This is more of a question? Why dont more schools in the semo area have football. They have the numbers. Schools like. Puxico,Senath Hornersville,Campbell, South Pem,Doniphan, Cape G Notre Dame,Kelly,Woodland, Twin Rivers,Greenville and the list goes on. These schools are big enough to support football. Why arent they beginning football programs.

I guess since this is semo"ball".com there won't be any talk of the NHL trade deadline from today?

That's ok. I got you covered local Blues fans.

The St Louis Blues have traded defenseman, Bryce Salvador (age 32)to the New Jersey Devils for Forward, and St Louis native, Cam Janssen (age 23).

The St Louis Blues have traded defenseman Christian Backman (age 27) to the New York Rangers for a 2008 4th round pick.

These are paste jobs from the capescene.com forum that I posted today.

That is all the Blues did, as they were sellers at the deadline.

While we knew it would be another spring without post-season hockey in St. Louis, todays events helped many people actually realize it.

whoever said scott county central hasnt beaten a 4or5class school is crazy.better do some research.they beat 2 big schools down in new madrid earlier this year and then beat a indiana school in perryville so yes they can and have done it already this year.i would love to see a match up of the braves and bulldogs.just think the bulldogs star came from scott central lol.so keep it real your poll isnt even close, look at the records.

Thanks for posting score you called that one right the only thing is you gave Scott City 10 to many. Congrats on big win I didn't think they would be any match for SCC I imagine the "D" was to much for them, and of course they couldnt stop the offense either. I think I can see the BRAVES holding up the State title trophy in the near future.

-- Posted by bludvl on Sun, Feb 17, 2008, at 11:09 AM

well yesterday i called the score to the braves and rams game well guess what the score was 86-55 not to bad.I bet they wont move up in this poll still yet.give credit where credit is due,and thats to the braves and coach cookson,my hats off to them they are playing some real good ball right now ,keep it up braves

Open Forum's response:
Here's the link to the game story: http://semoball.com/story/1312297.html

No surprise Scott County Central can handle Scott City. They'd done it two previous times, including the 82-48 blowout in December.

While I think the Braves would give Jackson plenty of problems with the defensive pressure and they might even be able to beat Sikeston, Scott County had one crack at a Class 4/5 school, and it was a 68-60 loss to Notre Dame in the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament.

I've thought most of the season -- with the exception of the stretch after Bell City beat the Braves up until the Cubs dropped two games -- that Scott County is the area's best chance for a state championship.

I will agree cant see SCC having to many problems with SC. SC has a good team but I think they are over rated. ( If you would post the score)

-- Posted by bludvl on Sat, Feb 16, 2008, at 12:42 PM

The braves plays scott city rams today at 2.i will go out on a limb and say the score will be 86-65 in favor of the braves

-- Posted by kmasters on Sat, Feb 16, 2008, at 12:27 PM

I have to agree with KMASTERS comment about SCC and BC. My kids go to ND, and I am 100% ND fan but I have to say SCC has one of the finest ball teams in the area bar none. I think i enjoyed watching our game with them this year more than any. I like the style of ball hard D makes things happen I think ND and SCC play alot alike definitely both play hard. And also was Bluff and Charleston score a misprint on KFVS or did the high flying Bluejays not fly to high last night.

Open Forum's response:
Charleston's leading player, 6-5 senior Brian Parham, was out with an injury. Still a tough loss.

looks like u have to be a team from around the cape area to get any recognition on this site.small teams like scott county ceantral or bell city dont have a chance.i bet u this i would put the braves up against any team in southeast missouri right now,and they would prevail with a victory.

-- Posted by kmasters on Fri, Feb 15, 2008, at 8:08 PM

I would just like to comment on media not giving East Prairie Eagles their due, yes this team started out rough but they have it together now and when they beat a district team (Scott City) at their own home coming no mention of them kick them while they are down but don't give them the praise that they deserve.

