Sikeston boys defeated by BorgiaPosted Sunday, March 8, 2009, at 7:42 AM
St. Francis Borgia eliminated Sikeston with a 51-41 decision, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-2 in the final 2:40.
Nathan Scheer, whose status was uncertain and who came out of the locker room on crutches after the game, scored on a layin with 2:20 remaining to give Borgia a 42-39 lead. After Sikeston failed to convert on its trip, Borgia's Michael Dempsey hit one of two free throws. Sikeston's Eli Jackson missed two free throws and Borgia closed it out by hitting nine consecutive free throws before missing one with the game no longer in doubt. Sikeston senior Michael Porter finished with 13 points, including back-to-back baskets to the game at 39. Eli Jackson had 12 points and seven rebounds. Borgia had 10 3-pointers, including eight in the first half while building a 26-16 lead. Dempsey finished with 18 points.
Sullivan leads Dexter 22-12 at halftime of the Class 4 girls state quarterfinal game. The Eagles have grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and outscored the top-ranked, undefeated Bearcats 14-3 in the second quarter. Comments Showing most recent comments first [Show in chronological order instead] |

dang chase, did i call that one or what? You looked horrible gettin dunked on
I like how Mcclendon just googled who all was on the '92 bluejays team. Like you really know every player from a team that was playin when you were 1 years old
You will get put out, by about 30, against Maplewood.
borgia has great basketball tradition and remember borgia won without one of the best jrs in the state at full strength. wow what a bunch of shooters they have. WOW
The bible says "judge not unless you be judged"never put your mouth on a kid because baby karma come back around how would you feel if someone would have made a comment about your child they way you did cal god is watching you!!!!!!!!!Sikeston Bulldogs09
jayjay,
I bet your coach would not be happy with the comments that you write on this site.
You are correct semohoops it was Eldon in the finals (they were the ones who only scored 19 pts) and Troy in the semis. Never the less '92 was the first year c-town beat borgia then lost the next three times (Lennies twice and Bobby once). Borgia has a very nice basketball tradition, Sikeston has nothing to hang their heads about. Nice season red dogs. M Porter was a very good high school basketball player, enjoyed watching.
They never had a chance? Were you even at the game jayjay? It was a tie ball game with 2 minutes left. Nope, Sikeston never had a chance!!
I have 2 predictions for you. First one is you will FOR SURE beat Bloomfield. The next one is you will end your season in the same round as Sikeston.
I didn't know for sure if they played Borgia in 92. But I know for sure they played the three years I mentioned and Mac was there for two of them. The team Charleston beat in 92 in the title game was Eldon, not Troy.
Yeah the Great Charleston Team of 1992,i see that team in the trophy case.(Carlos McCauley,Corey Fraizer,Shanna Cooper,Diondrae Foster,Iric,Farmer,Jason Bledsoe,Richard Ware,Ray Spence,Anthony Demyers,Frentriss Williams,Tim Frazier,Hernando Rowe)THEY SMASHED BORGIA!!!!!!AND WON STATE!!!!
Charleston beat Borgia in '92 I think it was 60-31. Borgia scored something like 6 points total in the second half. Game ended on a Richard Ware gym rattling dunk. '92 team went on to absolute destroy remaining competition to when state title. Held opponent in championship game (Troy) to a modern day state record of 19 total points. Was also there for the half-court shot, one of the two most amazing game winning shots I've ever seen. The other being ND over Sikeston '07.
KINGJAMES,
You should rush the floor in defeat too!!!!!Players need someone to lean on after bitter defeat!!!You agree?!?!
Sikeston looked like a team on a mission when they beat Scott Co. Central. All the hype, the crowd, friend & family competing against each other, but now it doesnt even matter. The Sikeston Bulldogs didnt even look like the same team when they played the Braves, they looked scared against Borgia and tight in the thighs.I told yall they needed MORE THAN 40+ POINTS to beat the Knights!!!!THEY CAME AWAY WITH 41 and 2 of those Borgia let them have!!!MICHAEL PORTER was no factor,WIGGINS played outstanding against the Braves, but even he was no factor against Borgia. Will Holified, was no factor and they never had a chance period. They could play today at Sikeston and they would hold the Bulldogs to 30+ points and score nearly 50+A TRUE PREDICTION.
