Williams back at practice, will miss more games

Posted Friday, November 7, 2008, at 9:53 PM

SEMO junior forward Calvin Williams returned to practice Friday but will miss three more games.

Williams had been suspended by the university from all basketball related activities Oct. 25 following his arrest on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and driving without a license.

Cindy Gannon, SEMO's interim director of athletics, said in a release from the university Friday that Williams was allowed to resume practicing but will be suspended for Saturday's final exhibition game against MacMurray College and the first two regular-season games, Nov. 14 at New Mexico and Nov. 16 at Kansas State.

Williams appeared in court Thursday. He received a suspended imposition of sentence and was placed on probation.

"I think we have considered all issues and have been fair with our process and punishment," Gannon said in the release. "Calvin has been out of practice since Oct. 25 and will miss a total of four contests. The university considers the case closed and will have no further comment."

The 6-foot-9 Williams, SEMO's tallest player and only proven inside presence, missed the Redhawks' exhibition opener last Saturday against Missouri Baptist.

Overall, I believe the university handled the situation well. Williams was suspended for about two weeks of practice and four games. That seems like enough punishment. I like the young man and am happy he's allowed to stay with the program and in school.

This will not sit well with some, but I think it is fair. The kid got more than a slap on the wrist, but he still has a chance to capitalize on his skills with an education.

Now it is up to him...

Fair decision. No complaints here. At SIU, he just would have received a slap on the wrist.

Hopefully he'll learn from his mistakes and make a positive move forward....and also help us out on the court. We're going to need all the help we can get this season.

I'm ok with that, though Lillard did much worse IMO, and got nothing. Two regular season games is not the end of the world, SEMO wasn't going to win those anyways.

This football team still isn't any good.

1-13 on 3rd down

5 Turnover's

4 Rushing yards

Another TD given up on special teams on a return

I realize we only lost by 7 but THIS IS PATHETIC. Plain and Simple....

crap....wrong blog...

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Nov 8, 2008, at 6:45 PM

I thought SEMO looked good Sat. night.... I like this coach style of play... Kirk is going to be a player....he rebounds, plays pretty good defense, and has some jumping ability...

This team will be better than people think.... I know one thing....they will do better under the current coaching staff than Edgar...

Need to get a zone defense soon......

"This team will be better than people think"

How many wins are you predicting TIDAL?

I will say if we can get to 8 then we should count our lucky stars.

Marty,

Is there any word on how long Tarina Nixon will be out for the Women's team?

-- Posted by Skeet26 on Mon, Nov 10, 2008, at 2:24 PM
Marty Mishow's response:
Ishee didn't seem to think it was very serious at all the other night. He just didn't want to take any chances by playing her in an exhibition. Ishee seemed certain she would start Friday in the season opener.

Tidal are you saying better then people think, meaning they will win more then 6 games? I'm guessing we would be favorites for the Culver Stockton and SIUE home games, maybe the Longwood game in Vegas, and the JSU and EIU games at home.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 9:56 AM

What about Piri? He must have been a big project if he isn't going to get any playing time this year considering how few scholarship players the team has.

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 11:16 AM

The only other thing I saw Saturday night was there we're several baskets because SEMO did'nt get back on defense. I understand that JOnes is going to have to play 32 minutes plus a game but I think that is going to be a problem for the team. At least they are trying to play some defense

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 11:18 AM

I believe Semo can & will play well at home! I think teams will come into the Show-me Ctr overlooking them and get slapped. I see us as the surprise team this year winning 10 or more home games. Longwood, Oakland or Delaware State is a winnable road game for us, and maybe Arkansas State too. I predict a winning season. I give this team a 15-13 record.. The team has some good pieces! There will be a player on this team that will emerge and shock the conference. Go Redhawks! Zac Roman coach of the year !!!!!!