-- Posted by tac9274 on Sun, Feb 10, 2008, at 4:20 PM

Go braves they are the best team in southeast Missouri, maybe the state.we will be going to state to watch them bring home another state championship.Kudos to coach Cookson and the braves they deserve it

This is a great site with great info. I have one small request. It would be most helpful if the area high school basketball tournament brackets could be found on one site (perhaps this one?). I searched high and low for a Christman Tournament bracket and couldn't find one and now I would like to have a bracket for the Scott-Miss Conference tournament and there's no where online that has it. I guess I'll have to go to one of the area high schools to get one. It would be wonderful if we could just log on and print one off. I don't know how much trouble it would be but I know I for one would greatly appreciate it.

How many times have you seen Russell Martin? Don't let your Cardinal goggles blind you. Martin is the real deal.

-- Posted by semohoops on Mon, Nov 19, 2007, at 10:18 AM

The 2007 MLB Gold Glove Awards are a joke. How can one say Russell Martin is a better defensive catcher than Yadier Molina? The supposed smart people in the game (Managers and Coaches) vote on this award and must now be tested for drugs considering the results of the voting.

I just wanted to give the Eagle Ridge Soccer players a little recognition. Last night they took down Trinity Christian from Carbondale 5-0, this win puts the season record to 12-2-1. This includes 10 shutouts. With only 12 players on the team, every player has put a lot into the season so far. I am very proud of all my players, and look forward to the rest of the season.

-- Posted by ercscoach on Wed, Oct 17, 2007, at 10:11 AM

Yes I noticed, but there was a line at the very bottom of the sports page letting us know to look for coverage in tommorrow's paper. I guess they were to busy covering girls SB and OVC media day to even write a couple of paragraphs about tonights game. Talk about lazy, how much effort does it take to do minimal research and write a couple of paragraphs. On my job if their is a job to get done I get it done or suffer the consequences. Also, with all the support the Missourian is giving Brookins and blasting us bloggers, and then they ignore Central like that, sounds like hypocrisy to me.

-- Posted by Lion83 on Thu, Oct 11, 2007, at 2:18 PM

Cape Central has a home football game tonight and the only mention in the MISSOURIAN is the time of the game.

-- Posted by sideliner on Thu, Oct 11, 2007, at 8:51 AM

Marty, why don't you stick to writting your 20 columns a week on SEMO athletics. You must have fell recently coming out of the press box and hit your head to think that Brookins is doing his job to max abilities. The only reason he has won any district titles is either because of his great assisstants (Haggerty, Klund, and Miragueax) or a watered down district. As a media outlet I would think you would recognize that. At least you guys put the local teams in the paper. The local TV station does nothing but send crews to the surrounding states for coverage.

-- Posted by joesnider44 on Thu, Oct 11, 2007, at 8:28 AM

OK Marty, I see you like Brookins. You need to know that he talks different to reporters. Until you have been roasted by him you don't realize what he is like. He speaks with forked tounge. As far as District Titles, they don't mean much in FB the way the system is set up. Look at his overall record, his record the past 4 years, what he has done to the program and what he has done to some players. Plus go and look at successful HS FB programs and see if you can tell me that B is coaching Central well. Compared to what I have seen, he is NOT. A winning program is when you have a winning season every year not just when you win a few DTs.

ha... thats amazing that fredericktown has a quote "cupcake schedule" and is quote "afraid to play teams their own size." what do they want us to do? put desoto back on our schedule? they'll be in for a treat saturday in perryville. lose by 14 points? what a joke.

-- Posted by j_lew_33 on Wed, Oct 3, 2007, at 7:40 PM

That was an exciting game we had Friday night! Central was in that game the whole night, until they kicked off to start the game. Brookins, I hope that you get bored in your spare time, you know with all the coaching techniques you give the boys (Monday Night Football) to work on. You have got to be removed from coaching football after the season. I hope that it embarrasses you so much that you leave this town as well. I also hope that the Southeast Missourian has enough courage to do an article on your pathetic staff. Maybe you can give them so of your famous one liners. "We are a young team, we need to cut down on our turnovers, we were more physical than them, even thou the scoreboard does not show it we won that game tonight"! All of them are classics. I line my bird cage with your interviews, because that is what they are, a BUNCH OF CRAP!!!1

-- Posted by Central fanatic on Sun, Sep 16, 2007, at 7:01 PM

I did read the comments about Central being the winner in the NMCC game. I did not realize that Brookins was dislexic as well as a bad football coach. The next time Central football will win, will be when Dr. Scala replaces Brookins, Williams, and Schweinbold. That will be the biggest win in school history.

