WNIT, baseball highlight SEMO sports

It's been pretty slow on the SEMO sports beat, especially since the two sports that people on this site seem to have the most interest in -- men's basketball and football -- are currently not in season.
But there is still plenty going on with the Redhawks, including tonight's WNIT game at Evansville and the beginning of the OVC baseball schedule. The women's basketball game against Evansville looks like a fairly even matchup between the 23-8 Redhawks and the 20-11 Purple Aces. While SEMO won the OVC regular-season title, Evansville captured a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season crown. Both teams lost in the semifinals of their conference tournaments. I could see this one going either way. It's certainly a game the Redhawks can win, which would mark their first postseason victory as a Division I program. As for baseball, SEMO opens its conference schedule with a three-game series against Tennessee Tech at Capaha Field. There will be a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday and a 1 p.m. contest Saturday (the series was moved up a day due to Easter). The baseball Redhawks, with plenty of newcomers as key players, are definitely not yet a finished product. But from what I've seen they have a chance to be pretty good, especially since it looks like they've got three fairly solid starting pitchers for OVC games, although the bullpen remains a major question mark. After all this rain, it will be nice to watch some baseball in Cape Girardeau. |
