You can know what I know when I know it (via text message)
Posted Tuesday, October 7, at 2:17 AM
OK, knowing what I know may not be the key to the world's great secrets, but we can use the modern technology to let everyone know when something new and interesting is hitting the Semoball.com Web site or when some area sports news is breaking.

The Southeast Missourian offers text-casting of score updates for the six area high school football teams and Southeast Missouri State, and you can use this same link to get the latest headlines from Semoball.com.

For instance, this Friday night, I will be attending the football game between Sikeston and Kennett, and we will be offering scoring updates after each quarter.

We will use the Semoball.com text alerts for playoff scores in football and other sports, including state tournament updates.

We'll also use the alerts to let you know when we'll have can't-miss video that you'll want to see, such as clips from the big games, like Farmington's comeback win against Jackson in football, the game-winning goal in Jackson-Notre Dame soccer or the penalty kicks that decided Jackson-Central.

We will send you links for state polls, area football stats and other breaking news, as well links to blogs, such as Marty Mishow breaking news on Tim Holloman returning to the SEMO football starting lineup or a SEMO basketball recruit being ruled ineligible.

If you can't wait to find out the latest sports news about area athletics, join the group.

A blog on SEMO football at Jacksonville State
Posted Saturday, October 4, at 8:16 PM

I am blogging like the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks football team: A no-show for the first quarter. But we'll both be coming on strong in the second half. Actually, I'm working on some projects in the office tonight, listening to the Southeast-Jacksonville State game on the radio...

More Friday night football: Kennett, Sikeston-NMCC, Jackson
Posted Saturday, October 4, at 2:46 AM

I have posted my blog with a link to the game story on Farmington's 42-38 victory at Jackson. Some of the video is up, including this 85-yard kick return for a touchdown by Farmington's Bryan Krause, who had 308 yards combined returns and receiving in the first half Friday night. (He carried the ball once in the second half and injured his ankle.)...

Farmington tops Jackson 42-38 in thriller
Posted Saturday, October 4, at 1:38 AM

You can click here to read the game story from Farmington's 42-38 win, and there will be video on the Semoball.com Web site later today (Saturday). I tried to play the lead of the game story off the old mystery thriller homicide line that says "the butler did it." The special teams did it to Jackson on Friday night as the combination of two long kickoff returns by Farmington's Bryan Krause, three missed extra point kicks, an unsuccessful onside kick late in the game and a bad snap on a punt undermined the Indians' chances to rally for the win. ...

Take on Toby football picks: Here comes Week 6
Posted Thursday, October 2, at 2:49 AM

Congrats to "semohoops" on a perfect run in tricky Week 5 of the prognistication contest. That was the only perfect sheet posted in the 12 games that featured few upsets in a pretty clean week. The toughest choice may have been the Chaffee-Scott City game as eight of the 19 prognosticators went with the Rams to get some revenge from last year's game on their homecoming...

Is Albert Pujols the NL MVP? (And other Cardinals stuff)
Posted Wednesday, October 1, at 4:03 PM

The National League MVP race seems to be pretty wide open without a candidate who combines excellent statistics from the entire season and the ability to lead his team into the playoffs. That leaves a door open for St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who had another one of his consistent seasons with a .357 batting average (second in the league), 37 home runs (tied for fifth), 116 RBI and 100 runs scored in 148 games...

Chaffee vs. Scott City football -- and high school ranking updates
Posted Tuesday, September 30, at 8:13 PM

There was no shortage of motivation last week for the annual rivalry game between the Chaffee and Scott City football teams. Host Scott City was ready to avenge last year's 21-19 loss to Chaffee that had ended the Rams' dominance -- 21 straight wins -- in the series...

USC has Mizzou, others right where it wants them
Posted Tuesday, September 30, at 1:40 PM

In the course of three days last week, I heard the following analysis of college football from the folks on ESPN radio: Thursday: Southern Cal is unbeatable (Mel Kiper Jr. had the Trojans penciled into the championship game, probably against Oklahoma, because it sounded like that was the showdown of the two best teams that fans deserved)...

SEMO plans to place priority on athletics
Posted Monday, September 29, at 7:22 PM

During Friday's meeting of the Southeast Missouri State Board of Regents in St. Louis, the board approved the addition of a Priority One objective for the strategic plan to deal with athletics. The item becomes one of six Priority One areas. More detailed steps to meet the goal of the objective will be outlined prior to the board's next meeting in December...

Some I-AA financial numbers to chew on (as SIU hires money maker)
Posted Saturday, September 27, at 12:26 PM

On the way to Terre Haute for today's big SEMO football game -- the Redhawks dug themselves a 14-0 hole but moved back within a touchdown against Indiana State, which is trying to break a 17-game losing streak -- I picked up a copy of the Southern Illinoisan newspaper and saw the teaser on the front page to SIU's hiring of a fund raiser...