-- Posted by Central fanatic on Fri, Sep 14, 2007, at 7:47 AM

Did anyone else see Brookins say on tv that after watching the film of last Friday's game against NMCC that Cape was the winner and that Cape played better for 2 and half quarters. LOL

-- Posted by Lion83 on Thu, Sep 13, 2007, at 10:31 PM

Good job Toby. You deleted the ones I thought you would an kept enough to get the message across. There are problems with Central sports and with good honest debate maybe some changes can be made but let's all try to keep our comments civil and fair and still make our point.

-- Posted by Lion83 on Wed, Sep 12, 2007, at 9:41 PM

In regards to the comments about Central football it looks like the Missourian is practicing censorship. Violation of thier own principles. I guess Christopher didn't know he was stiring up a hornet's nest.LOL. There were some comments that needed to be deleted for foul language and some comments about Williams that could get him and the school in trouble if certain officials saw it so it was probably justified.

Open Forum's response:
I will look back through the list of comments and figure out which ones need to come off and which can stay. I was alerted about some posts late last night and locked that blog's comments. I should've known we would get comments on that subject; we have received them over the years for Fan Speak as well, but the barometer for the print edition is different: We do not allow anonymous criticism on the high school level; the salaries aren't quite the same as they are for the college and pro ranks. Letters to the Editor are welcome.

Honestly, seeing the comments that also are being posted on the game stories, I'm not sure what the standards will be when it comes to such posts about high school sports on the Web site. -- Toby Carrig, Semoball.com editor

Since my comment was taken down from the Brookins Blog I will put it here.

I think that if the Central Tigers can't or don't improve this year the school district should look in another direction.

Now, was that such a horrible post that it needed to be removed?

I would like to see semoball.com capture high school team stats much the way the post dispatch does it in st. louis. I think coaches would send in both football and basketball stats (volleyball for that matter as well) and people could really get a feel for a particular team.

With all of the local (smaller?) schools having a focus on ladies softball, why would a school such as Poplar Bluff not support a spring and fall softball team? I know that there are several teams that travel from this area, but it seems to me that this would take the focus off of the local school programs? I have been led to believe that the number of players on the Mules softball team are limited and are not always based on skill levels. A person would think that after the Athletic Director reported in the paper that participation was down in the area of ladies sports that changes would be made in this area.

Sikeston News:

Girls basketball coach for the 2007/2008 has been rumored to be Fred Johnson (again - coached a few games in 04-05 then quit: Said to be coaching 2 years for 05-06, quit after 1 season: Now he is line again?) And they wonder why there is no excitement.

Boys Football for next year: Rumored a number of worthy coached would have, I repeat, would have applied if not for the writing on the wall about hiring from within. Same scenario as girl's basketball. Let's hope not, Good luck to who ever it is.

Anyone got anything else?

Dear pujolsrox

After more time to think about where you are coming from, I'm still trying to figure out your message. I'm at a loss to what you are talking about. The school might have problems, but girls soccer isn't one of them. Its jerks like you that think they know what they are talking about, and really don't have a clue. And how did my daughter get involved in your ranting. If you know us, step up, if not, keep the heck behind your pujolrox personna. And as far as you knowing it all and then reporting what goes on that those coaches meetings, hope others read your stuff and not allow to to attend anymore. Good luck with that.

It looks like pujolroxless got one thing right. My daughters coach isn't a problem, never has been, he had allot of great ideas shot down by his bosses. He is one of only a couple people that care about girls sports. I have never and will never bad mouth him or other coaches that try to do justice for girls sports. Thanks for knowing who I am, but where did you hear such crap?

I guess I've been speaking too loud, or to the wrong people. Hey what are friends for anyway. I guess I'll continue to keep posted on this site since now I'm on a first name basis with everyone. Glad to know ya. See you at the game tonight?

pujolsrox i guess you are referring to the sophmore girl that is transferring from bluff to nd and suppose to be a stud soccer player. it's funny that u blame that on recruiting. and not a boys soccer player that transferred up here. but of course, since he wasn't a stud nobody has any problem with that. get off your recruiting rocker and find a better argument than that.