The one thing we all must remember is that these are kids. I don't know cal lane and i only saw him play my braves, but to say he threw the game is just ridiculous. great season sikeston and i also hope mike goes to semo, so i can see him and otto jr. possibly in a couple years on the same team.
Charleston lost three straight years to Borgia in the quarterfinals in 93, 94, 95. McFerren coached for Charleston in 93 and 94. Spencer took over in 95. The 95 year was the infamous halfcourt shot that beat C-town.
shsbiggestfan,
I thought Darryl showed a lot of heart and played through a lot of pain the last few weeks of the season. You should be proud of him. Sikeston has a bright future with Howard, Dixon, Jackson, and Wiggins being returning starters. It doesn't hurt that the JV team won all but one game, either.
Charleston beat Borgia the first time they played each other in sectionals. So I don't know what coach you were talking to but it wasn't Mac.
Im ****** i have a child that plays for sikeston varisty team i know my son as well as micheal, darryl, cal, eli, wiggins, and dixon didnt play as good as they use to play but those guys tried the best they could to win the game im hurt to here someone with a small mind could get on this page and attempt to bad talk my son teammate cal,cal is still a kid and if someone would have said that about my son all hell would have broke loose.Like i said once before im not from sikeston and son isnt either but i know my son played his heart out lastnite with a fractured ankle and a sprung toe he has been hurt since the scc game there has being time with my son would limp day by day and get in the game and be hurting so bad that i as a mother could feel the pain, and i know alot of you people will know who i am its cool, all these kids played a good game i still got faith in all these guys.....mike,cal,and dominique have a good time in college and remember the"glove" mother and father will always have faith in you guys we love yall make sikeston proud......"Thats Keeping It Real"
that you so much for pointing that at "banellie" had made. Holifield did a good job coaching his guys last nite.i take my hat off to him because he did the best job he could do last nite besides letting Cal Lane play when he thinks he is a mike porter.
Starr33-
I'm sick of people getting on here and questioning coaching decisions. I know that Holifield and staff spent many hours scouting borgia and you have no idea what you are talking about. You seem to know so much about coaching and good decision making, I guess your team will be in Columbia next week? Sikeston lost to a very good Borgia team. Holifield,James, Sarakas,Self, James' Bulldog program 7th-12th grade is 70-7. Holifield has over 300 career wins. I don't think you have the right to question his decision making.
Our boys wanted to win-no team wants to loose.
Maybe Cal didn't play much because he wasn't on the court. When he did play, I can count 5 or 6 times he was WIDE OPEN down low and the guards just couldn't get him the ball for one reason or the other. You have to maybe benefit part of that to Borgia's defense. They did a pretty good job of limiting Sikeston's possesion's.
*sigh* Ok, you seem like a knowledgable fan. PLEASE explain to us how Cal didn't play and lost Sikeston the game? I would LOVE to hear your reasoning. (just a tip, use some grammar and punctuation when you give us your explanation, you lose credibility otherwise)
mike is the best player i have every seen in SE and cal lane is not he did not play n thats all i have to say
Well, if you think that High School basketball doesn't need a shot clock, then they might as well take out the play clock in football in high school as well, what is the difference? Besides some of these boys go on to play at the college level where there is a shot clock, I don't think anything is wrong with the "run and gun" as you call it, that is how these two teams played the entire game except or when it was late and Borgia milked the clock.
Yes, passing and dribbling and controlling the ball are crucial to the game, but if you want to put it that way a team could pass the ball and dribble it around for an entire period of high school basketball, and Borgia attempted that a few times in the game. That is ridiculous and they should have to prove they can win by playing the game, not playing keep away. They have basically all of the other rules the NBA and College have, why not the shot clock?
With your theory on them not needing a shot clock you might as well say they don't get free throws when they are in bonus or double bonus, they just keep having to inbound the ball because it is "Crucial" to the game. Give me a break.
Skeet26: We do not need a shot clock in high school basketball. When a team is holding the ball, it is up to the other team to D up and force a turnover. Dribbling and passing is just as crucial to this game as shooting the ball. Taking care of the ball is the name of the game in a close game. MSHAA should not make the game like the "run and gun" NBA----a league in which basic skills like free throw shooting are severely lacking.
For one thing, Cal Lane doesn't seem to see as much playing time as other guys do. When he does play, he seems to thrive off of putbacks. There were not a lot of those last night because Borgia did a great job defensively. Do you really need something to whine about that bad? I think Cal would probably be option 3 or 4 anyway, so him "not performing" is non-factor. Are you going to accuse Michael of not performing? He only had 13, about 10 less than his season average. Maybe Borgia just did a good job all around and was the better team?
