SEMO didn't look all that bad at Mizzou

SEMO's football game at Missouri Saturday night went pretty much the way I expected.

The Tigers built a huge first-half lead -- 42-0 -- then cleared their bench and basically put things on cruise control during the second half to win 52-3.

Despite the lopsided final score and the lopsided yardage total -- MU outgained SEMO 592 to 334 -- I actually thought the Redhawks played a pretty decent game overall.

It was certainly a lot better performance than SEMO's shaky overtime win over Southwest Baptist in the season opener.

The Redhawks had a solid 199 yards of offense in the first half against MU's front-line defense and had four solid scoring chances, including two trips to the MU 11-yard line. But SEMO sputtered every time.

If you're a SEMO fan, you have to feel a lot better now than you did after the Southwest Baptist game.

I have no idea how SEMO will fare in the OVC, but they open with a very winnable game Thursday night at home against Tennessee Tech on ESPNU.

No game should ever be considered a must-win this early in the season, but I'd say the Redhawks need to beat Tech -- which has fared little better than SEMO in recent years -- if they have any hopes of putting together a solid record.

A couple of quick notes on Saturday's game:

One, I already knew this, but Chase Daniel is a heck of a quarterback.

Two, if you took SEMO plus 50 points -- the official betting line -- you came away a winner.

Semo not the only one ot play a division 2 opponent close...but this time the division 1-aa school came out on the wrong end.

True...but Washburn was in the pre-season D-2 Top 25. While MO. State plays in the always tough Gateway/MVC, they're just a so-so 1-AA team. Still, I'm sure the folks in Springfield aren't too happy with losing to a D-2 team.

I think you have to look at the teams. If you take D-2 Northwest Missouri State, they'd probably beat a few teams in the OVC. A GOOD D-2 team isn't all that different than a so-so 1-AA team. And the best 1-AA teams (App. State) can beat a handful of 1-A teams.

My point was considering the butt-whooping Missouri State gave us last year I gave us very little chance to win the game against them this year because I assumed they are that much better. With Missouri State losing to D2 Washburn, I might have to re-think my evaluation.

SEMO looked horrible!!! Not too bad???

The PD is even making fun of SEMO on the front page of stltoday.com:

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/...

I can answer their question of who is worse, the Rams or SEMO... it's easy.

SEMO is. End of story. The Rams have at least had success this decade. They've made it to two Super Bowls and to the playoffs a handful of times. What's SEMO done?

Routinely finish last or next to last in the worst conference of Division I-AA football in America. What a joke.

It's very embarassing to call myself a Southeast alum.

Washburn's Head Coach is Craig Schurig, one of the 3 finalists when Semo hired Coach Samuel.

Taking a step back for a second. How can anyone compare the Rams to SEMO fb? Now come on. The NFL is the parity league. There is no parity in college football, at least not between IA and IAA. Even with a Mizzou program that is a Johnny come lately to the party in terms of national competition. Mizzou and SEMO are not even on the same planet to speak of. The fact that the Rams are where they are has nothing to do with SEMO and where they are. In fact, I'd make the point that the Rams are in much worse shape then SEMO is, though SEMO is bad enough. The Rams shouldn't be beaten down by Philly like they were. SEMO got exactly what they should have by Mizzou.

SEMO Redhawks, you do realize that the PD stands for Post Disgrace, right. Which might describe you with that last post of yours.

I was pleasantly surprised by the way SEMO played Saturday night. I expected worse and didn't expect us to move the ball as well as we did. Instead we moved the ball extremely well and limited Mizzou to just one sack.

My only problem is that we needed to have scored more. When you are in the red zone 4 times you need to come out with more then just 3 points. But i'll chalk that up to the level of the opponent and that it is still early in the season.

Now that we are done with the money games we can actually see where this season is heading on Thursday night. I would say that a win against Tech is absoultely necessary.

I attended SEMO from 1968 to 1972 and was able to attend all home football and basketball games beginning in 1969. During this period of time the SEMO Football teams were either champion or co-champion in the conference. It was a lot of fun to see the "Indians on the Warpath" playing against schools of their own size vs. "Redhawks on Retreat" playing against large schools. The players are certainly caught in the middle and you can't point the finger at them.

The Post-Dispatch's coverage of everything is outstanding actually. They have Hall of Fame calibur columnists and cover a wide range of teams/sports. They cover SIU-C and SMS...err... "Missouri State" frequently. However it's sad that SEMO only gets mentioned when they are involved in violations or getting their a**es kicked. It's a shame.

This is going to be another 3 win season...(maybe)...don't kid yourselves. Take off the rose colored glasses.

I'll take off the rose colored glasses when this team plays a real game. You can't take too much from these money games one way or another. Against an opponent in our conference or at our level, D1AA, is where we will truely know where this team stands. If SEMO can't beat Tech at home on Thursday then there will truly be cause for concern.

As far as the PD goes I actually don't mine a guy like Jeff Gordon but Bernie Micklasz (I really don't care how he spells his name)drives me nuts. And there coverage of SEMO, a college which is just 2 hours south of them is truely pathetic.

So who is picking Semo to beat Tech, I am not.

It really is sicking to listen to some of these comments about how bad SEMO is! If you want to make it better, get behind it. Otherwise get out of the way. Why would any propective athlete want to come to SEMO with this kind of negativity. Go have a bake sale and give the money to athletics. Do something! Talk is cheap. Money solves everything, does it not!

-- Posted by Harley on Tue, Sep 9, 2008, at 4:06 PM

Thank you Harley. It is so sad to see so many negative people surrounding SEMO athletics. I mean hell I can see that athletics here at SEMO are not perfect but if you don't like something then do something about it. Don't just moan about it and turn your back on it.

My prediction for Thursday night is SEMO 34 Tech 31.

It is easy to say that money solves all issues. I'm not sure money is the answer to SE fb.

come on...you can't polish a you know what. chase daniel was gone with 8 minutes left in the second quarter with the score 42-0. he finished 16/17 with 3tds and around 250 yards passing. if he and the rest of the team would have stayed in the whole contest...they would have scored 100.

you can't look at anything about this game with Mizzou and determine any certainty about SEMO. I'll wait to comment again until after their game with TECH game but I don't see SEMO pulling this game out either...

Rumor has it that while Pinkel was conducting his coaches show the week leading up to the SEMO game, he told MIZZOU play by play guy Mike Kelley off the air that SEMO was the worst team he has ever seen on film...WORST EVER...

olbiadinthehouse,

Do you have a link or is that last paragraph just mindless dribble?

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Sep 11, 2008, at 10:09 AM

I work in the radio biz and one of our morning guys who intereviewed Mike Kelley was told that from one Mike Kelley...don't think he'd have any reason to fib about it...

-- Posted by olbiadinthehouse on Thu, Sep 11, 2008, at 11:01 AM

Pinkel was probably right.

Is the band there tonight? It sure seems quiet. Has the band ever watched a game on tv? When your team scores, it is probably a good idea to play as loud as you can, so it at least comes across on tv that there is some atmosphere at the stadium. It is so funny that you watch games at places like USC, Michigan, Tennessee..bigger schools, and the band is playing all game long.

You have to admit that SEMO is playing a decent game tonight. Go Hawks!