Buzz Ferrell why are you trashing the school your daughter goes to and the coach she plays for... I was at the all-region soccer meeting and your daughters coach fought like a madman to get her on the all-state team and he was very upset about her not getting first team; Maybe you should stop crying foul all of the time and appreciate having a coach that cares... There are enough teams out there that do not have coaches that care about their players - you are lucky your daughter plays for one that does

GET A CLUE SPS and join the rest of the town and show a little support for our on high school teams that is what you are for isn't? Sikeston parents are running out of patience.

I couldn't believe KFVS-TV Saturday night. They gave us three Illinois highschool football highlights. Then we got to see SIU at Missouri State highlights. The one highlight from the Missouri game was Missouri getting a punt blocked. They did show the score of the SEMO vs. MURRY STATE game. They failed to show any video from our home town team. I don't know why I expected anything else.

Any comments on the fence around the high school soccer field for the distict matches? For those who haven't seen it, its around the FIELD. The bleachers are now useless, and if you bring you lawn chair you'll be looking through a chain link fence. A non-soccer parent must have made that very bad decision. Pitty the kids in Sikeston whom the faculty and administration are ruining sports and fun in what used to be a great sports town. Let's hope they don't let Holifield go, he's all thats left.

I was at the Southeast/Samford game Saturday night, and the turnout was great. But I was extremely disappointed in two things: 1)It's great to play music to whip up the crowd between plays, but when the opposition goes up to the line, they should cut the music. SEMO consistently played the music at blaring levels until after the snap. That's terrible sportsmanship. 2)It's the job of the PA announcer to call out the ball carrier or receiver on a play, the tacklers, the gain, the down and yards to go, etc. It's not his job to be a cheerleader. When I heard comments like "Let's hear it for the Redhawks defense!" I felt a little insulted, as if I didn't have enough sense to know when to cheer without being told to. Give the fans a little more credit.

semosupporter - thx for the info, great to hear about them practicing full speed.

-- Posted by boomerang on Tue, Sep 19, 2006, at 8:43 AM

boomerang: If it would have been a game friday both Johnson and Paradoski would have played. I went to their practice Monday and both of them practiced at full speed. If anyone want's to attend their practices all you have to do is e-mail one of the coaches and they can let you know the times each week. They'll be going one more time this week. Wendsday at 4:00pm.

Since David Eckstein needs to go slow with his throwing, and since Aaron Miles has done a great job of filling in at short, I have a suggestion for TLR. Why not keep Miles at short (he makes the play in the hole better than Eckstein even when he was healthy) and play Eckstein at second? At least for the remainder of this season.

A Cardinal shortstop playing second in the post season wouldn't be without precedent. In '64, Dick Groat's backup at short, Dal Maxvill, filled in for the injured Julian Javier as the Cards beat the Yankees.

Whaddaya think?

For anyone at the Semo basketball workout (or anyone that knows)...what is wrong with Johnson and Paradoski? Johnson seemed to be injured in that he didn't participate much but had on practice gear. I only saw Paradoski sitting in the front row, couldn't tell if he was there as a fan or if he was injured, etc. I wasn't there for the whole workout so I may have missed something. Anyone know?

Has everyone by now gotten a copy of Gene Bess' book? Great read about the classiest guy in the business. I will read it over and over.

Anyone gooing to the Show Me Center on Friday to see the Workout of the Mens BB Team?? I will probably be there!!!

IPFW has released their schedule, and they have a game at Semo listed...

http://www.ipfw.edu/athletics/MBasketball/Mschedul...

Looks like that pretty well covers the non-conf games for the men

Mike Mitchell's response:
Southeast released their schedule today.

http://gosoutheast.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-r...

Here's the pdf file.

http://www.cstv.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/semo...

