LIVE BLOG: Class 1 volleyball state championship
For the first time in school history, Advance is state champions in volleyball.
The Hornets (37-2-1) defeated Calvary Lutheran 25-12, 25-23, to win the Class 1 state championship Saturday morning at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.
Advance finished the season on a 13-game winning streak, never dropping a set during that run. That included four straight-set wins at the final four.
Roz Schrader led the way with 23 kills on a .524 hitting percentage, and senior Addie Curtis had a double-double with 26 assists and 16 digs.
Nyah Wilson added five kills and eight digs. Schrader had eight digs, as well, and Alyssa Miles finished with 10 digs plus three kills.
It was Advance's second win over the Lions (27-11-2) in as many days. The Hornets swept them in the final pool-play game Friday.
Olivia Bexten led Calvary Lutheran, which is from Jefferson City, Missouri, with six kills pus 13 digs. Grace Smith had 19 assists and Madelynn Layson had 15 digs.
Check semoball.com later Saturday for a full recap and photos. The story and photos will also appear in Monday's Southeast Missourian.
