Chaffee was routed 53-8 by East Prairie last week.

The Red Devils (3-3) face Class 2 Malden at home Friday.

Malden has a 1-5 record but the Greenwave have lost to two Class 1 ranked teams, Hayti and Thayer, and Class 3 Kennett, which has a perfect record.

Malden also lost 14-6 to Scott City and 41-7 to Dexter. Its only victory was a 41-8 triumph over Portageville.

Chaffee coach Charlie Vickery emphasized that Malden has played some strong opponents and competed well against Kennett, losing 27-16 last Friday.

"They brought a bunch of people on blitzes and they mixed up their coverage on Kennett," Vickery said. "They did a real good job because Kennett has a real good offense. They have an excellent quarterback and some good receivers. … They had a real good defensive plan and then offensively they ran two kickoff returns back for scores."

Vickery said his team must take care of the football better.

The Red Devils had four turnovers -- two fumbles and two interceptions -- against East Prairie.

"The glaring thing is that we've got to eliminate turnovers," Vickery said. "Any time you face a good team, which we're facing good teams right now, you can't give them a short field. We have got to eliminate that. The only way to eliminate that is to focus on what we're doing better."

Vickery said his defense must tackle better. The Red Devils defense did miss a number of tackles when trying to take down East Prairie running back M.C. Williams.

"We can't just sit back and try to play defense," Vickery said. "We're going to have to force the issue a little bit and be a little more aggressive on our defensive scheme. And we're going to have to come after people a little bit better. And obviously we need to tackle better by getting more aggressive."
