Friday night hoops

Posted Friday, February 8, 2008, at 5:44 PM

It was funny to hear Poplar Bluff coach Lamont Frazier refer to Tuesday's win against Caruthersville as a "trap game."

The gambling term refers to a game you are favored to win, and looks easy on paper, but can turn into a loss if you're looking ahead to the next big contest.

The top three teams in the Semoball.com ratings have games tonight that could sneak up on them:

* Notre Dame hosts the aforementioned Mules.

* Jackson hosts New Madrid County Central, which is in the midst of a tough stretch that included a loss Thursday to Scott County Central.

* And Sikeston travels to Cape Central, which has a five-game losing streak that includes a six-point loss to Notre Dame and a three-point loss to Jackson.

(I'll be heading to Central to get another look at the Sikeston Bulldogs and Central's Jajuan Bell. This weekend, I will post a Weblog entry of the top players in the area that I have seen, by class. That should start some debate and begin narrowing the field for the Semoball 5 selections.)

Also tonight, Dexter caps a big week of girls basketball by hosting Perryville. That game could seal up the Class 4 District 1 top seed for the state-ranked Bearcats. The seeding meeting is Saturday.

And the Ozark Foothills finals are tonight with the girls game pitting Naylor against Greenville for third time and the boys final matching Doniphan against Twin Rivers.

Other boys games of note: Malden is hosting Puxico and Charleston is at Portageville.

I better see Jake Leet's name at the top of that list Toby

Are you ranking them in their individual class or just naming names?

Toby Carrig's response:
Starting fives, with a first and second team on at least the seniors.

Sounds pretty cool, I'll be looking forward to it. While I'm thinking about it, I'd like to say you guys have done a great job with the site this year. Good, broad coverage, interesting blogs, along with polls to get everybody arguing.

you can't rank Leet as the top player in the area as he has disappeared against the top teams from st louis. i believe the top player would have to be willen from notre dame or porter from sikeston. the best defensive player would have to be rigginns from charleston

yes you can rank him there because he has more game than willen will ever has and hes 5 inches shorter playing class 5 schools and hes not half the sissy willen is, brokeback willen

You're making yourself look dumber with every post. Wish I was man enough to run down high school kids on the internet. You're a tough one.

I would put Marty Dames on best defense over Riggens any day

Dames is a good defensive player. But Riggens is on a different level.