Men BBall

4 Road games (non-conf):

Purdue - Dec 30th

Arkansas

Iowa St

Evansville

2 Home games (non-conf):

UC-Riverside - Nov 24th

Bracket Buster - Feb 17th

20 conference games

1 Tournament in Alaska with 3 games (1st game will be against Drake)

29 games so far

That leaves 1 game not announced - my guess is that it will be a home game against a Div 2 team.

Arkansas, Evansville & Iowa St have all been mentioned in various media outlets, but none of those schools have posted their official schedule yet.

As far the women's team, Marty mentioned in his column that they are playing at Baylor (04-05 National Champion) and are playing Florida St in Cape. Pretty cool to get an ACC team to come to Cape.

I am also anxious to see the basketball schedules for the men and women. Any word?

Mike,

What is your take on pay sports new services like ESPN Insider? Are you a subscriber or do you get your information for free?

-- Posted by son_of_pat on Tue, Aug 1, 2006, at 12:21 PM
Mike Mitchell's response:
I'm not a subscriber. I believe ESPN has had a paid model for quite some time. There are a lot of sites out there that are hybrids - partially funded by ads, partially funded by subscription fees. Kind of like the cable TV model.

RCIR - a 3rd money game at Arkansas has been added. It was mentioned on a different board that it was the first game of the year.

Haven't heard anything about the women's schedule.

-- Posted by boomerang on Wed, Jul 19, 2006, at 9:19 AM

Anyone know when the SEMO Mens basketball schedule is going to be released?? Also, who else do we have non-conf other than the games listed???

Top of World (Drake, Then winner or loser of Utah State/Centenary and then one more)

Iowa State (A) (Money Game)

Purdue (A) (Money Game)

Evansville (A)

UC-Riverside (H)

Bracket Buster (H)

Also, who do the women have as money games??

Who is shaping up as the favorite to be the next Cape Central basketball coach?

-- Posted by Qman on Tue, Jul 18, 2006, at 2:13 PM

v - Semo had 2 transfers that sat out last year and will most likely start this year

- Brandon Foust (transfer from Oklahoma) will start at the 3 or 4 and will probably be the best player on the floor

- Mike Rembert (transfer from Bradley) will more than likely start at the 5

I think Hill's impact will be in 07-08, his Soph year, as he should get ample playing time by then. I think he'll be a solid contributor off the bench this season from everything I've heard.

Also, there is no guarantee that Paradoski will start with Roderick Pearson (from Raytown S) coming in. V - did you see Pearson at DJ's All-Star game a few weeks back? How did he look?

-- Posted by boomerang on Wed, Jul 5, 2006, at 9:13 AM

what do you think Johnny Hill's impact will be next season? I expect him to be the 6th man or maybe a starter next season if the team goes with 4 guards. I know for sure that Thornton, Johnson, Willoughby, and Paradowski will start. The competition for the final spots is probably between White and Maxwell if you go tradiitional or Burtin and Hill if you go small

-- Posted by vtime on Wed, Jul 5, 2006, at 8:09 AM

One would hope that the men's basketball teams at SEMO and SIU are having similar seasons so that ESPN may put the two teams up against each other in the annual Bracketbuster game thus renewing the cross-river rivalry.

I'd love to see more in-state rivalries. Shouldn't take legislation though. A tournament once yearly would do the trick in basketball.

In-state teams must compete if bill passes

http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A...

James Goodwin

News-Leader

JEFFERSON CITY -- Missouri State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia would have to battle it out on the hardwood and in other sports venues if a legislative bill filed this week wins approval.

Few think it has a shot, but Springfield Rep. Mark Wright is sponsoring legislation that would require all of Missouri's NCAA Division I universities to compete against each other athletically.

Some of the institutions already do, but Wright's bill would require them to compete -- and in every Division I sport they share.

"The in-state (and) cross-town rivalries are what makes sports what it is, so let's get it going," the Republican said.

University officials say such a requirement would greatly restrict their non-conference schedules and could hurt teams' standings because of the way basketball is ranked.

Wright's proposal "would not be practical" for basketball, said MSU Athletic Director Bill Rowe: "You only get to play nine non-league games."

The state has three other institutions that also play Division I basketball: MU-Kansas City, Southeast Missouri State University and a private institution, St. Louis University.

"I don't think that would be very realistic for any of us to play all four of the other teams," Rowe said.

