Live from Faurot Field: SEMO scores, but loses 52-3

Clouds fill the sky above Columbia, Mo., as the SEMO and Mizzou football teams get ready to tangle at Faurot Field in the home opener for the Tigers.
Looking for some reading material, just in case, say, the game gets out of hand? The Columbia Missourian did a feature on Eddie Calvin. Never mind the incorrect info about the 100-yard interception return from last week; it took place last year. Another story talked about the financial aspects of the game and the reaction to playing an in-state rival. The Columbia Tribune had this story on SEMO coach Tony Samuel.
Southeast opens with two runs, then a pass from Matt Scheible that was incomplete.
Mizzou's first drive moves into SEMO territory. On one catch, Chase Coffman hurdles Eddie Calvin and keeps running for a first down. Touchdown Derrick Washington on a 5-yard run. 7-0 MIZZOU with 10:51 to play in the first quarter.
SEMO goes three-and-out. Doug Spada launched a nice punt and SEMO covered it well to bring down Jeremy Maclin at the 17. But, Mizzou marches 83 yards on six plays in 1 minute, 42 seconds. On one play, Mizzou had three wideouts on the right side and passed that way, while Missouri had only two defensive backs in the area, leading to a big gain. Chase Daniel passed to Maclin 3 yards for the touchdown. Mizzou, 14-0
SEMO's third drive brings the Redhawks into Missouri territory for the first time. Houston Lillard, who has been occasionally spelled by Schieble, has hooked up twice with Walter Peoples for first-down pickups, including a 15-yarder to Mizzou's 45. Lillard's pass toward Miles Edwards inside Mizzou's 5 looked catchable, but SEMO picks up the first down on the next play with a pass to Williamson. SEMO can't get any closer than the 11, and Doug Spada's field goal attempt is blocked. Ouch.
Missouri needs just four plays to come back down the field for its third touchdown, and the fourth play is a dandy. Jeremy Maclin took the snap and threw a lateral to Chase Daniel on the right side of the formation. Daniel then threw a pass back across the field to Derrick Washington, who leaped over the defender at the goal line. 28 yards. Missour, 21-0. Time winding down in the first quarter. Probably not enough time for Mizzou to score until the second quarter, unless Maclin takes it to the house.
Chase Daniel in the first quarter: 10 of 11 for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Lillard is 7 of 14 for 68 yards. Spada's three punts come in at an average of 49.3 yards.
Mizzou completes an 83-yard drive in 2:48 to take a 28-0 lead with 12:12 to play until halftime. Chase Daniel's third TD pass goes 28 yards to Jared Perry. Missouri 28-0
Missouri's defense gets in on the action with an interception of Houston Lillard -- SEMO's first turnover. Sean Weatherspoon takes the pass by Lillard in the left flat and runs 67 yards untouched for the score. 11:19 to go in the half; Mizzou 35-0 The line was 50 and I thought Mizzou would settle in with a 49-point win, but they may have that margin at halftime.
Mizzou, 42-0 Washington's 5-yard run capped a 48-yard drive.
Did you know?: Last year in the loss to Big East member Cincinnati to open the season, SEMO trailed just 19-3 at halftime. The final ended up being Bearcats 59-3 with 40 second-half points. SEMO played well in the early stages, bending but not breaking on defense before turnovers -- four lost fumbles and two interceptions -- compounded the difference in talent. Cincinnati ended up with 615 yards of offense. SEMO's defense is not ready for this kind of challenge tonight.
Chase Daniel's day is done before halftime. SEMO holds Missouri, with backup Chase Patton at QB, without a first down on the Tigers' sixth drive. Jake Harry punts for the first time. (Jackson grad Grant Ressel, a redshirt freshman, is listed as the No. 2 punter on the depth chart.)
Spada misses Southeast's second field goal attempt as time expires in the first half. Chase Daniel's line: 16 of 17 for 245 yards and three touchdowns. He hit 14 straight passes to end his night, one short of a school record for consecutive completions. HALFTIME: Mizzou 42, SEMO 0
Missouri opens the second half with freshman Blaine Gabbert, who last year was the quarterback at Parkway West, behind the center. He completes his first pass.
In the fourth period, Doug Spada has kicked a 41-yard field goal to put Southeast on the board. The shutout is denied. SEMO 3, MIZZOU 45
Jimmy Jackson of Caruthersville scored the last touchdown for Missouri. FINAL: Mizzou 52, SEMO 3 |
