Yet another blow for SEMO basketball
Posted Friday, October 3, at 10:01 AM
How much more can go wrong for the SEMO men's basketball program?
The latest bad news is that Mark Caviness -- arguably SEMO's co-top signee for the 2008-09 season-- did not meet NCAA eligibility requirements and will not play for the Redhawks this year. Caviness, a junior college transfer, was admitted to SEMO and has been attending classes since school began in late August. Caviness, a 6-foot-5 forward, was an all-conference performer at Indian River Community College in Florida. SEMO coach Scott Edgar said Caviness will continue to attend SEMO, although he will have to pay his own way and will not be allowed to practice with the team. As long as Caviness meets future NCAA eligibility requirements, he will still have two seasons of eligibility remaining. Caviness and Martino Brock were regarded as SEMO's co-top signeees for this season. Brock, a 6-5 swingman who would have been a freshman, was never admitted to SEMO after failing to meet eligibility requirements. Two of the Redhawks' key players from last season transferred, starting point guard Roderick Pearson to Oral Roberts and 6-foot-10 center Will Bogan to Shawnee (Ill.) Community College. In addition, point guard Hank Harris -- the probable starter following Pearson's departure -- suffered an achilles tendon injury during a pickup game and will likely miss the entire season. SEMO is down to 11 scholarship players, including Harris. And all of the above is in addition to the program being under NCAA investigation, with alleged rules violations expected to be announced soon. Ouch!
By the way, for anybody who read my story on Caviness being ineligible in the print edition of the Missourian, you might have noticed one screw-up I made (nothing new in that regard). I wrote that Pearson transferred to Wichita State, when he actually is now at Oral Roberts. The only thing I can think of is I had Wichita State on the brain because at one time Pearson was said to be considering that program. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Holloman will start against Jacksonville State SEMO senior tailback Timmy Holloman apparently will be thrown right back into the fire. Coach Tony Samuel said during his weekly media briefing Monday that Holloman will start Saturday when the Redhawks play at nationally ranked Jacksonville State, the OVC preseason favorite...
JSU-EIU overshadows SEMO-ISU SEMO at Indiana State isn't exactly a marquee matchup on Saturday's Division I-AA college football schedule. The Redhawks are 1-3 and haven't had a winning season since 2004. The Sycamores are 0-3, haven't had a winning season since 1996 and own the nation's longest Division I-AA losing streak of 17 straight defeats...
Familiar result for SEMO football It seems like no matter what type of game the SEMO football team plays, the Redhawks can't get over the hump. But that's basically been the story of the program since it moved up to the Division I-AA level in 1991. Take Saturday's home game against Missouri State for instance...
Should Lillard be allowed to start -- or even play -- Saturday? I just received an anonymous telephone call from a woman who claimed to be speaking for a group of SEMO football supporters. The woman told me that the group she was speaking for -- and I'm paraphrasing here -- was highly disappointed about SEMO coach Tony Samuel's plans to start quarterback Houston Lillard against Missouri State Saturday night...
Losing OVC opener doesn't bode well for SEMO SEMO didn't play a bad game Thursday night against Tennessee Tech in its OVC football opener. It's just that the talent level for the Redhawks doesn't appear good enough even by OVC standards to allow the team much margin for error. The Redhawks did not turn the ball over while forcing three turnovers, yet still lost 29-27 at Houck Stadium...
SEMO didn't look all that bad at Mizzou SEMO's football game at Missouri Saturday night went pretty much the way I expected. The Tigers built a huge first-half lead -- 42-0 -- then cleared their bench and basically put things on cruise control during the second half to win 52-3. Despite the lopsided final score and the lopsided yardage total -- MU outgained SEMO 592 to 334 -- I actually thought the Redhawks played a pretty decent game overall...
Hayti's Moore might not play against SEMO It looks like Hayti native William Moore, Missouri's All-American senior safety, probably won't play Saturday night when the Tigers host SEMO. But MU sophomore All-American return man/wide receiver Jeremy Maclin likely will see the field. That's all according to Dave Matter, who covers the Tigers for the Columbia Tribune...
Buffalo Wild Wings to show SEMO-Mizzou People who don't want to shell out $29.95 to watch Saturday night's SEMO at Missouri football game via pay-per-view have another option. Buffalo Wild Wings, one of the best places in Cape to watch a sporting event, will pick up the broadcast. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m...
Opener not encouraging -- but remember 2002 Probably about the only good thing you can say about SEMO's season-opening football game against Southwest Baptist Thursday night is that the Redhawks won. But if you're a SEMO fan looking for positive signs that this might finally be the year the Redhawks break through, you probably didn't see any...
