Cardinals fans play GM!

Posted Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at 12:20 AM

Roy Oswalt being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals has been a popular topic of discussion in recent days.

The St. Louis Cardinals enter Wednesday tied with the Cincinnati Reds in the N.L. Central race.

Oswalt has stated he would like to play for the Cardinals, Houston's front office has indicated they are interested in dumping salary and the Cardinals may need another starter for the final two months of the regular season after the announcement Brad Penny may not return to the mound.

What would it take to get Oswalt, however?

I think it's only appropriate we assume the role of GM the week of the trading deadline.

Is it worth trading Colby Rasmus or Jon Jay along with Brendan Ryan to land Oswalt? There's a good chance the Cardinals may have to throw one of their top minor league pitching prospects or Jaime Garcia in on the deal as well. How would this impact the future for the Cardinals?

Can the Cardinals afford to pay Oswalt $16 million next season? Is this the best way for the Cardinals to financially prepare to sign Albert Pujols?

Do the Cardinals players deserve an upgrade after all the money that was spent on the team in the offseason? Maybe it's time to put the blame on the players already on the active roster instead of the front office. Then again, maybe we should just give credit to the Cincinnati Reds.

Does having Oswalt make a difference? Perhaps the Cardinals are good enough to win the division and bad enough to not win the World Series with or without Oswalt.

These are the questions the Cardinals front office may be asking themselves in upcoming days.

I'm not exactly jumping on the trade for Roy Oswalt bandwagon. But I won't deny adding Oswalt's arm would improve the team's chances of winning it all. And winning it all is what I value most as a Cardinals fan.

What would you do?

I do not deny that adding Roy Oswalt would be a great addition and really help this years team, but I do not think it is good for the team for any year after this year. Having to give up anyone of Rasmus, Jay, Ryan, Garcia, or the prospect Shelby Miller would not be good they are all very promising players and I do not think we should trade them for Oswalt. Also not to mention the money he would cost would certainly not help the Cardinals in the efforts to keeping Pujols. I would not make this trade, at the demands that the Astros are asking for.

Thanks for the opinion that_1guy.

I concur with the position, if the money and players mentioned are accurate, I would not make the deal. I am still confident Dave Duncan doesn't have to have a "superstar" pitcher to help mold him into someone who could make a worthy contribution to the pitching corp. I am very encouraged with John Jay, and still think Colby Rasmus can be a fine all-around player. I'm a bit worried about Brendan Ryan's hitting, but think it's still early to give up on him just yet!

The idea of wanting whatever team gets him to pick up his $16million extension is what bugs me. He's got 2 years left on his contract, so we would have him for more than this season. If Houston were to eat some of his contract up, that wouldn't be so bad, however, I would think we would take a step backwards getting rid of John Jay or Colby. For one, our outfield isn't very deep. Randy Winn is a decent sub, but that's all he really is. He can't be looked at as an everyday player. Beyond that, Stavinoha isn't as strong in the outfield as well and looking at Memphis, they still have Mather and Allen Craig, but I can't see them being able to fill a hole that Colby Rasmus filled. Shelby Miller's name is being tossed around ALOT as trade bait. At this point it's hard to tell, he may be the next big thing and he may flop. At his age it's gonna be hard to tell, but I'd like for the Cardinals to hold onto him. All this rambling aside, it's a decision that I think we should pass on..yes he'll strengthen our rotation going into the playoffs, but looking long-term and overall I can't see it making sense.

I think the only reason the Cards are mentioned for Oswalt is because the Houston front office planted that info out there trying to get the Reds or Phillies to give up a little more - thinking the Cards could land him instead. The Cardinals aren't in serious talks with Houston is my guess.

They will most likely go after someone they can plug into the #4 spot like Guthrie, Francis, Westbrook or Sheets.

You might be right. The chances of the Cardinals landing Guthrie, Francis, Westbrook or Sheets could be much greater.

What if Oswalt would agree to restructure his contract? Would that change how you feel about the trade?

Do the Cardinals need a shortstop? Maybe replacing Ryan at short should be a higher priority than signing a starting pitcher???

there is a rumor floating around the internet that the cardinals are showing some interest in Miguel Tejada. They were interested in the off season but eventually went a different direction. Im not sure how long Freese is supposed to be out, but it seems that Tejeda would only help at 3B and Im not sure that is the answer for the Cardinals. Seems like help at SS or 2B makes more sense.

Interesting report that_1guy.

I personally do not think that the Cardinals will have to give up Brendan Ryan or Jaime Garcia for Oswalt. I think it would be John Jay, Mitchell Boggs, Fernando Salas, and Adam Ottavino. Astros are needing some pitching prospects in the bullpen and in their starting rotation. Mitchell Boggs would make a good setup guy for the Astros and Fernando Salas and Adam Ottavino could develop into some quality starters for them in a year or two.

Would you trade Jon Jay for Oswalt?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Wed, Jul 28, 2010, at 8:55 PM

It would be a tough decision right now because of how well Jon Jay is playing but we all have seen players have what I call "rookie season wonders". They have a great rookie year and we all think man he is going to be a star and then the next season he has a below average season and then it goes downhill from there. Rick Ankiel and Anthony Reyes are perfect examples of that. All I am saying is the Cardinals need someone to replace Jeff Suppan in the rotation. That way when/if Brad Penny comes back, instead of having 3 good starters and 2 starters that are under average in the rotation like they do now, they would have the toughest starting rotation in baseball.

I think they are fine the way they are now. I mean seriously they just went on a 7 or 8 game winning streak and during half of that streak Pujols didn't have a hit. They have some injuries and guys coming in to fill those shoes and actually performing. The Cardinals have quite a few guys playing and making things happen this year and nobody has heard of them before. Of course they have two insane pitchers right now and Holliday, Pujols, and Rasmus but they are getting a lot of help from little known players. I say lets see how this season plays out. My prediction is that they win the NL Central by 2 games.

Yeah, I just received word that Oswalt agreed to terms with the Phillies so this topic is now irrelevant haha.

Tejada was also traded to the Padres ... so much for that rumor

-- Posted by that_1guy on Thu, Jul 29, 2010, at 9:50 PM

I know the Cardinals chances are slim of getting this guy considering he is currently playing for a Cardinal rival. Any possibilities of the Cardinals picking up Ted Lilly??

-- Posted by baseballfan2010 on Thu, Jul 29, 2010, at 10:31 PM

uhh I think Ted Lilly plays for the cubs, and I think that is a cardinal rival

That is why I said I know the Cardinals chances are slim but I was asking if anybody thinks there is a possibility of the Cardinals getting him.

What the Cards need is someone to take over short or second. Lets face it, the entire team is terribly inconsistant. One week they win 8 in a roll and then go 4-6 after that. They are pathetic on the road, 8 games under .500. They really need Freese to come back sooner rather then later, and he needs to be healthy, which apparently is a lot asking from him. Ryan has batted around the Mendoza line all season, even dropping below it. Molina's offense, while not his strog-suit, has plumeted in the last several weeks. Pujols is swinging at a lot of bad breaking balls this year and will most likely blow past last years strikeout total. Skips making more errors in his second year than anyone would ever have thought. Whoever mentioned Ottavino can forget about him being trade bait when injured. I just don't see the competiveness from several guys, that I saw at the beginning of the year, and the Reds are not going anywhere, which has me worried about this year.

zalmanian

That was me that mentioned Ottavino because he was at one time considered a young prospect. However, I had no idea that he was injured.

Wonder what the Phillies fans thought about Oswalt's first start!