The legislation would first affect games during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Here's some more Missouri vs. neighboring states stuff. According to rivals.com, 32 Missouri seniors have received football scholarship offers to D1 schools. Not an outstanding year, but better than many of our border states. Here's the list, starting with Arkansas and moving counter-clockwise: Arkansas--20, Tennessee--30, Kentucky--24, Illinois--65, Iowa--10, Nebraska--10, Kansas--6, Oklahoma--36. (I imagine the list will change a little. Some of the players receiving offers might not end up with scholarships, and some of the players not on the list could have offers extended late.)

Here's how it looks on a per capita basis, starting with the highest ratio: Oklahoma--10.1 scholarship offers per million residents, Arkansas--7.2 per million, Kentucky--5.8, Nebraska--5.7, Missouri--5.5, Illinois--5.1, Tennessee--5.0, Iowa--3.4, Kansas--2.2. (Using the number of senior males in the state to calculate the per capita number would have perhaps made more sense, but it wouldn't have changed things.)

Of course, one year doesn't prove anything, but that's quite a showing by Oklahoma.

In Missouri, 4 of the players were from outstate schools, 8 were from the Kansas City area (Harrisonville included), and 20 were from the St. Louis area (all from the City, St. Louis County, or St. Charles County).

What does it take for Coach Garner, Eric Shawn and Marty Mishow to realize that the problem with SEMO's shooting average being 40% or less is Ray Booker. He is taking 30% of the total team shots and he is shooting only 35%. Not only is he taking too many shots but the rest of the team is kept from developing any consistancy with Booker's control of the offense action.

If SEMO is going to contend in the OVC, Coach Garner better change his game plan to spread the ball around instead of focusing on Booker.

JEREMY JOFFRAY is incorrect. The Charleston Bluejays did NOT lose in the quarterfinals last year. The Jays lost to Luthern North in the finals of the 3A tournament. Looking forward to watching a Charleston Bell City final.

INFO ON CARDINALS PROSPECTS

Although this is overall a less-than-stellar group, it is a better collection than we've had the last few years.

St. Louis Cardinals Organizational Grades: Hitting (D+)…..Pitching (C)…..Top-end talent (C+)…..Overall (C-)

1. Anthony Reyes RHP…..24…..2003 (15) USC

Strengths: Plus 77-81 MPH curveball, 87-93 MPH two-seam fastball, and 72-75 MPH change-up. Pitchability. Plus command. Repeats delivery

Weaknesses: Stamina (elbow/shoulder)

Comments: Has dominated since inception into professional baseball with a plus curveball and sinker that rarely peaks above belt. Pitches aggressively and knows how to use repertoire. Minor injuries (sprained shoulder in 2005) have plagued him almost every season, so will need monitored. Opens 2006 season as fifth starter.

2006 MLB Role: Fifth starter

Potential: Number two starter

2. Colby Rasmus OF…..L/L…..19…..2005 (1-C) high school (AL)

Strengths: Athleticism/speed. Plus bat speed/power to all fields/BA ability. Arm strength. Range

Weaknesses: Strike zone judgment

Comments: Prototypical rightfielder, with excellent bat speed and power to all fields. Covers plate well and makes contact, so should hit for BA, though will need to tighten strike zone. Runs bases well with above average speed and has the range and arm strength to be an above average outfielder.

MLB Debut: 2009

Potential: Starting RF

3. Tyler Greene SS…..R/R…..22…..2005 (1) Georgia Tech

Strengths: Athleticism/speed (4.2). Average bat speed/moderate power. Arm strength. Range. Soft hands. Aggressiveness

Weaknesses: Contact/BA ability. Pull-conscious. Plate discipline

Comments: Inside-out swing gives hit moderate power to opposite field, though a lack of plate discipline, reluctance to use whole field, and contact ability will cost him in BA. Solid runner underway and will steal a base in right situation. Steady defender at SS, with his bat determining what role he has in Majors.

