Jill Kennedy, the Zalma native and SEMO grad competing in her third Paralympic Games, has sent along a couple more items from Asia, where she is preparing for the event in Beijing.
Her blogs cannot be posted until after the Olympics, but she has passed along some information notable for those who want to follow along: She competes in the discus on Sept. 13 and in the shot put on Sept. 15. Kennedy was leaving with the team on Tuesday from Japan to China. Also: "Viewers will have the opportunity to watch the Paralympic Games, Sept. 6-17, with daily live and delayed highlight shows on UniversalSports.com and usparalympics.org. The official U.S. Paralympic Team site will also host daily video blogs from U.S. athletes and delegation members. Beginning in 2009, the U.S. Olympic Network will re-air portions of the 2008 Paralympic Games.... Also check out paralympicsport.tv." This year's Paralympic Games, which are the quadrennial elite sporting event for the physically disabled, will feature 4,000 athletes from 150 countries. The United States has 213 athletes, two with ties to Southeast Missouri. The other is Susan Beth Scott, a Cape Girardeau teen who will swim in the Paralympic Games for the first time. Her father, Mike Scott, has posted an entry as the family prepares to join Susan Beth in Beijing for the event.
The state high school football poll was released Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. and Southeast Missouri teams Jackson and New Madrid County Central tumbled out of the rankings after Week 1 losses. Hayti moved up from No. 7 to No. 6 following its opening win against East Prairie. You can follow all the high school football action in Southeast Missouri at the high school football page, which includes rankings, previews, feature stories and game stories. It also will be the home of the weekly score updates. The preview section includes recently added content from the Sikeston Standard Democrat, which published its section Sunday following the opening night of games. The section included an interesting package on the history of high school football at Sikeston, which began 100 years ago. You can read the feature story here or the decade-by-decade review here. A lot of great names mentioned in both.
Speaking of great stories, the Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic had one in Wednesday's edition on five soccer players who survived a scary car accident last week. All five, including J.P. McCoy, who was taken from the scene by helicoper, played in Tuesday's intrasquad game.
Softball fans may want to check out this story: Twin Rivers pitcher Carlee Vancil struck out 25 batters in her team's 1-0, 10-inning win against rival East Carter. She pitched a no-hitter, but the Royals barely came out with the win thanks to a 20-strikeout performance by Courtney Newman.
Lastly, want to put faces and voices with the names on the Southeast Missouri State football roster. You can check out the interactive roster, with brief video clips from each of the players who attended media day in August. |
