Take on Toby football picks: Week 4 (Can it be any worse than last week?)

OK, Week 3 did not get off to a good start for me when I picked Southeast Missouri State to beat Tennessee Tech, and the Redhawks lost the Ohio Valley Conference opener at home 29-27.

To compound matters, I was accurate on only six of 13 high school picks. That's not a very good percentage.

I had some company, though most of the prognosticators beat me, and they picked up the one point for doing so. That's probably a good thing as four newcomers joined the ranks in Week 3, so my being beatable gives them a chance to catch up in the points race.

However, the real story of Week 3 is "Jean_Valjean," who was a ridiculous 12-2 on his picks. The next-closest was nine, so the 12-correct total stands out.

"Jean" was tripped up by Hayti's one-point loss at Kennett, which fooled everyone but "Oschemer" and "Iliketoeat." And "Jean" picked Caruthersville over Piggott (Ark.), which was correctly picked by seven of the 16 forecasters last week.

"Jean" was the lone forecaster to take Gateway Tech over Jackson (a 14-7 decision) and Potosi over New Madrid County Central, and one of the few to hit on Hannibal over Poplar Bluff, Crystal City over Chaffee and the East Prairie beating of Scott City. Impressive work (and a bonus point for standing alone atop the field).

The Scott City-East Prairie game was the subject of many comments last week. Only 4 of 16 tabbed East Prairie. I thought it would be a tight one, but the Eagles went wild with a 35-0 victory (five touchdowns and 259 yards rushing for M.C. Williams).

Here are the updated standings. (I was wrong on just 26 games last year our of 100-plus games, so this 17 wrong total has me worried.)

On to Week 4

And it can't come fast enough for me.

We will see if I've learned anything from the last few weeks.

Tempted to go out on one limb with Perryville (1-2) hosting a meeting of Class 3 schools in Friday's battle with Park Hills Central (2-1).

(Missouri games will return to the list when the Tigers get back to playing BCS conference schools.)

i have a feeling sikeston at jackson could be a fun one. jackson has pretty solid defense every year, and sikeston definitely has some big playmakers on offense this year. jackson has had trouble scoring, but that's against tough competition. sikeston's defense hasn't been that solid this year. jackson's adam zweigart may have a big game. sikeston's eli jackson is averaging 165/game on the ground. how long has it been since sikeston beat jackson? how long has it been since sikeston won AT jackson? do you have stats on that, toby?

Sikeston beat Jackson in the 2002 season at Jackson.

-- Posted by jean__valjean on Thu, Sep 18, 2008, at 9:08 AM

I forgot about the 2002 win. So, it's only been two straight losses AT Jackson (2004 and 2006). I wonder what the all-time series W-L is.

I'm not sure of the all-time series record Sikeston has against Jackson, but at one time Sikeston was way ahead in the series by more than 20 games. Jackson has closed the gap in the last 10 to 12 years. They've closed the gap or widened the gap on pretty much everybody in that stretch. Jackson has clearly set the standard for football in the SEMO area since 1994.