What in the heck does prepfome mean?
cal lane did not prepfome last nite and thats that
I'm not even going to attempt to read all that caps-lock nonsense.
stars and jayjay use the same computer, apparently. The caps lock is stuck in the on position.
At the end of this article, Holifield explains his defensive sets:
http://semoball.com/blogs/carrig/entry/2...
OK SO HOLIFIELD SCOUTED BORGIA WHY DID HE NOT PRESS MORE IN THE GAME OR EVEN GO TO HALF COURT MAN TO MAN TO TAKE AWAY THE OUTSIDE SHOOTING. REST ASSURED FULL COURT PRESSURE PLAYED THE WAY THE BULLDOGS HAVE PLAYED AGAINST SOME OTHER TEAMS THIS YEAR DID CAUSE ALOT OF TURNOVERS IN THE BACKCOURT ALLOWING FOR THE EASY 2 PT BASKETS. REMEMBER THE LAFAYETTE GAME OPENING NIGHT AT THE SMC COACH HAD HIS KIDS PLAY FULL COURT AND WERE TRAILING BY 12 AND THEY CUT THE LEAD TO 2 AND THEN HE BACKS THEM OFF. I DO UNDERSTAND THE KIDS HAVE TO BE IN SHAPE TO DO THIS, BUT BY QUARTERFINAL ACTION EVERY KID ON ANY TEAM SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY FULL COURT EVEN MAN TO MAN FOR 4 QUARTERS AND 32 MINUTES. AS FAR AS THE OFFICIALS I AM QUITE CERTAIN THEY PROBABLY CAME FROM SOUTH COUNTY OR MIGHT HAVE BEEN FROM THE LEAD BELT AREA. BOTTOM LINE THEY HAD NO BEARING IN THE OUTCOME OF THIS GAME. SHOT CLOCK WOULD BE NICE IN HIGH SCHOOL BUT ON THIS LEVEL IF HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSE HAS A TIME FRAME TO SHOOT THE BASKETBALL THEN WE WOULD PROBABLY WITNESS MORE TURNOVERS. BORGIA CHOSE TO FREEZE THE BALL (COACHES DECISION) AND I AM SURE COACH HOLIFIELD WOULD HAVE CHOSE THE SAME THING IF THE BULLDOGS HAD OF BEEN AHEAD. MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT ONE TEAM WANTING A VICTORY MORE THAN THE OTHER IS A TRUE STATEMENT LOOK AT THE FIRST MATCH UP WITH FARMINGTON WHERE THE BULLDOGS BARELY CAME OUT VICTORIOUS 77-75 NOT EVEN TAKING THE LEAD UNTIL THE FINAL MINUTE OF THE THIRD PERIOD. THE BULLDOGS WERE NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT FARMINGTON ON THIS PARTICULAR NIGHT AS IT WAS THIS DAY THAT THE ANNOUNCEMENT CAME THAT THE BULLDOGS WOULD BE PLAYING SCOTT COUNTY CENTRAL ON 02/11/09 AND I AM CERTAIN THE HYPE ON THIS NIGHT WAS WE ARE GOING TO PLAY SCC INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON FARMINGTON. LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SECTIONALS A 30 PT BULLDOG VICTORY. GOOD LUCK TO THE DEXTER LADY BEARCATS AS THEY HAVE REACHED THE FINAL 4. GOOD LUCK THE SCOTT COUNTY CENTRAL, CLARKTON, BLOOMFIELD, BERNIE, CHARLESTON, LEGENDARY HEAD COACH JIM BIDEWELLS PORTAGEVILLE BULLDOGS, AND ALL THE YOUNG LADIES TEAMS WHO ARE GOING TO SECTIONALS HOPE TO SEE YOU MOVE ON AND REACH THE FINAL FOUR AND AS USUAL REMIND THE STATE OF MISSOURI HOW RICH SOUTHEAST MISSOURI BASKETBALL REALLY IS. ONE LAST THOUGHT ON MICHAEL PORTER GOING TO SEMO. IT WOULD BE CLOSE TO HOME FOR US ALL TO BE ABLE TO GO AND WATCH JUST LIKE WHEN BRETT HALE WAS PLAYING THERE OF COURSE THE CIRCUMSTANCES HAVE CHANGED QUITE ABIT SINCE BRETT. HEAD COACH IS UP IN THE AIR, NCAA INFRACTION ON TOP OF THE CURRENT INFRACTIONS IN PLACE, SEMO HAS NOT HAD A WINNING YEAR SINCE THE DAYS OF GARY GARNER. YES IT WOULD BE NICE TO SEE MICHAEL PLAY FOR SEMO AND WHO KNOWS THIS COULD GET SOME OF HIS COUSINS AND FRIENDS FROM SCC ALSO GOING TO SEMO AND FOR ONCE IN YEARS THE REDHAWKS WOULD FINALLY HAVE SOME LOCAL TALENT THAT WOULD DRAW MORE CROWDS INTO THE SMC. NOT CERTAIN BUT THEY PROBABLY HAS NOT BEEN A SELL OUT LIKE THE BULLDOG VS BRAVES MATCHUP IN YEARS.
