Will Samuel's third season be the charm?Posted Saturday, August 23, 2008, at 5:15 PM
There are exceptions, but most times when a coach takes over a struggling college football program, the first couple of years are rough.
But by year three, when the majority of the players are ones recruited by that coach and his staff -- and those players become more and more comfortable with the system -- significant progress is often made. SEMO coach Tony Samuel hopes his Redhawks take a major step upward this season, after his first two SEMO teams produced records of 7-15 overall and 3-12 in the OVC. Samuel recently told me with conviction he believes that will be the case. I really like Samuel and his staff personally, and their football experience -- both where they have played and where they have coached -- is highly impressive. I think they know what they're doing. I just wonder if SEMO football is such a black hole that nobody will be able to dig the Redhawks out of the mess, at least not on a consistent basis. In 17 seasons on the Division I-AA level, SEMO is a collective 65-125, which spans three coaches. The program has gone 44-82 in the OVC. SEMO has produced just two winning records in I-AA: 8-4 in 2002 and 7-5 in 1994. Will Samuel be able to buck that trend? I personally don't expect much from the Redhawks this year -- again -- since it's basically the same group of players that went 3-8 overall and 1-6 in the OVC last season. That's pretty much all I have to go on. But the Redhawks do have a lot of key seniors and plenty of experience this year, which they didn't have last season. A former area high school coach I respect a great deal told me during Friday's SEMO scrimmage that he believes the extra year of experience and physical maturity can make a big difference. And here's something to ponder: Tim Billings, the SEMO coach immediately prior to Samuel, went 7-15 overall and 2-11 in the OVC during his first two seasons -- almost identical to what Samuel has done. So most fans also didn't expect much out of Billings third SEMO squad -- but that 2002 unit went 8-4 (4-2 in the OVC) for the program's winningest season since 1969. And the 2003 SEMO team, while only 5-7 overall because of a brutal nonconference schedule, went 5-3 in the OVC and needed only a victory in the season finale to win the conference title and earn the program's first playoff berth on any level (the squad fell short). Of course, the bottom fell out for Billings after that, which is what brought Samuel to Cape Girardeau. So what do you think, will Samuel's third season be the charm?
Here are few notable rules changes to be aware of as the college football season approaches: -- The NCAA has banned the horse-collar tackle. A 15-yard penalty will be assessed when a runner is yanked to the ground from the inside collar of his shoulder pads or jersey. This does not apply to a runner who is inside the tackle box or to a quarterback who is in the pocket. -- There is no longer a five-yard facemask penalty, which had been assessed when a player grabbed an opponent's facemask without pulling, twisting or turning. There is now only a 15-yard facemask penalty for pulling, twisting or turning. -- There is now a 40-second play clock that will start as soon as the ball is ruled dead, instead of the previous 25-second clock that began only on the referee's signal. The 25-second clock will remain in circumstances when the officials stop the game clock for administrative and other reasons. -- When a runner has gone out of bounds, the game clock will now start on the referee's signal when the ball is ready for play, not when the ball is snapped. But in the last two minutes of each half, the clock will continue to start only when the ball is snapped, thus allowing the offensive team to maximize the clock. I would say between 3 and 5 wins. I think 5 is the ceiling. SW Baptist, Tech, Ind State, AP and Murray.
5 would be more than the men's basketball team will win against D1 competition, so I guess that would be a good thing.
Not a lot of faith in the upcoming Mens BB Season huh, hoopsguru????
It will be close between fb overall wins, and bb DI wins; slight edge to bb.
Too many uncertainties for the BB Hawks. I just checked the roster to see who came back and who is gone. We really need a point guard that can shoot (Remember Roberts and Paradowski?), but I think Hank can out penetrate either one of them. Cal Williams needs to be more consistant, but not having Rembert and Will the Thrill in his way should give him more rebounds and points. Herring can be quite exciting, but he was one that was rumored to be gone. Is Brock in school and will he be eligible? I don't know much about the newcomers but I think three of them are DII JUCO's. The 6-8 (possibly 6-6 per other reports) kid from Louisiana is supposed to be a great 3 Point shooter but I don't see much help from him inside. Scott Edgar from Eagle Ridge? Don't think I have heard much about him.
