Congrats to "semohoops" on a perfect run in tricky Week 5 of the prognistication contest.

That was the only perfect sheet posted in the 12 games that featured few upsets in a pretty clean week.

The toughest choice may have been the Chaffee-Scott City game as eight of the 19 prognosticators went with the Rams to get some revenge from last year's game on their homecoming.

Chaffee won 28-6. I went back and forth before settling on the Red Devils, figuring it would be a close contest. I liked what Chaffee was doing offensively in being able to run and pass. The passing game was big for Chaffee with two big plays in the first half, and Scott City was able to move the ball but turned it over seven times.

The game that tripped me up was Poplar Bluff's homecoming win against North County, which goes down as one of the few wins for a Southeast Missouri team against a Mineral Area team.

Other than the perfect week for "semohoops," nine people were tripped up by just one game, and it's interesting to see what games they were:

-- "Myershallred," "USC_2860" and "cstan" picked Indiana State over SEMO;

-- "Hello" and five others selected Jackson to beat Hazelwood Central.

-- "justasportsfan" and "iliketoeat" went with the St. Pius upset over St. Vincent.

-- "semo7178," "Missco" and front-running "jean_valjean" went with Scott City.

Here are the new standings:

Here comes Week 6

We begin the second half of the season with some tough ones (while Hayti and Scott City rest for next week):

New Madrid County over Sikeston. Ought to be an entertaining and fairly high-scoring affair when the 3-2 Eagles travel to 3-2 Sikeston. The Bulldogs have the highest-scoring offense in the area, but New Madrid has shown flashes of shutting down good teams for a stretch (blanking Poplar Bluff in the first half) and can score if it can avoid turnovers. The kicking game could be costly for New Madrid, though. NMCC 32-28. (Massey Ratings says NMCC 27-26.)

Farmington over Jackson. The newcomer to the SEMO North Conference makes a statement at Jackson. Last year, this would have been a great showdown. This year, the Indians have taken some lumps from a tough schedule and won't have top running back Adam Zweigart on Friday. Farmington 35-20, which is saying something against that defense. (Massey says Farmington 24-22.)

East Prairie over Chaffee. The visiting Eagles bring the area's top running back, M.C. Williams, to town, and the Red Devils looked susceptible to the run last week. EP 42-14.

Caruthersville over Portageville. Battle of the winless, but host Caruthersville has been close in losses to respectable teams St. Vincent and Kennett.

Fredericktown over Perryville. The Pirates have pushed their Class 3 foes from the Mineral Area, but the unbeaten and state-ranked Blackcats have a good one in running back Joey Lewandowski.

St. Vincent over Crystal City. Both teams have played tough schedules with the 1-4 Hornets only win a two-TD victory over Chaffee. The Indians buried St. Pius last week and seem to be on the right track in time for district play. (Massey says 21-17 St. Vincent.)

Poplar Bluff over Cape Central. The Mules, SEMO North contenders, will keep the Tigers winless.

Dexter over Charleston. The Bearcats go for a second straight win after the 0-4 start.

Kennett over Malden. The tough stretch continues for the Green Wave, as Kennett's offense has been racking up points nearly at will during the 5-0 start.

Saturday's college games:

Jacksonville State over SEMO. This could get ugly if SEMO can't slow JSU QB Ryan Perilloux.

Missouri over Nebraska. It's the Big 12 opener and a road game for the No. 3 team in the country. The Tigers have too much offense for this one.

Its going to be a long Friday night for Malden! The Indians this year only know's how to do one thing and that's WIN!

-- Posted by Justin Davis on Thu, Oct 2, 2008, at 7:18 AM

The New Madrid and Sikeston game is game of the week. I don't see how anyone can dispute that! Both teams have had a tough string of games and I think this will show that both teams are better than what their record shows.
