Woodland Tourament Action Final

Posted Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 12:30 AM

Day 1Sept. 1

Game One

Leopold over Greenville
25/825/13

First seeded Leopold came out looking sharp, and stayed that way. Highlights of the 2 matches were Elizabeth Eftinks "strong-arm" serves, 14 in the first set, and I believe 9 in the second set. She didn't loose momentum and that's alot of serves. Greenville had trouble getting under them. Add some well placed kills by Kristen Thele and Abby Landewee and it was game, set and match.

Game 2

Woodland over Saxony Lutheran

25/1425/19

Second seeded Woodland had some quick moves Tuesday night, Becky Brannon especially. In the second set the competition evened up, that set was more tit-for-tat, lots of back and forth action, with Woodland pulling away with a win in the end.

Game 3

Advance over Oak Ridge

25/625/13

Third seeded Advance took off strong on a serving run by Sara Mace and never looked back.

Game 4

Zalma over Meadow Heights in 3 sets

14/2525/1125/17

Fifth seeded Zalma upset 4th seeded Meadow Heights. Meadow Heights had very little trouble with Zalma the first set. It was a different ballgame in the second set. Zalma found motivation and took off strong. The lady Bulldogs had Meadow Heights down 11 to 1 in no time. A couple more plays and Zalma was leading 16 to 2. Meadow Heights made a run, but couldn't catch up. The third set between Zalma and Meadow Heights was the best of all. Lots of back and forth action, determination kicked in on both teams, but when all was said and done, Zalma had the victory and an up-set.

Day 2 Sept. 3

Consolation Bracket

Game One

Meadow Heights over Greenville

25/2025/13

Greenville hung tough the first set, answering Meadow Heights serves with a solid back row. I thought Greenville had a standout player in Tara Porter, #9 tonight. Greenville also got some smart plays in on Meadow Heights, placing the ball in Meadow Heights open spots. Meadow Heights pulled ahead in both sets for the victory and a chance to take consolation tomorrow night.

Game Two

Saxony Lutheran over Oak Ridge

25/1225/6

I was glad to see Lauren Meyer take the court with Oak Ridge tonight. I noticed she was not playing Tuesday night, someone mentioned a shoulder problem. I would also like to comment on #25 for Oak Ridge. (sorry I don't know which player she is, the numbers were not listed in the program) She dose a good job of keeping the ball in play. Saxony Lutheran will play Meadow Heights for the consolation Friday night.

Winners Bracket

Game Three

Leopold over Zalma

25/1825/15

What can I say, my two favorite teams were playing each other. The one thing I will comment on is Leopold's sprit leaders, they were LOUD and PROUD tonight.

Game Four

Advance over Woodland

26/2425/15

Woodland, like Zalma, is a scrappy team. The first set was great. Woodland was down, and fought back to tie the game 11-11. As you can see by the score, that set came down to the wire. I thought Becky Brannon did another great job tonight. She's quick and can what we call "off-set" the ball well, which means she can get under the ball from just about any angle.

One thing's for sure, tomorrow nights tournment action will be HOT, on the court and in the stands.

Day Day Three Start time 6:00 pm

Consolation Bracket

Meadow Heights over Saxony Lutheran in 3 sets

25/1522/2525/22

In the first set, Meadow Heights came from behind (by at least 5 points) to take the lead and cruise to a win by ten points. In the second set, Saxony Lutheran took off strong and had the Panthers down 14 to 5, I believe, at one point. Jillian Mills of Meadow Heights had some key plays which helped the Panthers fight back and bring their score to within 3 points of Crusaders. Heated action continued, but Meadow Height couldn't catch up. Meadow Heights won a hard fought battle in the tie breaking set to capture the consolation plaque tonight.

