SEMO basketball teams suffer blowout lossesPosted Tuesday, November 25, 2008, at 9:09 PM
Although it doesn't really matter in the big picture of the season, Tuesday was not exactly a day to remember for SEMO basketball.
I'm not surprised SEMO's women got hammered at Florida State 62-31 for the Redhawks' first loss. The Seminoles are a legitimate top-25 team. I was surprised SEMO's men were totally destroyed at Iowa 75-41 in a game that was a blowout pretty much from the start. Iowa, which finished eighth in the Big 10 Conference last year, starts three freshman and is supposed to be in a rebuilding period. The Hawkeyes had won their first four games, but had faced a light schedule and struggled to beat the likes of Texas-San Antonio and Oakland (Mich.) at home. There were no struggles for Iowa against SEMO, which fell to 1-3 against a brutal early schedule that has featured three road games against major-conference opponents, including New Mexico (102-59 loss) and Kansas State (88-68 loss). The competition should lighten up a bit for the Redhawks the rest of the week as they head to Las Vegas to face Longwood (3-3) Friday and either Oakland (1-4) or Delaware State (1-6) Saturday. Those certainly aren't easy opponents for SEMO, but the Redhawks should be able to compete better than they did against Iowa, New Mexico and Kansas State. At least let's hope so or it could be an even longer season than anybody envisioned. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

If we don't win atleast 1 in Vegas it could be a longer season than I envisioned. There is no reason that we can't win 1 in Vegas. Even if we lose to Longwood, there is nothing that makes me think we can't beat Delaware State (provided they lose to Oakland).
That Iowa game tonight was nasty!!!!!
It's not out of the question to win both games, although Oakland is usually pretty decent and they've already won at Oregon.
Going 0-2 in Vegas will definitely be a bad sign in my opinion.
MM-
What do you think of Jacksonville State beating Umass? I know it is early but it sounds like Jacksonville State isn't going to be a punching bag this year.
It's probably going to be a long year regardless what happens in Vegas.

How many OVC teams would win over compete with New Mexico, Kansas State, or Iowa ?? Does that mean it will be a long year for every single team in the OVC ??? Every team in the OVC would have lost ALL of these games......that's a fact. What point total would make all the trolls on this blog not hammer SEMO ??
C'mon, let's wait to see a few things first before the final judgment and see if Zac can get things going.
I will reserve judgment until I see a few more things. I watched on the Big Ten Network tonight and it wasn't great, but I think they will get better. How much better.....I don't know and neither does anyone else.
Calm down let's wait and see. I'm not saying they will compete for the title, but let's wait and see how they improve before we hammer SEMO.
Marty, were the Iowa visting bb lockers painted pink like the visiting fb lockers?
Right now, SEMO has the 11th rated schedule in the nation. Take it for what it is worth.
You can't shoot 22% and not expect to lose by 30+ against an upper-div DI team. You shoot 22% in the OVC, and you are going to lose by 20, probably.
I agree that SEMO has played a really tough schedule so far and you can't read very much into what has gone on. A really good SEMO team would probably be 1-3 right now, although you would have liked to see them be a bit more competitive in some of these games.
It was an abysmal shooting day for both Redhawks teams, going a combined 21-108 (19%) from the field on the day.
If SEMO loses both games in Vegas maybe they should just stay in Vegas.
That said they have a decent shot with lightened competition to take two this weekend.
While I do agree showstopper, some stuff to chew on. We had a better team last year when we went to Chicago and nearly lost to Longwood. Also, one of the teams out there, Oakland, beat Oregon at Oregon and went to Iowa and lost by 9 where as we lost by 34. I think it is going to be hard for us to take 2 eventhough I hope we can somehow pull it off.
I predict we either beat Longwood and lose to Oakland or lose to Longwood and beat Delaware State.
....or lose both games. Definitely a possibility. Not that I want us to lose, but I just want this season to get over ASAP so we can hire Tom Schuberth and give him the chance to turn this program around.
I think one thing that is hurting this team right now is depth. Looking at the Iowa game only 7 players played. And that leaves only 1 or 2 players left on the bench. Not much to go on and that leaves us with one tired team.
While I think a more experianced coach would do us good I really want to see what Roman can do for this team. I'll just have to wonder what he could do for this team if he had more to work with right now.
I like Roman, but it's almost certain that he will not be the head coach next season. Assuming that Edgar's days at SEMO are done, Tom Schuberth should be the man that gets the next chance to turn our program around.
Roth, you must be so disappointed. Nice effort by the Redhawks.
