SEMO Conference baseball tournament

Posted Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at 11:55 PM

I've been impressed with the Notre Dame baseball team -- which won again Wednesday -- this time beating Jackson 10-1 to remain perfect at 16-0. Notre Dame has won the SEMO Conference and is the top seed in the SEMO Conference Tournament, which starts today when No. 9 New Madrid plays No. 8 Poplar Bluff at Poplar Bluff. The complete list of all the games is down below.

I asked Notre Dame coach Jeff Graviett about his great success in the regular season the past couple years. Graviett has led the Notre Dame girls softball team to two consecutive perfect regular seasons -- and with just 19 days remaining until districts begin, Graviett and his boys must be thinking about the possibility of a perfect regular season in baseball.

"It's a fun year," Graviett said after beating Sikeston on Tuesday. "Our goal coming into the year was to win the conference and win the conference tournament. Those are two of our early season goals. ... There's a lot of big things yet to happen, not to mention as we head toward postseason.

"It comes down to the kids," Graviett added when asked about his regular-season success. "Coaches get way too much credit on wins and losses. But these kids here in both programs work extremely hard and do a great job and we just try to put them in situations where they can be successful. And when you're winning, you feel as a coach you're doing your job with that. Again, we have an extreme amount of depth on this team and we keep trying to showcase that and put it in there and just keep trying to win baseball games."

I asked senior Ryan Bass about the success this spring and whether his team has some pressure heading into the conference tournament with an undefeated record.

Bass replied: "I think there's already enough pressure on us. Everybody has got a target on our back with [the No. 1 ranking in the] state poll. We came in with high expectations. Last year, we lost two people off the team but everybody else was returning from that team that went deep into the playoffs."

Expect the weather and prom(s) to wreak havoc on this schedule. Hopefully all games will stay on schedule but it's not looking good.

Yeah, I loved that salary I got when I played for ND.

Typical crybaby comment.

Now now farmboy. I'm not saying anybody gets paid, but a $20,000 projection screen batting practice thrower, and over $200,000 spent on the program since Aug 2008, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that no other school in this area can boast that bottom line. Plus when your school district is as far as people are willing to drive, that kinda helps too, come to think of it, you had a fairly lengthy drive yourself.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't private schools build facilities on donations? Or do they get funding from other places?

And forgive me if I get mouthy at times. I just hear a lot of baseless negativity in regards to Notre Dame, and it bothers me.

Are the district tourneys set yet? If so, is there somewhere online to see the brackets?