Third Place

Zalma over Woodland in 3 sets

19/2525/1725/22

Zalma pulled off another up-set tonight, beating the Cardinals in three sets for third place. This match up was the best action of the night. To tell the truth, I got so wrapped up in the game, I didn't jot down many notes. Zalma lost the first set. Once again, Becky Brannon with Woodland had smooth moves tonight placing the ball smartly in open court on the Zalma side. In the second set Zalma found their groove and used it to tie things up with a set a piece. Once Zalma got the lead in the third set, they kept it and didn't look back.

First Place

Leopold over Advance

25/1625/12

Leopold had little trouble with Advance in the championship game. In the first set, Mallory James stepped up to the action and played the best I've ever seen her play. Lauren Seiler did a good job of digging the ball out of the net, which kept the ball in play. (I still can't believe she got under the ball. Digging the ball out of the net is a hard thing to accomplish.) Advance had some trouble getting in the net, which gave Leopold some easy points and fuel for their fire. In my opinion, Leopold overwhelmed Advance in the second set. Abby Landewee, Kristen Thele and Mackenzie Beel, were on their game and the set didn't take long. I would like to mention Sara Mace with Advance again. Her serves are tough to handle. She's a fine sitter and a very versatile player.

The Sportsmanship award went to Greenville.

The Tournament Team consist of

Advance---Liza Grey and Sara Mace

Meadow Heights---Jillian Mills

Saxony Lutheran---Holly Scherman

Woodland---Becky Brannon

Zalma---Lesta Newberry

Leopold---Mackenzie Beel, Abby Landewee, Lauren Seiler and Kristen Thele.

All the games were pretty good tonight! Oak Ridge and Saxony Lutheran surprised me; I thought they would have been much better, especially tonight for Oak Ridge since Lauren played, and I heard the same thing about her shoulder as the reason why she didn't play the night before, but she didn't have a very good night tonight, either. I don't know her name but I think the tall blonde girl (#17) from Oak Ridge had the best performance at the tournament (from Oak Ridge); I wouldn't be surprised if she receives All-Tournament team. I didn't get to see the Greenville-Meadow Heights game, but we play Greenville later this season so I'll get to see them play, then.

I won't comment much on the Leopold-Zalma game. All I will say is that we didn't play up to our full potential, and I blame most of it on our team's mentality tonight (they were scared and pretty intimidated, which they always are when they play Leopold and/or Bell City) but it was a really good game and I was surprised at how close the score was. Leopold's defense isn't as good as it normally is but they make up for it with their powerful hitters and strength at the net.

The Advance-Woodland game was also a really good match (well, at least the first set). Advance is pretty scrappy as well and inconsistent, but I think their strength is in their serves: Sara Mace and Liza Gray, especially. If they play up to their full potential, I could see them giving Leopold a run for their money, but right now I still give the edge to Leopold. We'll see what happens!

Zalma played tough tonight. I was so proud of them. Zalma is a young team and they already have a solid platform in place to build off of. I think if they grow as a team, they will learn to throw being scared and intimedated out the window. For a young team to come into a varsity tournament seeded fifth, and be playing for third is a major accomplishment, in my opinion. As I mentioned before, they are a scrappy bunch, go get 'em Bulldogs!!

Marcia, where are you? I've been waiting to read your updated blog ever since I got home a couple hours ago! I'll go ahead and leave my comments, though, in anxious anticipation for your new blog!

The Meadow Heights-Saxony Lutheran consolation game, I thought, was never going to end! It kept going back and forth with missed serves and all three games were really close but I was glad to see Meadow Heights, a fellow school from Bollinger County, eek out a victory.

As for the Woodland-Zalma game, I was very impressed with our girls' performance tonight. I don't know what happened with us that first set that we lost 19-25, but it seemed to be a repeat of the Meadow Heights game in which we lost the first set but recovered in the second set, which we won 25-17. We found our motivation and momentum in the second set and we kept it going in the third set during which we held a slight lead throughout the entire set. Woodland picked up the pace a little bit but we quickly responded with some good hits by Angela Dickinson (#5) before finishing it out 25-22. It was a grand victory both for the girls and our coach, Cindy Wiseman, whose sister Mary Kay Stoneking is the coach at Woodland. You can bet your bottom dollar that Woodland will be out for blood when we play them in regular season (which we play them on our home court, though, so we'll have an advantage)!