MLB Debut: 2008

Potential: Starting SS

4. Chris Lambert RHP…..22…..2004 (1) Boston College

Strengths: 86-94 MPH two and four-seam fastballs, 76-80 MPH slider, and 75-79 MPH change-up. Compact delivery. Aggressiveness

Weaknesses: Average arm action. Repeating ¾ arm slot. Overall command. Slow to plate (1.6)

Comments: Lost movement to fastball and strikeout rate plummeted. Pitches backwards, using slider to set-up fastball, and started dropping change-up on LH batters. Walks too many hitters and is slow to the plate, giving him trouble at holding runners. Move to bullpen might improve fastball velocity/movement.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Number three starter/setup reliever

5. Adam Wainwright RHP…..24…..2000 (1) high school (GA) by Atlanta

Strengths: 87-92 MPH fastball, 74-75 MPH curveball, and 80-81 MPH change-up. Command. Athleticism. Fluid, overhand delivery

Weaknesses: Pitching inside. Repeating delivery. Stamina

Comments: Tall with downward plane to plate, enhancing look of pitches. Pitched more to contact and became more efficient, though experienced a drop in strikeouts. Increase in velocity that was projected of him hasn't materialized, but has all pitches in average range. IP were a career high, though he tired late in season.

2006 MLB Role: Fifth starter/middle reliever

Potential: Number four starter

6. Mark McCormick RHP…..22…..2005 (1-S) Baylor

Strengths: 90-97 MPH four-seam fastball and 77-81 MPH curveball. High ¾ slot. Athletic/projectable frame

Weaknesses: Rotation of 81-84 MPH slider. Deception of 80-81 MPH circle-change. Command. Efficiency. Setting-up pitches

Comments: Exceptional movement to fastball and high ¾ slot provides downward plane for curveball, but struggles to throw strikes. Doesn't trust slider and circle-change, and will revert to fastball when in trouble. Mechanics get fouled-up easily and tends to throw across body.

MLB Debut: 2008

Potential: Number three starter/closer

7. Jose Martinez 2B/SS…..R/R…..18…..2004 FA (Venezuela)

Strengths: Athleticism/speed. Bat speed/contact ability. Plate discipline. Arm strength. Soft hands. Range

Weaknesses: Hitting for power. Base stealing proficiency. Need to add strength

Comments: Ability to hit for BA was no fluke and supplemented offense by adding power. Plate discipline is outstanding for experience level, ensuring solid OBP. Experience should make him better baserunner adding to his good speed. Raw defensively, but has the tools to be above average 2B.

MLB Debut: 2009

Potential: Starting 2B

8. Cody Haerther OF…..L/R…..22…..2002 (6) high school (CA)

Strengths: Bat speed/contact ability/moderate power. Average arm strength

Weaknesses: Strike zone judgment. Average speed. Range

Comments: Confident approach paid dividends, improving contact rate and ability to drive baseball. Inside-out swing suppresses HR production, but can hit gaps with regularity. Drop in batting eye in Double-A is somewhat concerning. Adjustment to outfield has been slow, needing to get better jumps and take proper routes.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Multi-position reserve (OF/1B/3B)

9. Nick Webber RHP…..21…..2005 (2) Central Missouri State

Strengths: 89-94 MPH two-seam fastball and slider. Command. Arm strength. Tall/projectable frame. Durability

Weaknesses: Deception of change-up. Setting-up pitches

Comments: Fastball that explodes low in strike zone and can put hitters away with slider that he throws off the plate. Showed impressive command, ability to induce groundballs, and aggressively comes after hitters. Resilient arm that is able to come-back on successive days and only needs to set-up pitches and develop change-up.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Setup reliever/closer

10. Blake Hawksworth RHP…..23…..2001 (28) high school (WA)

Strengths: Plus change-up and 90-94 MPH four-seam fastball. Plus command. Arm strength/action. Projectable frame

Weaknesses: Rotation of curveball. Setting up pitches

Comments: Labrum surgery cost him most of last two seasons and struggled upon return in August. Projectable pitcher with movement to fastball, a plus change-up, and plus command, adept at getting strikeout and groundball out. Repeats arm speed well and arm action is fluid, making injury problems a mystery.

