miss that level of play. Umm, Umm, Good!!
freefaller, I haven't read any volleyball blogs from you yet..I'd love to read them. I wish more people would take the time to blog about their teams. Your free to sign up and be a blogger. If you are tired of the hillbilly bias, move on to the next blog please.
