Yet another blow for SEMO basketball

How much more can go wrong for the SEMO men's basketball program?

The latest bad news is that Mark Caviness -- arguably SEMO's co-top signee for the 2008-09 season-- did not meet NCAA eligibility requirements and will not play for the Redhawks this year.

Caviness, a junior college transfer, was admitted to SEMO and has been attending classes since school began in late August.

Caviness, a 6-foot-5 forward, was an all-conference performer at Indian River Community College in Florida.

SEMO coach Scott Edgar said Caviness will continue to attend SEMO, although he will have to pay his own way and will not be allowed to practice with the team.

As long as Caviness meets future NCAA eligibility requirements, he will still have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Caviness and Martino Brock were regarded as SEMO's co-top signeees for this season.

Brock, a 6-5 swingman who would have been a freshman, was never admitted to SEMO after failing to meet eligibility requirements.

Two of the Redhawks' key players from last season transferred, starting point guard Roderick Pearson to Oral Roberts and 6-foot-10 center Will Bogan to Shawnee (Ill.) Community College.

In addition, point guard Hank Harris -- the probable starter following Pearson's departure -- suffered an achilles tendon injury during a pickup game and will likely miss the entire season.

SEMO is down to 11 scholarship players, including Harris.

And all of the above is in addition to the program being under NCAA investigation, with alleged rules violations expected to be announced soon.

Ouch!

By the way, for anybody who read my story on Caviness being ineligible in the print edition of the Missourian, you might have noticed one screw-up I made (nothing new in that regard).

I wrote that Pearson transferred to Wichita State, when he actually is now at Oral Roberts.

The only thing I can think of is I had Wichita State on the brain because at one time Pearson was said to be considering that program.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

#3 was #1, I believe

Amazing that on one of the biggest news days in SE Sports History, that our great bloggers could only manage a retort on Three Rivers..lol!

1. Who was the women's player who received 7000$?

2. Who was the prospective BB player that took part in a pick up game observed by Edgar??

3. Who did Edgar give 239 dollars to?

4. Who did Edgar drive to Memphis?

Anyone have any ideas based on these vague wrong doings????

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, at 5:19 PM

There is no doubt in my mind that Edgar is done at Southeast. I mean, otherwise they would let him coach until the meeting and then release. I'm sure that there are dealings in the works to come to a mutual settlement much the same as BJ Smith. The university protected themselves by putting that major violation clause in their contracts.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, at 4:53 PM

So, a booster gave a women's player $7000? Seriously?? A women's basketball player?

Note to dirty boosters, for future reference --- If you are willing to give $7000 out to an athlete, please do so for a dominating 6'11 Post player, or a 6'4 mobile QB with a cannon arm that runs a 4.4 forty. Thanks in advance.

Here they are...

-- A fifth-year women's basketball student-athlete received more than $7,000 in course expenses from a representative of the university's athletic interests after the player's eligibility was complete;

--The men's coaches observed strength and conditioning workouts regularly during the summers of 2006 and 2007 and watched out-of-season pickup games in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007, including a prospective student-athlete participating in a pickup game during an official visit.

-- Edgar and an assistant coach arranged for extra benefits, specifically $239 in institutional fees for a student-athlete to allow his enrollment and driving a student-athlete to Memphis.

-- Edgar provided "false and misleading information" to Southeast and the NCAA regarding the men's basketball allegations.

--The university failed to monitor its men's and women's basketball programs.

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, at 4:17 PM

Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Edgar has been placed on administrative leave until the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions hears the case and releases their findings.

I predict the findings are released and then Edgar is fired. I believe Edgar has coached his final game at Semo. Is that to simple??

The allegations were outlined in a letter to Dobbins. WHEN WILL THE PUBLIC KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE ALLEGATIONS ARE?? YOU CAN'T HIDE THEM FOREVER DOBBINS….COWARD…

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, at 3:28 PM

FINALLY!!! This might be the BEST news in a long time. We can only assume this will lead to Edgar's end at SEMO as well. Same as in the BJ Smith situation.

"white haired former coach"....who the hell are you refering to?

Also, are we to assume that one of the assistant HC's are going to be promoted to be the head coach?

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, at 12:51 PM

Yea, Boomer probably.

I'm just wondering what a certain white haired former coach, is up to these days in the Lou, and wonder what it would take to get him to be the "acting" HC?

In a bad situation like this, we might as try to make it as positive as possible.

Is this one of those 'it will get worse before it gets better moments'?

Speechless, just speechless. Marty, can you just recirculate all the articles about the 1999-2000 team each day this season, it'll make it an exciting season for some of us. Please suit up Scott Edgar Jr. That'll make it fun as well. Even if they win 7 or more games, this has to be the worst D-1 team that SEMO has put out there since 1992. This line-up is awful. The 6-win team of Garner's was because they were all freshman and with no size, but they competed with Kevin Roberts, Derek Winans, Brett Hale, Tim Scheer, etc. And the 7-win team of Garner's had like 6 scholarship players, but they still had 22 point a game scorer Roy Booker, and once again, were competetive. This team doesn't appear to be competetive or fun. Wonder what former assistants Keno Davis, Chris Lowery, etc. are up to??? Oh yeah, WINNING!!!

