SEMO falls short at Ball State 27-10
Posted Thursday, September 2, at 9:19 PM
SEMO gave a strong effort but host Ball State took control in the second half to beat the Redhawks 27-10 in the season opener for both teams.
A 17-0 third-quarter advantage -- 10 of the points were set up by a fumble and blocked punt -- turned the tide for Ball State, which pulled away from a 7-7 halftime tie. I've got to get working on my stories from the game in Muncie, Ind., but I thought SEMO gave a good account of itself. I'm not sure what it will mean for the rest of the season because I don't know how good Ball State is. At least by playing a Mid-American Conference team that went 2-10 last year, instead of a BCS conference power, the Redhawks were able to be much more competitive in their money game, which I expected going in.
Don't expect Ball State to take SEMO lightly Even though Ball State will be favored to roll over SEMO in Thursday's football season opener in Muncie, Ind., don't expect the Cardinals to take the Redhawks lightly. Not after Ball State went 2-10 last year, including an an 0-7 start that featured a week two home loss to Division I-AA New Hampshire...
Lucas Nutt receives SEMO's final scholarship It doesn't affect the roster any, but SEMO basketball coach Dickey Nutt said on Erik Sean's radio show that he has decided to give his son -- redshirt freshman point guard Lucas Nutt -- the Redhawks' final available scholarship for this year. SEMO still had one scholarship after failing to land former Tennessee player Josh Tabb, who was denied a final year of eligibility by the NCAA...
Tabb not coming to SEMO Josh Tabb, the former University of Tennessee men's basketball player, won't be coming to SEMO after all as the NCAA has denied him a final year of eligibility. That leaves SEMO with 11 scholarship players -- including Missouri transfer Tyler Stone, who will definitely have to sit out the season, and Missouri State transfer Michael Porter, who will probably have to sit out -- one under the maximum they are allowed to have for this year...
SEMO releases basketball schedules SEMO released its men's and women's basketball schedules today. Tough nonconference schedules for both teams. The complete schedules, which are on SEMO's athletic department web site, will be in Wednesday's paper. By the way, SEMO is still awaiting word on the Josh Tabb situation...
Time change for SEMO football scrimmage The SEMO football team has changed the time for Saturday's final scrimmage of fall camp.
SEMO will hold the scrimmage at 6 p.m. at Houck Stadium instead of the originally scheduled 1 p.m.
The public is invited to attend.
Michael Porter coming to SEMO SEMO basketball fans and other hoops fans in this area who were hoping that Michael Porter was going to play for the Redhawks will now get their wish. Several reliable sources have told me that the former Sikeston High School standout is transferring from Missouri State to SEMO...
New scoreboard coming to Houck Stadium SEMO football fans tired of and embarrassed by the tiny, junior-high caliber scoreboard at Houck Stadium will have relief some time this season. But not by the Sept. 25 home opener against Tennessee Tech. That's the word from SEMO athletic director John Shafer, who told me the university has purchased an impressive new scoreboard for this season but it almost certainly won't be in place by Sept. 25...
OVC football poll has SEMO tied for seventh The SEMO football team has been picked tied for seventh in the OVC preseason football poll released today. SEMO and Austin Peay deadlocked for seventh in voting by the league's coaches and sports information directors. Jacksonville State is the preseason favorite to win the nine-team conference, followed by defending champion Eastern Illinois and Eastern Kentucky...
SEMO gymnasts second in national academics The three-year reign as academic national champions for the SEMO women's gymnastics team is over. But not because the Redhawks faltered in the classroom. SEMO compiled its second-highest grade point average in program history, 3.8905, for the 2009-10 school year...
A couple of SEMO football notes Although there always is a chance of roster additions before practice begins early next month, the current SEMO football roster lists one new Division I-A transfer for this year. That player, Joe Vucic, looks like the favorite to take over as the Redhawks' kicker and punter...
SEMO basketball players in town SEMO men's basketball coach Dickey Nutt told me some interesting news the other day that he was really happy about. All of SEMO's players -- the returnees and incoming recruits -- are in town attending a session of summer school. That hasn't often been the case in the past because the university was not willing to put the players on scholarship during the summer, meaning they would have had to pay their own way until the fall semester started...
Klocke drafted by Phillies in 31st round SEMO All-American catcher Jim Klocke was selected today by the Phillies in the 31st round of the 50-round major league baseball draft. Klocke said he was told he would be leaving in about a week to join one of the Phillies minor league teams, either their Rookie League squad in Florida or their short season Class A club in Williamsport, Pa...
Klocke not among 12 OVC players drafted in top 30 rounds The OVC had a strong showing today with 12 players selected on day two of the 2010 major league baseball draft, but SEMO All-American catcher Jim Klocke was not among them. Rounds 2 through 30 were held today, after the first round and supplemental rounds yesterday...
SEMO baseball ends season with 0-2 tournament The SEMO baseball team went two and out in the OVC tournament for the second straight year after today's 13-9, 10-inning loss to Murray State. Both SEMO's losses in the tournament, being played in Jackson, Tenn., were in 10 innings. SEMO finished the season with a 30-25 record...
SEMO baseball loses tournament opener The SEMO baseball team has fallen into the losers bracket of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament after just one game for the second straight year. Fourth-seeded SEMO led 5-1 after six innings Wednesday but couldn't hold on as fifth-seeded Eastern Illinois tied it with four in the top of the seventh and then scored five in the 10th to prevail 10-5 in Jackson, Tenn...
SEMO baseball finishes fourth in OVC The SEMO baseball squad wound up fourth in the nine-team OVC and will play at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the OVC Tournament in Jackson, Tenn. SEMO will have a rematch with fifth-seeded Eastern Illinois, which took two of three from the Redhawks during a series in Charleston, Ill., Friday and today that ended the regular season...
Press release about SEMO basketball players leaving SEMO finally put out an official press release regarding several men's basketball players with eligibility remaining who will not be returning to the program, something I wrote about several weeks ago. As I wrote a while back, the group consists of junior forward Jajuan Maxwell, junior guard Sam Pearson, junior forward Eric McCrary and freshman guard LaQuentin Miles...
Edgar gets job at Oklahoma juco Former SEMO men's basketball coach Scott Edgar is back in the coaching profession. Edgar, whose two-year tenure at SEMO ended with his firing late in 2008 amid allegations of NCAA rules violations, recently was hired as coach at Eastern Oklahoma State Junior College...
SEMO baseball having big season While most of the talk on these blogs centers around SEMO football and basketball, the SEMO baseball team is having quite a season during a year when the Redhawks were predicted to finish toward the bottom of the OVC. Entering this weekend's three-game home series against Murray State, the Redhawks are 26-15 overall and a first-place 10-4 in the OVC. They lead the league by two games over Jacksonville State...
