Live from Park Hills: Meadow Heights wins
Posted Wednesday, March 11, at 9:07 PM
The Meadow Heights girls basketball team, playing in its first state sectional game, leads Bismarck 51-48 heading into the final period of the Class 2 game at Park Hills Central.

Heather Dietiker hit a 3 to open the fourth period and it's been a lot of freshman Whitney Welker since that point.

Meadow Heights leads 60-55 with 5:45 to play in the game.

After Bismarck cuts it to three on a long 2-pointer by Brooke Taylor, Meadow Heights comes back with a putback by Welker and a layup by Dietiker on the break.

64-57 Meadow Heights, 3:33 to go.

The Panthers spend a lot of time at the free throw line, and pull off a 74-70 victory over Bismarck.

Some final food for thought: Top players in the area
Posted Wednesday, March 11, at 3:00 PM

If you have heard the rumors: Yes, this is my final day at Semoball.com; but no, I have not been tabbed by John Shafer to become SEMO's next basketball coach. I will begin working as the sports editor at a paper in Southern California next week. I am not a big believer in good-bye columns, but I want to say thanks to all the student-athletes, coaches, adult-athletes, officials, league organizers, race directors and administrators who took the time to answer my questions during the last five years.. ...

Similar games, different endings at Farmington
Posted Sunday, March 8, at 2:51 PM

It's kind of uncanny that both the Sikeston boys and Dexter girls basketball teams struggled in the first half, trailed by 10 at intermission and rallied to erase the deficit in the third quarter. But Dexter was able to get a boost from one of its go-to players in the fourth quarter and never trailed Sullivan, while Sikeston saw its lead taken away by yet another Borgia 3-pointer and never held the lead in the final 4 1/2 minutes...

Where would Bernie finish in the SEMO Conference?
Posted Wednesday, March 4, at 12:43 AM

I had my first look at the Bernie Mules on Tuesday night in the Class 2 District 3 semifinal round and was impressed. Bernie squashed Saxony Lutheran 80-48, using a 19-0 run at the start of the second period to put the game away. The Mules played pressure defense to speed up the pace and complemented that with depth to tire out Saxony Lutheran. ...

In its two biggest games late in the 2008-09 season, the Sikeston boys basketball team has shut down the opposition, rallying from five points down in the final minutes against both Scott County Central and Cape Notre Dame.
