JSU-EIU overshadows SEMO-ISU

SEMO at Indiana State isn't exactly a marquee matchup on Saturday's Division I-AA college football schedule.

The Redhawks are 1-3 and haven't had a winning season since 2004. The Sycamores are 0-3, haven't had a winning season since 1996 and own the nation's longest Division I-AA losing streak of 17 straight defeats.

But while SEMO closes out its nonconference slate with a game that won't raise many eyebrows, there will be a huge OVC matchup taking place in Charleston, Ill.

Eastern Illinois hosts Jacksonville State and heralded LSU transfer quarterback Ryan Perrilloux as those two touted squads kick off their OVC schedules with an early showdown.

The Panthers and Gamecocks have been among the OVC's premier teams in recent years. One will get an early leg up on a potential conference title while the other will face an uphill climb the rest of the way.

It has the makings of quite a game.

By the way, SEMO visits Jacksonville State next week as the Redhawks -- 0-1 in OVC play -- resume league action.

The latest addition to the SEMO men's basketball coaching staff certainly has plenty of experience.

Tommy Suitts, announced Wednesday by Scott Edgar to fill out his staff, has been a head coach at two Division I programs, Rice from 1981 to 1987 and Chicago State from 1987 to 1990.

Suitts, a 1969 graduate of Alabama -- where he played -- has been a high school coach since 1992.

Edgar said in a release from the university that he has known Suitts for close to 30 years and considers him a great friend.

Edgar said Suitts will work in all areas of the Redhawks' program, with a focus on administrative duties.

The schedule did not do Semo any favors. As is looks right now, when Semo gets back into conference play, they will be playing the top 3 teams in the league in some way, shape or form in JSU, EIU and TSU.

JSU just announced a massive stadium project, wich might lead to a move to IA.

JSU can go ahead and move to 1A, but that won't help SEMO out. We'll still be one of the worst teams in the FCS (1-AA).

We're probably the worst college football team at any level in the state of Missouri. Maybe we can schedule Lindenwood or Wash U. next year and see what happens.

Or maybe we can make the Illinois tour. We're already going to get knocked around at home by SIU. Why not play Quincy, Blackburn, and McKendree??

Isn't SW Baptist in the state of Missouri?

A little basketball news:

-- Marcus Rhodes is listed on the roster at D2 Mo Western

-- Portageville native Willie Hassell is no longer at Canisius

-- Murray St has lost starting PF Marvin Williams, he is no longer listed on their roster. WPSD said he just didn't want to play any more and left the team.

Well I don't care if we play Cape Central or Jackson, we're still bad.

I'd be willing to bet that some the BEST high school teams in the nation could be us...maybe some h.S. teams here in Missouri.

We're just that bad, due to lack of talent, lack of funding/facilities, poor coaching, and poor school administration.

It seems that the community wants this team to succeed and will show support IF we get things turned around. However, until that happens, don't expect huge crowds to show up at Houck Stadium. The general public has NO reason to open their check books for financial help. If the SEMO Administration doesn't show a commitment, then why should the community??

dude...someone at SEMO needs to give redhawks07 the President and AD job...he's the only one that readily admits that this team is awful and that the university wants nothing to do with them. I mean seriously, how long did the university argue with a local businessman just to get the River Campus built??? And eventually they got their way. That should tell you where their money and ideas go to...it certainly is not the football program. And if Shumate hadn't helped in getting the Show Me Center built...the basketball team would still be playing in Houck Field House...

Redhawk is exactly right...the university continues to solicit support from the community for their sports programs yet continues to deliver a supbar product to the community...that doesn't make sense. You have to field a winner some of the time...look what happened when the basketball team had two good years and made the dance. You had close to 7,000 people fill the Show Me Center on a Saturday afternoon for a televised game with Murry State. There was excitement and reason to show support. Who wants to support teams that aren't competitive?????? It's a no brainer.

You've got to hire the right people, be responsible with where the money is being spent, fund your most profitable programs, and so on.

The lack of direction by Dobbins and Kaverman make the school's sports programs a joke...

Do you realize our fans honk their horns when SEMO scores a TD???? That's what little league parents do when their sons hit a homerun...not what D-IAA fans should be doing at a game...like another blogger mentioned...the gap is not that great between SEMO football and high level high school football...pathetic.

This game Saturday will truly be an epic battle between 2 VERY, VERY bad teams, ISU is totally rebuilding. Most of the team is freshman/sophmores with a few upperclassmen. I watched SEMO play MSU the other week. It could actually be a good game between 2 bad teams, or just a bad game full of errors. We'll find out Saturday.

ISU has yet to score a TD this season, but the schedule has been difficult. We'll be happy if they score one TD against SEMO on Saturday. Both teams desperately need a win. The loser might not win another game the rest of the season. Don't expect a big crowd, ISU is hoping for 4000-5000 fans. We'll see. Usually it's been around 2000 fans or so if they're lucky. It's a new era with a coach from TH leading the team now, so there may be some curious fans there just wanting to see the new ISU.

it'll be an interesting game no doubt.

And other thing....you people can talk all day long about money and facilities. BUT, if UT-Martin football can be successful in that little po-dunk town with NOTHING to do and that's not even close to a somewhat-major city, we must really be screwing up somewhere.

UT-Martin has a piss-poor stadium with a decent locker room facility. I can't imagine any decent player wanting to much any amount of time in Martin, Tennessee.

It's not all money and facilities people. I'd bet we're in better shape than UT-Martin.

Now Tony Samuel may be a great guy and very organized, but he needs to do a much better job of recruiting. Billings put a handful of players in the NFL, but as a team, we had no discipline. He did have some talent here though.

I'm just saying the excuses of "money and facilities" can only go so far. Look at Murray State. They have plenty of money and much better facilities, but they're not much better than we are.