The Leopold-Advance game surprised me; it was a totally different Advance team that played tonight. I think their problem was what our girls' problem is when we play Leopold: mentality. You could tell just by looking at Advance that they were so nervous and shocked when they were playing Leopold. Leopold also seemed to want it more than Advance did, which was evident in both their team's performance and the cheering section in the stands tonight: the orange and black chants were all but drowned out by the Leopold Spirit Leaders (I think is what they are called) who pepped up the crowd. Advance just wasn't with it tonight. They had so many missed serves and hits in the net but the few times they actually stepped it up and hit at Leopold, they made a good run at it. Leopold is always good at volleyball, don't get me wrong, but their defense seems to be their weak spot this season. Basically, if you can get a strong hit or kill and break the tall Leopold blockers, that's how you can beat them because that seems to get them down a lot. You can't get a good hit without good defense. Can't remember the scores to the other games but I'm sure Marcia will post them as soon as she starts her blog.

Congratulations to all Bollinger County teams tonight for their stellar performances and a special congratulations to the Zalma Lady Bulldogs for their victorious upset of the Woodland Lady Cardinals tonight! For a team that was seeded 5th to upset two teams in a tournament, I think, is something to be really proud of, and knocking off a team that was seeded second and is the host of the tournament and whose coach is an alma mater of your school and is your coach's sister is all just the icing on top of the cake. Oh and also congratulations to all the wonderful athletes who made the Woodland All-Tournament Team (special congrats to Zalma's Lesta Newberry who made it!)

semocrat08, sorry it took me so long to get the tourn. action posted I'm slow...I have to type, type and re-type to get what I want to say, the way I want to say it. I'm not as gifted with words as you are. Your responces to my post have been so good, I sure wish you would start a blog about volleyball...I'd be your first fan..

I enjoy your blogs as well, Marcia. I sent an application in to start a blog but haven't heard anything back from them yet. I hope they respond soon because I'd like to do a blog for this upcoming weekend and the big SEMO Classic Tournament. We also play Bell City Tuesday night at home (which I'm sure will be a good game) and then head to Marquand Thursday night (which I'm sure will be a short game, ha) before we start pool play in the Classics. Last year in the Classics we were put in a pool where we had to play Notre Dame-St. Louis and I was so impressed with how our girls played. It was one of the few times where they weren't intimidated by playing a bigger and better school and they almost won; the scores were 19-25, 24-25 if I remember correctly. We made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Silver Bracket last year, defeating Southland in the first round in two sets and then triumphing over our all-time arch rival Advance in three sets before losing out to Woodland in two close sets. Notre Dame-Cape Girardeau went on to defeat Woodland for the Silver Bracket Championship. It's amazing how I remember all of this :) ha. Have a good weekend, Marcia!

I don't understand why everyone is saying that Leopold's defense is their weak spot this year. First off they hardly get any decent hits at them and when they do they get them to the setter like they should. And if a decent hit does come their way, it's usually blocked by the front row! So layoff the defense please thank you!!

littlefuturejournalist, I was surprised at the Advance Leopold match up Friday night. I thought Advance would give Leopold a handfull and be tougher compition, giving Leopold a chance to show off their defence. I don't see Leopolds defence as weak either.

Marcia, and her husband Tony, are avid Leopold Wildcat fans. Win, lose or draw, volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, they're in the stands, cheering for the mighty Blue and White.

Living in southern Bollinger County, they also enjoy watching the Zalma Bulldogs. The only thing that takes them away from local school sports is farming. That, thank heavens, usually starts about the time the school year is ending in the spring, so there is little conflict. They live in the Glennon community, with their dog Jay Jay, and their cat Miss Addie Lee.