-- Posted by Baseline on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 11:31 AM

Baseline I hope your right but it seems to me that the team is very very thin at Point Guard and not much size in the post. I think they will shock some teams. If Mooore is hot and Herring is hot they will sshoot the three and beat some teams. Just like when they beat PEAY here last year. I'm a loyal fan but realisticaly I think 8 to 10 wins is what will happen

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 1:15 PM

SemoFan67 I agree - The team is thin but I believe the team is better, but time will tell. Last year we had too many people taking bad shots. People shooting the ball that had low shooting percentage from the floor. The fast and furious to me was just open an forum for anyone to take shots.(Mostly bad).Everyone doesnt need the green light! Some of the games we lost was due to bad shot selection, poor defense, and way too may turnovers.

Coach Roman is going to surprise all of you. I guarantee you one thing. This team will be VERY well coached and will play HARD everynight. I dont know much about the talent, but Coach Ro will not let them get embarrassed on a regular basis. He is a winner, and that will rub off on the kids. Lets all be excited about what SEMO can do this year. It will be a fun one to watch!

Rarely does a college basketball team make it through the whole season without an injury during the season, a suspension, a transfer, etc.

Last year it was Foust

the year before Rembert

the year before that Johnson, Thornton & Burtin

year before that Hale & Guerrier

and so on and so on.

Semo's already had an injury (Harris, and Drew to some extent), a suspension (Williams), an eligibility issue (Caviness), and a transfer (Pirre) - and the season hasn't even started yet. Imagine Jones getting hurt and Semo not having a single PG on the roster, or another player leaving at semester, or Drew's injury nagging him all season, or someone having grade issues at semester. No telling what the team may look like come mid-February. It's very hard to go through the season without an injury or something coming up.

Depth will be major issue as the season progresses.

-- Posted by boomerang on Tue, Nov 11, 2008, at 10:10 PM

I think they will win 10-12 Games.......

-- Posted by TIDAL on Wed, Nov 12, 2008, at 11:02 AM

I wouldn't say coach of the year - but Roman will turn some heads..... I think he will do a very good job - the guy knows fundamental basketball... I really like his style of play...

If he does well - very well - the University should sign him...just think how cheap we could get him.............but, our University doesn't seem too smart on hiring coaches....but first, this he has to show that he can coach at this level..... If he is not here next year, trust me, you will hear his name in the future....the guy can coach...

Jug is 100% correct - injury, suspension, etc has killed this University as far as basketball...

First, lack of funds to the program (Dobbins Choice) and now Edgar (Dobbins pick) has ran this program into the ground.......Over the past 4 years, injuries has hurt us as well...

Without some major injury or problem, this team wins 10 - 12 games this year.....Roman signs here or gets a good job somewhere else....just my opinion.....

Watch out for Kirk.....this kid will help a lot..

-- Posted by TIDAL on Wed, Nov 12, 2008, at 11:33 AM

Question, how does anyone proclaim "this guy can coach" when he is 0-1 at the DI level in terms of any level of head coaching responsibility? I'm just curious, as to how do you make the judgment? I don't know if he can coach or not. I don't think any of you do either. We will have to see. I think it is WAY too early to start that stuff. Be fair to the guy, and don't put expectations on him, that he may not be able to achieve. Talent alone should get us 2 wins: Culver Stockton and SIUE, anything after that is gravy.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Wed, Nov 12, 2008, at 12:06 PM

It did look to me like the team played more defense Saturday night than they did all last year. It will be interesting to see how they progress. I just wish we had at least one other point guard on the team. Moore does'nt look to me like he can shoot and play point at the sametime. If he has to play point it is going to hurt the offesne more. I do think Maxwell has looked better than expected. The other thing about this situation is that this is killing opur recruiting.

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Wed, Nov 12, 2008, at 5:00 PM

We all new this situation was going to kill our recruiting.

The ONLY way that Roman gets an extension as head coach is if he wins the OVC.