Seems to be business as usual for SEMO basketball and football under Kaverman. Good thing he is on hos way out!

-- Posted by paulsatchel on Wed, Oct 8, 2008, at 10:43 AM

semosupporter: That is what you said. I was agreeing with you.

semoredhawk: Give Dobbins the credit for the 8-4 season in 2002. Who cares. It is 2008 now and we are probably on our way to a 3-9 record.

-- Posted by Counter Top on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 3:08 PM

myershall..in case you haven't noticed, on the "field" most of the other sports have not floundered.

The "floundering" programs at SE continue to be led by softball and football, with mbb gaining ground..everyone else is holding their own.

I'm not sure the "lord and savior" has as much daily responsibility as semo fans place on their president in regards to athletics.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 2:57 PM

So does Dobber get any credit for SEMO's 8-4 season under Billings? I mean he gets all the blame, does he get any credit? Does he get any credit for baseball, women's bb, soccer, track and field, gymnastics? Just curious.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 2:43 PM

things will not change within the athletic dept. until there are changes at the TOP! i guess a new a.d. next year could be the beginning. just makes you respect what coach hogan has done with the baseball program this decade while most of the other sports have floundered.

-- Posted by myershallred on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 2:16 PM

Let's see....Schurig is a winner for Washburn...and SIU football has been a winner since 2003 and they've been able to sustain the momentum.

To me, every SEMO fan should be pissed off at our Administration for not taking athletics very serious and letting things go to hell. It's too the point now that SEMO fans just don't care anymore and they almost expect us to struggle every year.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 2:11 PM

Counter Top;

I thought that's what I said.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 1:50 PM

redhawks07:yes, we know you wanted Schurig as coach instead of Samuel. Do you have to put that or something about SIU in every post??

semosupporter:If you are even the slightest semo fan you know that no selection committee ever chooses coaches. It goes through one man.

-- Posted by Counter Top on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 1:35 PM

Since when has the selection committee every been the ones to select anyone. I always thought that they were there for window dressing so the powers that be can say they went through a process.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 12:15 PM

Also, tell me WHY the selection committee chose Samuel over Washburn coach Craig Schurig, who obviously would have been a better choice.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Tue, Oct 7, 2008, at 10:39 AM

Hey Marty, am I the only one who heard ESPN praising David Lee, the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins? He has orchestrated their recent offensive success with an offshoot of the old single wing. He is also the same David Lee whose father went to SEMO, and he is the same guy that was "picked over" when SEMO chose Billings (I think...) as their head coach some time ago. I would think that the selection committee now has some 'splainin' to do!

Correction***The big blow was losing Hank Harris our starting PG.

Here Shooter....

http://www.gogriffons.com/roster.asp?spo...

-- Posted by RCIR on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 5:07 PM

SS, I was being somewhat you know..because Garner always said it was ok, when he trodded out a roster with only 7 guys dressed, like it was some badge of honor or something. It was never a big deal to him, so why should it be a big deal to Edgar?

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 5:05 PM

The big blow was losing Hank Harris out starting PG. Now you have Bijon Jones playing point (who knows how good he is) with the other point option being Kenard Moore. Kenard Moore was going to be one of our more potent scoring threats. I am not sure how he can do that and run the point.

I think it is time Williams step up and starting acting like a big 12 recruit. There is no more Bogan and Rembert to play behind.

The other guy is Herring and if we don't find more points from somewhere then he will see double teams all season long.

The wildcard is Maxwell who is coming off a year off who I think should step up and do more.

Johnny Hill who had flashes of "this kid can play" his freshman year but did not do much last year.

Jimmy Drew who is Jimmy Drew. Once he gets the ball on offense, guaranteed he is shooting it and on defense he might as well sit in the front row because he isn't very useful on that end of the floor. It will be interesting if any of these new guys can be impact players.

-- Posted by RCIR on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 5:05 PM

You are right, it is going to be a long year. But I will still go to games and hope they win. Stranger things have happened. Is Rhodes still with the Redhawks? Can't remember where I read it, but heard he left and is playing D-II ball.

-- Posted by shooter on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 4:59 PM

semoredhawk: What do you mean by "we should be ok". If by that you mean we will end up in the bottom portion of the OVC and miss the tournament AGAIN, then I agree. It doesn't matter if we have 10 or 13 scholarship players. This year is going to be a repeat of last year.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 4:46 PM

same old song and dance. we've been down this road too many times recently. we just continue to bring in kids who don't or can't qualify academically. or, after they arrive here, we find out there is a problem with their transcripts, or grades, or papers, or something else. when is someone going to be held accountable for this?!

-- Posted by myershallred on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 2:57 PM

Wonder if it will happen, but if someone is out there unsigned, wonder if Edgar will bring someone in at semester to fill a roster spot. I'm guessing it would have to be a JUCO kid. 10 guys is still 4 more then Garner used to have to suit up towards the end though, so we should be ok.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Oct 3, 2008, at 2:22 PM

This is going to be a Loooong year and it's going to get very ugly before March.