I forgot to add Juqualin Wiggins as a returning player for next season.
I don't see the need to punish a team who can pass and handle the ball well and make them force a shot.
I thought the refs weren't the best either, but I thought they were consistent. Each team had a few calls go their way.
As a neutral fan who watched the game, I must say that MSHSAA needs to re-evaluate their game rules if not for the entire season, then at least for the games from District play and beyond. There NEEDS to be a shot clock in high school basketball especially in the playoffs! Sikeston was only losing by 2 or 3 points with about 2:30 mins left in the game and Borgia was just going to milk the remainder of that time unless they got fouled which ultimately is what happened.
Had Borgia actually had to try to get a shot off instead of milk the clock with that much game remaining Sikeston probably would have won with the momentum they were carrying late in that game. Not to mention the officials were horrible on both ends, but seemed to be a little favorable of Borgia. Again, just an outsider's opinion.
It gets a little old saying teams lose because "they don't want it much as the other team!" To state the players didn't want to win as much as Borgia is ludicrous!
I disagree that Borgia wanted the game more than Sikeston. I disagree with your comments about the coaching staff. Holifield went and personally scouted Borgia. He made a good defensive adjustment by putting Porter on the wing for the 1-2-2 defensive set. They held Borgia to 15 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarter combined. The only reason Borgia scored more points in the 4th was because of the free throws down the stretch. Sikeston does return some good players, but Michael Porter was the core of this year's basketball team. Three starters from this year return in Eli Jackson, Darryl Howard, and Niquavious Dixon.
1)THE BULLDOGS HAD AN OUTSTANDING SEASON A 23-4 RECORD IS NOTHING TO FROWN ABOUT.
2)IN REFERENCE TO CAL LANE WHO IS A SENIOR TAKE NOTHING AWAY FROM THIS KID HE DID HAVE SOME OUTSTANDING GAMES THIS SEASON AND I DID NOTICE AFTER HE WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE STARTING LINE-UP A LITTLE CHANGE IN HIS STYLE OF PLAY. KEEP IN MIND HE DID NOT CAUSE THE BULLDOGS TO LOSE TO BORGIA.
3)BORGIA WANTED THE VICTORY MORE THAN THE BULLDOGS DID. I PERSONALLY FEEL LIKE BORGIA SCOUTED THE BULLDOGS ALOT BETTER THAN WE SCOUTED THEM. THEY CLOSED AND PACKED THE PAINT ALL NIGHT AND ACCOMPLISHED KEEPING THE BALL FROM GETTING INTO THE HANDS OF 3 TIME ALL STATER AND MCDONALDS HIGH SCHOOL ALL AMERICAN NOMINEE MICHAEL PORTER'S, ELI JACKSON, AND CAL LANE'S HANDS. THEIR GUARD PLAY ON THE DEFENSIVE END WAS QUICK ATTACKING THE BALL IN WHO EVER HANDS IT WAS IN THEREFORE TAKING AWAY ANY KIND OF OUTSIDE SHOOTING.