Tom Schuberth really wants this job and he's proven himself at the D-1 level, both as an assistant and as a head coach. We all know he can recruit. He's just waiting for a call from Dobbins...or the new A.D. With that being said, there doesn't have to be much of search for a new head coach. It would just take one phone call.

But will Dobbins make the right move?

-- Posted by semosoccer on Wed, Nov 12, 2008, at 10:58 PM

semoredhawk,

Just an opinion. I don't need to see a win/loss record to judge if someone can coach. You need talent to win...... As a coach, I've seen many great coaches who knew basketball get their butts kicked by bad coaches with a lot of talent. Believe me, I've seen it first hand. I know that coaches are judge on wins and losses - I agree with that.....I coach 4th - 12th grade... I coach approx. 75 games a year (and watch twice that many)...during that time, I see all kinds of coaches with all kinds of talent levels... I could tell this guy could coach after one game...I may be wrong..won't be the first time, but this guy is on his way up.....whether at SEMO or somewhere else.....

After watching Edgar in just one game - I told everybody on this board that he could not coach. Check the record. Edgar style of play "Fast & Furious" was garbage. Even I'm right every great moon or so...

Oh well, maybe it is too soon to say.... Just an opinion.....time will tell

-- Posted by TIDAL on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 8:38 AM

I wonder if Schubert still wants the job. HE'd be a great choice. I'm sure he can still recruit Memphis and other areas. Also if he cam at the end of the year I bet he would have kids he's recruiting right now follow him. I want to give Roman a chance and hope he does a good job I just don't think there is much oh a chance for a good season because of the circumstances that are beyond Roman's control

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 8:41 AM

Tidal,

Just playing devils advocate for a second. So Edgar could coach when he was at Murray, but he couldn't when he came to SEMO? Or was just the talent level at Murray was so massive that it overwhelmed the usually weak OVC? I'm not saying Edgar is/was a great coach, I'm just saying, he did do at Murray, what we hired him to do here.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't know if Roman can coach or not. And I don't really think that with this team, this year, it would be fair to really judge him on what happens.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 9:37 AM

Has anyone heard anything about any favorites for the Ad's job? I think whoever gets the Ad's job would probably impact Coaching changes, if any, in Basketball and Football. Also I thought it was interesting that Edgar's wife and son both came to the exhibiton games Saturday night. They came in during the second half. I guess I can see them wanting to be there because I would think they feel a connection to the current players.

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 10:14 AM

SemoFan67: YES 316 is right. Tom Schuberth still wants the SEMO job. I know it for a fact. Even Marty has stated it on here before. It's just a matter of whether or not Dobbins will make an offer to him.....or even consider him as a leading candidate for the job.

Of course this is assuming that Edgar will not be back.

-- Posted by semosoccer on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 11:01 AM

316 goes 3rd person on us.

"George is getting angry!"

-- Posted by boomerang on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 11:06 AM
Marty Mishow's response:
Now that was funny.

I think all this talk about TS is way too soon in the ballgame. Let's see what happens with the AD search.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 3:54 PM

Yes, generally I am always right on here. Nothing but the facts.

-- Posted by semosoccer on Thu, Nov 13, 2008, at 11:00 PM

316's head has swelled to the size of Dynamo the Dragon.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 14, 2008, at 9:28 AM

Who is Dynamo the Dragon?? If it's a mascot, hopefully the perosn that plays the part is a lot better than Rowdy the Redhawk. That's another issue.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Fri, Nov 14, 2008, at 11:44 PM

I think that we all can say that we are going to have to sit back and see what the season brings us. The team has the potential to go up or down. And I dont think that it all will have to do with the coach. The ideal team will consist of talent, along with a good coach. Having one or the other only works out some of the time. With all of the shortcomings that the men's basketball program has had so far we all should be ready to stand behind our guys with encouragement and faith and HOPE that everything turns out well. Support is the only thing that is going to be useful!