Marty: I suppose you need to start thread about SEMO men's basketball for fans to talk about SEMO football. This is ridiculous guys. Let's stick to the topic - SEMO football. Let's not throw in the towell just yet. At least wait a few games before you start bashing anyone. For all we know, Samuel may very well have a decent team this year. If not, then so be it and nothing has changed. If we do get to 5 wins, I'd say that's SOME improvement.
Wow! Being an outsider, there does not look like there is much fan support. It's a football blog and football season and you all want to talk B-ball. No wonder things have not turned the corner for football yet! I can remember when Missouri was in the same boat not to long ago after Dan Devine days until Pinkel arrived. One thing that did remain constant was the support locally for the team in the mid-Missour area. It's amazing to me how little support this team (SEMO) gets locally and coverage in the paper about the upcoming game. It's the major team in the city and you can not find much about the upcoming game this week.
Why would a coach or player want to stay at SEMO when there is little fan support. This is just my opinion just being new to following sports in this area.
For what it's worth, Have the money game opponents been determined going forward after next year? I believe 2009 the opponent is Cincinnati again right?
I don't know about lack of fan support. SEMO fb games usually avg about 8-9k plus no matter what their record is. If they are good, they will pull in 10k. There will probably be a good 8-9k there again on Thursday.
I seriously doubt that SEMO football averages 8,000 per game. Maybe 5,000 per game, and that's probably being generous.
This Thursday night, we'll be lucky if we get 6,000. It's a weeknight...we're playing a low D-2 team...and we're coming off a horrible season.
Now I'll give you the Homecoming and Family Weekend crowds are normally around 8,000-9,000....and could be more if we're playing good. If we host SIU, we'd probably get 10,000 people, but 5,000 would be Saluki fans.
I'm not sure what stadium you guys were sitting in last year, but 6000-8000? Come on now. Regardless of the ANNOUNCED attendance, anyone sitting there could see there were about 2000-3000 fans. A pity, but a fact. Another fact, there was not enough time (with the rainout)at last week's scrimmage to determine anything with any certainty. Can't wait til Thursday night!
SEMO's reported avg. attendance last season was 6,215 avg for 6 home games; in 2006 it was 8,018; 2005 it was 6,577. People come out to support SE football.
I listened to Coach Samuel's press conference today on the athletic site and he mentioned something about the new comers to the team that have been impressive. Is it true that the freshman quarterback from Washington, MO is ahead of the junior transfer? The depth chart has at least 5 freshman at 2 deep.
It also looks like receiver could be a position that is deep on the team.
semoredhawk, in the words of the immortal Marty Mishow, I don't know what you are drinking or smoking, but I want some! Like I said, regardless of the "announced" attendance....
SB, there are more people that come to fb then go to bb games.
There are more people who come to fb games than bb games? What is your point? I contest the so-called 6000-8000 attendance at fb games. This Thursday it was announced at just under 5000. That HAS to be tickets sold, not actual bodies in the stadium.
Attendance was listed at 5475 in the box score. No back to SaviorBreaths' point; is that actual tickets sold or bodies in the stadium???
The Ron Hines giger counter includes bodies: fans, players, coaches, refs, administrators, band members, bus drivers, soda stand workers, ticket takers, security, light bulbs in the light standards, radio announcers, cars in the infield, and sports writers (who get counted as 3/5 - because they usually don't bring their brains to the game).
Oh well, this is getting us nowhere, but I really take exception to your sports writers comment, iffy. That is wrong, inaccurate, erroneous, false, misleading, and unreliable! Mishow always does a great job! And ask him how many were in the stands, semoredhawk. He'll give you a more accurate number of actual fans in the stands, which is all that really counts, if you think about it.
