Why SEMO men are playing before the women

I've had several people ask me why SEMO's men are playing before the women Friday when it's almost always the other way around during basketball doubleheaders at the Show Me Center.

Here is the answer, according to SEMO sports information director Ron Hines:

The men's game with Culver-Stockton was originally scheduled to be played Thursday, but because Culver-Stockton is having finals this week, the school's administration said the team could not play Thursday. So SEMO switched the game to Friday (you don't want an almost certain win to get away, that's for sure).

The women's game with Arkansas-Little Rock was already under contract for a night start, so that will be played at about 7:30 p.m. after the men's contest that is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

So there you have it.

The bottom line is that the women playing after the men has nothing to do with any strategic plan on SEMO's part, in case people might have been wondering.

SEMO's men should have no trouble picking up their first win Friday. Culver-Stockton, an NAIA program, is 0-5 and has no player on its roster listed taller than 6-5.

The SEMO women figure to have quite a battle with Arkansas-Little Rock in a matchup of defending champions off to 2-0 starts. While the Redhawks won the OVC regular-season title last year, the Trojans captured the Sun Belt West Division crown. It should be a really good game and the Redhawks will probably have to play well to stay undefeated.

Marty Mishow's response:
I actually had several other people ask me the same thing, so I figured it was worth the explanation.

Thanks for the compliment.

Regardless of the reason for the flip-flop, I hope the fans stick around to watch the women's game. They definitely deserve the support after back-to-back...(-to-back)... OVC championships. I'm sure the women would feel insulted if they saw a mass exodus of fans while they are warming up out on the court.

Why Culver-Stockton wasn't Three Rivers available..that is a joke to play a NAIA school..

Marty Mishow's response:
Why is that? Just about every other D-I school plays a lower-division opponent, often more than one. Check it out.

Don't you have to have a "mass" to have a "mass exodus"?

I don't think it really matters. Plus, it's kind of nice for a little change every now and then. And I also agree that the women definitely deserve the support and they've earned the chance to be the "main event" of the evening.

To be honest, I wouldn't expect a big crowd either way. Neither team is a huge drawing card.

Here's an actual big drawing card that IS in the works...or will be once we get a new AD in place:

SEMO-SIU football/men's basketball doubleheader on a Saturday in November. The series will start next year in Cape. Could very well be the men's BBall home opener. Not exactly who we need to open the season with, but at least it should draw a nice crowd to Houck and to the SMC. Might be more SIU fans than SEMO fans, but at least we'll have some butts in the seats.

MM-

Can you confirm that Semo will be playing SIU in Mens Basketball next year or is this just 316's wishful thinking?

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 3:26 AM
Marty Mishow's response:
The basketball thing is far from a done deal, and I don't even know if it will happen. Somebody who knows SIU's AD told me off the record that he would like to try to set up a fb/bb doubleheader in Cape next November, since the fb teams are already playing anyway. We'll see if it comes to fruition.

I am putting down money on the fact that it is 95% wishful thinking. Possible but very unlikely.

-- Posted by semo99grad on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 3:57 AM

I think the fb part is a done deal.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 6:27 AM

Yeah it is but the Bball is a LONG shot.

-- Posted by semo99grad on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 6:54 AM

Well we all know that FBALL is a done deal for a November game at Houck. The SIU AD, Mario Mochia, would like to work out a deal that would have SIU playing at SEMO in men's BBall that night at the SMC....in 2010 the games would held in Carbondale. Of course we don't even have a new AD yet....and we'll probably have a new men's BBall coach as well after the season, so I suppose anything is possible. But this is something that Mochia would like to see happen.

But to be honest, with as piss-poor as our FBall team is, we probably have no business playing SIU when we can't beat teams in the OVC.

Men's BBall - same story.

It might do better to play a women's/men's BBall doubleheader with SIU instead of a FBall/men's BBall. At least with the women's game, we could at least split the two games.

