Ronnie Cookson's eventual successor likely will be former Bell City player

Ronnie Cookson told me today that Kenyon Wright was recently named his new assistant basketball coach at Scott County Central. And Wright will likely be Cookson's successor whenever Cookson decides to retire.
Wright, 23, is a former Bell City basketball player. He was a member of the Cubs' 2002 state title team. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State in 2007. He spent the past year as an assistant at Bernie High School. Before that he was an assistant at Scott County while student teaching.

Saxony Lutheran athletic director Larry Cleair said a new Crusaders head basketball coach would likely be named Monday.
"We've got a couple of good candidates," Cleair said. "Our principal is out of town now. I talked to him this morning on the phone and we talked things over because we did an interview yesterday evening and we didn't get a chance to talk after that. But we'll probably Monday morning go ahead and make the decision, give our actual choice that information and call those we didn't choose and then let the [public know]."
I spoke with new Perryville head football coach Jim May earlier this week. He said he is looking to establish more of a ground attack on offense although he said he has to find someone to run the ball since Kris Cottner is graduating.
I asked him if he was considering moving quarterback Josh Perreault back to running back. Perreault was a tailback until last year when he changed to QB.
"I'm pretty sure the Perreault kid is going to be back from all that I've talked to him so far and the other coaches," May said. "He runs the ball extremely well. I can see that from the film last year. He's not a bad passer. But he is an effective runner and it would depend on who we have as other quarterback options and who we have as other running back options. He would go into the best position to help us succeed. But going in I'm going with him at quarterback and then we'll see where we go from there."
May said he is excited to get into training camp in early June.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to be a head coach," May said. "That's first and foremost. And I'm excited to be going to Perryville. I've been there before and thoroughly enjoyed the school, the faculty and the kids. They have good kids there who work hard and a lot of good parental support and I'm really looking forward to being a part of that organization."
