Take on Toby football picks: Week 3
Posted Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at 7:36 PM<< Previous | Read comments | Respond | Email link | Next >>
10-3 was a common mark among prognisticators in Week 2 of the Take on Toby football picks, with yours truly hitting that same number.
Five others tied with me, while two newcomers showed the way with their picks and zoomed up the points standings by beating me and the field.
"USC_2860" hit 11 of 13, misfiring only on Chaffee (as did all 14 pickers, not expecting the triple-overtime loss at Fulton County, Ky.) and picking Charleston over Sikeston in the 100th anniversary game. He wasn't the only one to go there, but only one other did.
"EpNation" missed on Chaffee and picked Perryville over De Soto, as did everyone else but "USC_2860."
Dexter's 40-20 loss to Gosnell (Ark.) was incorrectly forecasted by 10 of 14 prognosticators, and six pickers went with Parkway South to make Jackson 0-2.
Among those joining the group in Week 2, we say hello to "Hello," who topped last year's contest in wins (105) and winning percentage (.827), the only one to finish ahead of me in either category.
Here are the updated standings, in order of total won:
On to Week 3 ...
... and this isn't going to be easy.
Beginning with the Southeast Missouri State game against Tennessee Tech, with kickoff less than 24 hours away, it's going to be a tough week.
I checked the Massey Ratings Web site to see what it thought of the high school games. It also thinks the games will be close: the projected scores on the high school games include two ties, Potosi at New Madrid County Central and Dexter at Sikeston; while Caruthersville is listed as a "four-point favorite," for lack of a better term.
I'm taking the home team in all three, and I don't think I would have taken Sikeston over Dexter if you asked me a week ago.
Interestingly, the Massey Ratings also list Tennessee Tech as the No. 2 team in the FCS (formerly I-AA). So, take that for what it's worth.
With SEMO at home, and Tennessee Tech having lost some secondary players, I'll take the Redhawks in a shootout, 45-31.
I also like Chaffee to spoil Crystal City's debut on its new artificial surface, since the Hornets have lost a lot of talent from last year.
East Prairie-Scott City also should be a good clash, considering Scott City's defense (1 TD allowed in two games) against East Prairie running back M.C. Williams, who scored five last week.
Another tricky one to pick is a battle of unbeatens: Hayti takes its young, speedy team to Kennett, which has veterans in Blake Parr and Jarvis Finley.
St. Vincent travels to Valle to try to extend its success in the rivalry, but the Warriors are coming off an impressive win against city rival Ste. Genevieve.
This could be a week that separates prep insiders from those who outsmart themselves, or it could be the week I just get my lunch handed to me.
Here are my picks. You can add yours in the comments. Good luck.

EpNation,
I believe....
I believe the Eagles are gonna get their butts handed Friday night!
Give me a break! Who in their right mind would pick EP over Scott City?
The Rams are gonna humiliate the Eagles on their own field in front of their families.
Instead of playing well and making their mommas proud, the Eagles are gonna drown in a lake of shame poured on by the Scott City Rams defense!
42-6 Rams
MC Williams will have less than 50 yards rushing.
Eagles will once again give up a ton of points and a ton of yards! They are too weak up the middle!

Almost forgot Tech over SEMO
Semofootball,
While you do have your right to post your opinion, I will ask that you refrain from making anymore negative comments about our team. They are young men participating in a sport. They do not deserve your scrutiny or malicious commentary. Their lives do not begin or end with this contest on Friday night nor do we expect them to place such an extreme emphasis on the game, as you have yourself. I have noticed in previous posts, you seem to have a personal issue with the East Prairie Eagles. I hope you will soon feel you can move on and forget past transgressions that have worked you into such a frenzy. Life is too short for grudges.
These young men spend hour upon hour preparing for games. They work hard at what they do, while folks like you sit in a cubicle behind a keyboard judging them. Your comments are unnecessary and they do not have anyplace in high school athletics. So before you make any other comments, think of who you are affecting. These are high school kids…not paid athletes.
To all high school athletes:
Do not pay attention to people like "Semofootball". They more than likely do not understand the type of commitment it takes to participate in any extra-curricular activities. Keep working hard…good things will come your way.

Hey semofootball scott citys coach evidently is not that good because his overall record is 12-27. With a record like that i am not sure his defense is very good. Stats don't lie.
Thanks for the reminder....
I'll take Hayti in convincing fashion over Kennett.

Dear semofootball, thank you for taking the burden off everyone elses shoulders and being the biggest jerk in the southeast missouri area. I seriously cant wait to see what you have to say in week five when your head will probably balloon up again when the red devils come to town. If you noticed I skipped week 4 because a prick like you wouldnt dare mouth a team that he knows WILL give them a beating. Congrats on the coming off your ego trip, its bout damn time.
semofootball is very good at providing bulletin board material.
Do you really think I'm from Scott City? If you'll check previous posts, I chose Chaffee over Scott City (i assume that is the game you are referring to) when schedules were posted in the preseason. I mentioned they might have some defensive problems with May being gone. They played two tough opponents the last two weeks (though I did expect them to win at Fulton Co.) While I was surprised by the thumping the the Eagles gave the Rams...stuff like that happens. Sometimes morons shoot off at the mouth...hell, the way I figure...it's a 50/50 call. They either win or they lose. Let's be honest with ourselves here. Do you really think Chaffee WILL put a beating on Scott City. The difference in the EP/Scott City game was obvious speed. As far as speed goes, Chaffee and Scott City match up very well. This game should be a lot like last year. They both are similar upfront...though Chaffee does appear to have the upperhand. The only live games I've seen of both were Scott City vs. Malden and Chaffee at Fulton. QB-wise, Horrell is much better than Page. Horrell controls his offense better and he has better zip and touch on his passes. Defense...Scott City looks good. Other than the fall apart this week, they've only allowed 6 points the first two weeks. Chaffee allowed 8 against a horrible Grandview team. Scott City's RBs,I think #27 could be a great threat if he got the ball more. run well, but so do Chaffee's. #34 and #31 are both formidable threats for the Devils. If I were Scott City, I would be more concerned about Chaffee's "Bone" set. From what I've heard, EP pounded the ball on them all night. Like I stated earlier, I'm not from Scott City. I just posted what I felt would happen. I'll certainly be at your Week 5 matchup. It should be a good one. I think Scott City has the emotional edge though...I would have to say the score would be...c'mon, if you guys get this worked up over a game you're not involved in...I'll just keep it to myself. Good luck devils and rams.