4) MAYBE IF OUR STAFF WOULD OF SCOUTED BORGIA A LITTLE BIT BETTER MAYBE WE WOULD HAVE REALIZED PLAYING MORE FULL COURT TRAP WOULD HAVE BORGIA SOME PROBLEMS AND WITH OUR ABILITY TO PRESS AND STEAL THE BALL IN THE BACKCOURT AND SCORE EASY 2 POINT BASKETS THIS COULD OF BEEN A DETERMINING FACTOR IN THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME. WHEN THE NAME OF LEGENDARY HEAD COACH LENNIES MCFERRON'S NAME IS MENTIONED IN ANY ARTICLE YOU CAN'T HELP BUT THINK D=E=F=E=N=S=E. WE MISSED ONLY A FEW DEFENSE ASSIGNMENTS UNDER THE BORGIA BASKET AS THEY CONVERTED UNCONTESTED ON AT LEAST 5 LAY-UPS. ALSO NOT GUARD THE 2 GUARDS THAT WERE KNOCKING DOWN THE 3 POINTERS DID NOT HELP. BORGIA SCORED 26 PTS IN THE FIRST HALF AND 24 PTS CAME FROM BEHIND THE 3 POINT LINE. SO LACK OF DEFENSE NO OFFENSE TO SPEAK OF AND THE FACT THE BULLDOGS DID NOT WANT THE WIN AS MUCH AS BORGIA IN MY OPINION WOULD BE THE BEST REASONS FOR WHY THE BULLDOGS ARE NOT GOING TO BE PLAYING HELIUS AT 3:20 PM THURSDAY 03/12/09.
5) I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION AND THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION THE HIGH SCHOOL GAME OF THE YEAR IN MISSOURI WAS PLAYED AT THE SMC 02/11/09 (BULLDOGS VS BRAVES), I FEEL THAT SINCE THAT GAME THE BULLDOGS DID NOT SEEM TO BE THE TEAM THAT EVERYBODY PROJECTED THEM TO BE. I KNOW THAT WAS THE HARDEST AND MOST EXCITING GAME THEY PLAYED ALL YEAR AND IT IS SUCH A SHAME THE THEY DID NOT PLAY WITH THAT INTENSITY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR, CAUSE IF THEY HAD MIZZOU ARENA WOULD HAVE BEEN THEIR FINAL DESTINATION.
6) ENOUGH SAID THE BULLDOGS WILL ONLY BE LOSING 3 PLAYERS ONE BEING THEIR STAR MICHAEL PORTER ALONG WITH CAL LANE AND DOMONIC FONDON. SO THE CORE OF THE BULLDOGS WILL RETURN ALONG KIDS FROM THE JV WHO FINISHED THEIR SEASON 18-1 AND LETS NOT FORGET THEIR FRESHMAN TEAM WHO COMPILED A PERFECT 10-0 SEASON. THANKS FOR A GREAT SEASON BULLDOGS
I agree bluejay. To say a player threw a game of that magnitude is just ridiculous! Lane is a senior this year.
sikeston bulldogs 09: You cannot come on here in this forum and suggest a kid threw the game. I've seen the kid play all season--he is a competitor.
Cal Lane is a great athlete and I believe he is just a sophomore. He will likely win the high, long, and triple jump at the Missouri State Track and Field Championships this year.
Congratulations to the Sikeston Bulldogs on a good season. It would have been nice to have you represent SE Missouri in Columbia, but alas, that was not to be. Sikeston has nothing to be ashamed of---they simply ran into a better team---one that was disciplined and who shot lights out. I was particularly impressed with the way Borgia shot free throws down the stretch.
Although I was not following Charleston when they lost to Borgia on a last second shot, I have heard the story told many times. Any time you lose on the road to Columbia it is a heartbreaker.
Hopefully, SCC Braves or Clarkton Reindeer, Charleston Bluejays, Bernie Mules or Portageville Bulldogs will fair better on their roads to Columbia.
Hopefully SEMO will see the wisdom in signing Michael Porter so that local fans can have a reason to go to the SMC next season.
Nice posts on Michael Porter from mosports:
http://mosports.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?f...
im very proud of the bulldogs, but i feel like cal lane throw the game 2 nite he is a very sour player. just like T.O. form the cowboys. i dony care how good you are i would not have cal on my team at any time.
Before the BlueJay "Sikeston bashers" begin, don't forget years ago, when Charleston couldn't get past Borgia either. Lennies McFerron told me many times he couldn't believe his team lost to them the first time, and wanted a re-match, only to get beat the next year as well! Those things simply happen. That didn't diminish the accomplishments of his teams, nor does the game tonight (Saturday) diminish the outstanding job by the Sikeston players, coaches, and fans!
Congratulations!!!!!
