LIVE BLOG: Class 2-3 state basketball championships
The Oran boys basketball is back in the state title game.
The Eagles knocked off the defending state champions in Van-Far 58-40 in a Class 2 state semifinal on Friday at JQH Arena in Springfield, Missouri. It's Oran's 22nd consecutive win.
Jacob Shoemaker scored 24 points as the Eagles, the 2017 Class 2 state champions, will go for a second state crown in three years at 2:40 p.m. Saturday in JQH Arena. Their opponent: Greenwood, which boasts a five-star recruit in sophomore Aminu Mohammed.
Friday, Van-Far (22-8) opened the game on an 8-2 run, and Oran (30-1) trailed by one after the first quarter, 13-12. A Shoemaker 3 from Oran less than two minutes into the quarter gave the Eagles their first lead of the game. They led the rest of the way.
At halftime, Oran led 29-22 behind 14 first-half points from Shoemaker, who nailed four 3s in the second period.
Tyson Goodale opened the second-half scoring with a jumper to give Oran a nine-point lead. Van-Far responded with an 8-0 run to draw within one, holding the Eagles scoreless for more than four minutes.
Oran responded with an 11-2 run to end the quarter, with Shoemaker providing seven of the points, and took a 41-32 lead into the fourth.
The Eagles made that advantage stand up and knocked off the defending state champions.