-- Posted by semo316 on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 7:56 AM

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a Coaches Clinic at SIU.... I got to see their men and women have a full practice.. We don't need to play SIU at this time...men anyway..

I actually thought our Women look better than theirs...

-- Posted by TIDAL on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 9:09 AM

Our women's BBall team SHOULD play SIU every year. That's a WIN for us.

There's NO WAY in hell our FBall or Men's BBall team should schedule SIU right now. That's just another lopsided LOSS for us.

-- Posted by semo316 on Thu, Nov 20, 2008, at 10:44 AM

Murray is no longer a "big" crowd game, so I would guess that SE would have "incentive" to get beaten up on their home court, if that meant they could sell a LOT of tickets doing it, and I guess SIU would do it, right?

Personally, I'd rather see SE get MoState back in, Ark State (which is supposed to come in next year) those teams are better games. I think Ark State should be SEMO's "big" non-conf rival, like Murray - WKU. Red Hawks vs Red Wolves..

Hey Roth! If you're going to put up stupid rumors at least look somewhat intelligent and get the spelling of the name of the man you are trying to quote! It's M-O-C-C-I-A. For someone who claims he has connections to the SIU department and the SEMO department (which you don't! From what I hear you are banned from both press boxes and press rows!) you really need to check your sources or come up with something a little bit more credible.

As for the rivalry. Yes, SIU has the advantage but that is no reason to not compete with SIU. Especially based on economics it makes sense. Short trip for both. Having Carbondale fans over here will generate money for Cape Girardeau. Missouri State or Arkansas State do not have a strong fan following. SIU does, especially since it's less than an hour away and most of their fans have some ties to Cape.

The bigger picture is wins and losses but the question is would you rather go to a SEMO vs D-II or NAIA school game or SEMO vs SIU? What will draw fans and who knows SEMO might capture lightning in a bottle and defeat our neighbors from the east. We did beat TSU (in football) and I remember SEMO beating SIU a couple of times in bball (the last time in 2001 the year SIU went to the NIT) a we kept it close and competitive in 2002 (their Sweet 16 year) and 2004.

SIU is the measuring stick for small universities and it took them a awhile to get where they are at. It won't happen overnight and SEMO is still trying to transition to D-I (yes it's been awhile but we were unprepared at the time and still are but I see changes on the horizon).

BTW does anyone here follow MLS soccer? If so how many realized that Kansas City has a team (actually any sports team)? Who cares!!! SEMO still outdraws them!

-- Posted by TwoHeadedSquirrel on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 2:23 AM

TwoHeadedSquirrel: Is that a Ray Stevens song? Oh I'm sorry....that's Mississippi Squirrel. Who cares about spelling? SIU Basketball did seem to change things overnight. I believe Rolan Roberts pretty much helped out with that. SIU went 16-13 in the REGULAR season in 2000-01, the year that Roberts transferred to SIU and had to sit out. The very next season the Salukis went 28-8 and went to the Sweet 16. You said it took them "a while" to get where they're at.....well that's pretty much overnight. It took SIU Fball just 3 years to become a powerhouse.

However, I would never expect that type of turnaround here at SEMO.

-- Posted by semo316 on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 8:36 AM

Marty..if you are going to schedule an NAIA school then schedule the best one available..not Culver Stockton..who wants to see that? There are some excellent NAIA Div 1 Schools that would love to play SEMO and would put on an excellent game for the crowd and make SEMO improve as a team..I doubt that Culver-Stockton will do that..and I hope that I am wrong.

-- Posted by semograd71 on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 8:37 AM
Marty Mishow's response:
With the state of SEMO's program right now, I don't think it would be wise to schedule a really good NAIA or D-II team and maybe get beat. For instance, Southwest Baptist -- a top-10 D-II team -- already won at Utah this year. The first rule of scheduling a lower-division opponent is to make sure you win.

I'm guessing after last night, SIU-C will be quicker to ink a deal with SEMO. They are going to need a few more head inflaters in their schedule, after the second half beat down they took!

