Semoball in CoMo: Day 2 recap
Day 2 at the MSHSAA Basketball State Championships at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri, is always a bittersweet day. It's state, but it's a consolation prize.
While all three Southeast Missouri girls teams (Saxony Lutheran, Neelyville and Naylor) advanced into Saturday's state championship games, the two boys' representatives — Bloomfield and Gideon — played in third-place contests today after losing overtime contests on Day 1.
In the Class 2 afternoon game, Bloomfield held a 33-27 lead at halftime but struggled in the second half — especially the fourth quarter — while falling to Wellington-Napoleon 65-56.
The Wildcats finish the season — perhaps the school's best in 50 years — at 28-4. Wellington-Napoleon wraps up at 29-2.
In the Class 1 nightcap, Gideon bounced back strongly from it's semifinal loss, broke things open with a big second quarter and held off Glasgow 71-51.
It was an impressive run for the Bulldogs and their senior core, as they finish the year at 26-5. You can watch an emotional postgame press conference from Gideon here.
Glasgow finishes with a 26-4 record.