MLB Debut: 2008

Potential: Number three starter

11. Nick Stavinoha OF…..R/R…..23…..2005 (7) Louisiana State

Strengths: Bat speed/power/BA ability. Strike zone judgment. Arm strength

Weaknesses: Speed. Range

Comments: Advanced hitter whom STL challenged with full-season league. Strong build with power to all fields and strike zone judgment, positively affecting BA. Knack for driving-in runs due to good situational hitting. Arm enough for RF, but range will be limited.

MLB Debut: 2008

Potential: Platoon outfielder

12. Stuart Pomeranz RHP…..21…..2003 (2) high school (TN)

Strengths: 88-92 MPH two-seam fastball and knuckle-curve. Command. Deceptive, low ¾ slot. Power-pitcher build

Weaknesses: Deception of change-up. Repeating arm speed. Arm action

Comments: Tall/wide-hipped pitcher, but doesn't pitch to height with low arm angle. Sinker and knuckle-curve are best pitches and throws strikes, but strikeout rate dropped drastically. Very efficient with pitches and gets groundball out, but needs to change speeds better and improve command within strike zone.

MLB Debut: 2008

Potential: Number four starter

13. Brendan Ryan SS…..R/R.....24.....2003 (7) Lewis-Clark State

Strengths: Athleticism/speed. Bat speed/contact ability. Pitch recognition. Arm strength. Soft hands

Weaknesses: Hitting for power. Defensive consistency

Comments: STL needed to push him based on age and held his own with mid-season promotion to Double-A. Athletic player with solid bat speed, contact ability, and plate discipline, which allows him to hit for consistent BA. Lack of strength will lower power production. Inconsistent defense may push him to utility role.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Utility infielder

14. Travis Hanson 3B…..L/R…..25.....2002 (9) Portland

Strengths: Moderate power. Arm strength. Soft hands. First-step quickness

Weaknesses: Contact/BA ability. Plate discipline. Speed (4.4)

Comments: Power and BA are beginning to show signs of life, but has taken time to advance through minors. Bat speed is average at best and lacks plate discipline, projecting to below average bat for corner player. Excellent defense at 3B, with plenty of arm strength and range.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Utility infielder

15. Eric Haberer LHP…..23…..2004 (3) Southern Illinois

Strengths: 87-92 MPH two-seam fastball, cut-fastball, and circle-change. Command. Deceptive, ¾ slot. Keeping ball down. Power-pitcher build. Aggressiveness

Weaknesses: Rotation of curveball. Arm action. Strikeout rate

Comments: Able to keep ERA down despite low strikeout rate, but command is impeccable, hides baseball, and is stingy with long-ball (two HR in 150 IP). Mixes four pitches, trading slider for cutter, and gets movement to fastball. Physically, he doesn't project more velocity, so must continue to out-think hitters.

MLB Debut: 2007

Potential: Number four starter

I belive SEMO has once again messed up in the football coaching field! Why keep two coaches on the staff from the past year when you are trying to hire a new coach? That does nothing but turn away top coaches for the job because they can't bring their staff. Look at the coaches they are interviewing and the coaches that were intersested in the job. It is sad when you can't bring in a coach who went to the playoffs (Jay Thomas-Nicholls State) or Todd Berry( Former Army Head Coach)instead settle for DII coaches...onec again SEMO athletics disapointes..how do you expect to win with unexperienced coaches...sad..we not only need a new football coachm but a new AD SOON..plase bring in a D-1AA coach such as Thomas who has had succes or someone like Berry, who has been a big time head coach...help the program, not start from scratch

Mike, what's your call about Mike Martz? Want him back or is it time to move on?

-- Posted by Legend on Wed, Nov 30, 2005, at 9:37 PM
Mike Mitchell's response:
I think the decision has been made - he won't be back.

I would say it's time for Martz to move on, though. It's not that everything going on there is his fault - it's not. There's so much bitterness and backstabbing going on in that front office right now - it's an incredibly toxic and destructive environment.

So it's not just the coach - it's the front office as well. The president of the team can't even be bothered to live in St. Louis - he conducts his business from LA. But the Rams have steadily regressed since their Super Bowl years and their talent evaluation process has been terrible - too many high round draft picks not contributing or playing up to par. It's time for some new blood.