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 9:09 AM

SIU played great D in the first half last night. They just can't score....with or without open looks.

-- Posted by semo316 on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 9:31 AM

Nah, Michigan played great defense last night; that 1-3-1 zone was darn impressive.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 10:37 AM

Point is...SIU at least stayed with Duke for a half. Pretty boring basketball though.

-- Posted by semo316 on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 10:51 AM

316, now you know how a SEMO fan feels..lol

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 12:00 PM

Are you saying SEMO plays boring basketball? I've actually thought our games have been somewhat entertaining in recent years, but very frustrating with the losses. That doesn't mean the games were boring though.

-- Posted by semo316 on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 3:38 PM

You missed the punch line.. "SIU at least stayed with Duke for a half."

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 6:23 PM

After watching tonight's game (I wasn't able to stay for the girls), to whoever made the decision to allow the team to have "SEMO" on the uniforms instead of having "Southeast Missouri" wrapped around the entire front of the jersey -- THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! It was so nice to see SEMO on the jerseys. THANK YOU!

-- Posted by boomerang on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 8:10 PM

It looked sharp..at least on the webcast

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 21, 2008, at 9:55 PM

I just now realized something...I know I am not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Why are the Semo Women playing Florida State at 10am on Tuesday??

That is an odd start time for a game in the middle of the week even if it is Thanksgiving week.

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Nov 22, 2008, at 8:20 AM

The 10 am start (don't forget - 11am their time in Florida) was Florida State's call. The kids in Tallahassee are going to be out of school for Thanksgiving break, and they are hosting Take A Kid to the Game that day, trying to get a bunch of kids to the game.

lets give Zac a chance...

-- Posted by garfrank on Sat, Nov 22, 2008, at 3:44 PM

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Zac Roman for more then this year. Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I am a big advocate of what I have called "the Murray model." Well, it was the Murray model, maybe not so much anymore. What that is, is get a young guy in who is motivated to move on and watch that person win, build a winner, and then move on to something bigger or better. That really hasn't been the model at SEMO. If Roman can get anything out of this team this year, and he has something lined up in terms of new talent, I'd like to see him get a shot, maybe. We will see. I'm not saying a 39 point win over an NAIA team opened my mind to it, but I heard that Roman made some adjustments at half to what Culver was doing, it sounds like they have some sense of what half-court defense it..who knows, I think he should be in the mix. I want to see where tings stand as far as recruiting. Can this guy recruit? That may be the biggest question going forward.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sat, Nov 22, 2008, at 10:09 PM

Can he recruit or find an assistant that can, like Garner did with TS? If he can win a few games and keep this team competitive, we might be onto something here.

For Semo fans who want to get a look at Longwood, the Longwood-Kentucky game is being broadcast on WDKA (channel 17 in Cape if you have Charter) Monday night at 6 pm. Kentucky should blow them out, no problem, but it will still be nice to see what they have.

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 23, 2008, at 8:03 AM

For those who want to watch the Iowa-SEMO game, it is supposed to be on the bigtennetwork.com. It is supposed to be a free webcast as well.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 23, 2008, at 10:59 AM

Roman made several adjustments at half... He also made some on the fly in timeouts.. thats something that Edgar lacked...

I really liked Culvur's offense... They had tremendous ball and player movement..... Derek Winons (sorry for the spelling) would have been the perfect recruit for that program.... Smart perimeter player, who is quick, can pass, and works without the ball.....

Too soon to tell, but I think that SEMO can be a top 6 team in the conference... I believe that Roman is going to have this team playing good basketball....no matter what level - to beat good teams, you have to be strong in the half court...

I was very pleased to see him play a little zone.... I hope that he mixes it in more and more... He played 2-3 zone with pressure on the ball...almost a match-up zone...

bottom line - we need more of a bench or at least everybody healthy or it could catch up with us in late Jan...

I agree on the uniforms.....SEMO thats the history of this University...don't change the way your known - change the perception...
