SEMO to play SIU, Memphis, SLU, ASUPosted Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 6:51 PM
You can't say Dickey Nutt will ease into his first season as the SEMO men's basketball coach.
While the Redhawks' entire 2009-10 schedule has not yet been released, the four opponents announced by the university today are formidable to say the least. Nutt's first SEMO team will play SIU-Carbondale and Arkansas State at home, while facing Memphis and Saint Louis on the road. The Redhawks open the season Nov. 14 at SLU in a guarantee game that I've been told will net the SEMO athletic department $75,000. SEMO plays its first regular-season home game Nov. 18 against Arkansas State, Nutt's former squad that routed the Redhawks last season in Jonesboro, Ark. The highly anticipated renewal of the SIU series will be Dec. 9, with SEMO returning the game to Carbondale, Ill., next season. Nutt told me he'll do everything in his power to make sure the Redhawks and Salukis play each year as long as he's at SEMO. SEMO and SIU last met during the 2004-05 season, so I know Redhawks fans are thrilled that the Salukis are finally back on the schedule. The Redhawks will play another guarantee game at nationally prominent Memphis Dec. 22, which will bring in $85,000. The remainder of the SEMO schedule that will feature 14 regular-season home games, along with two home exhibition contests, will be released soon after all contracts are signed. I have learned that SEMO will also host Eastern Michigan, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and NAIA Williams Baptist College, in addition to the nine OVC home games. Among other road dates will be a game at Northern Illinois -- the Huskies rolled past SEMO at the Show Me Center last year in the BracketBuster -- and a tournament at Illinois State featuring contests against the host squad, St. Bonaventure and Norfolk State. SEMO will receive $60,000 for the Illinois State tournament, meaning the Redhawks will bring in a cool $220,000 for the athletic department. Overall, it's quite a challenging schedule for one of the nation's worst teams last season that went 3-27 and did not post an OVC victory. Good news. Prominent schools on the schedule is good for recruiting and the fans. Our athletic department appears to have some strong leadership. Hopefully "coach" Dobbins will allow them to continue what has become a good start.
This is a really good schedule to say the least. And a good home schedule. Right now is a good time for semo to get decent teams to come in here, as teams get rewarded in the RPI for road wins, and playing SEMO is a low-risk deal right now.
I really don't see the reason for playing these teams. We won 3 games last year. We are in a massive rebuilding mold with lots of problems. These games are simply MONEY games. Basketball is now following the successful (lol) blueprint of the Football program - we are going to be everybody's homecoming game for a buck $$$$$$.
What does our program gain (other than a pay day) from playing these teams?
I would love to be able to see Memphis State play at the Show-Me-Center.........but not at the price of a major butt wooping.. sure its nice to play one team that is out of your league every year...it can give your team an idea of what it takes to be at that level ... but we just signed up for 4 butt woopings..... We can't even beat 1 team in our conference... trust me as a coach - your team does not gain much from getting dominated by a team that your best player could not even make their team - much less play...
I really don't see getting beat by 30-40 points helps in the recruiting process...
We have went from winning three games, a new AD, a new Coach/Staff, and a basically new team to playing these four teams...just what the Doctor order for a weak and failing program...or better yet - just what the King ordered for $
anyways - maybe the added pay days will allow the King to increase the basketball budget????? lol
You have to play someone and you need to play some D1 schools at home outside your conference to fill your home schedule. You can't just load up on D2 and NAIA teams.
$75k to play SLU and you don't have to spend the night and travel isn't much. What a deal. That will be good. Charter usually picks up SLU games that KPLR doesn't, and I've heard on pretty good word that KPLR is picking up more SLU games, not sure how many more, but more then they have in the past.
$85k to play Memphis, and you could go without staying the night..
EMU is a good home game, from an improving team in a good conference. OVC teams should be playing teams from the MAC.
ARK State was going to happen before Nutt got here, I am pretty sure. That's been on the table for a while. Plus the story lines are crazy here.. Brady almost lost to SEMO in the NCAA tournament in 2000. Brady replaces Nutt at ASU. Brady is a Final 4 coach, NCOY.. not that people come to see coaches, but..
SIU-C is SIU-C, and will be the most attended game of the year. Good for the university to have 1 above 5k attended game.
It seems funny that someone who acts like they know everything about basketball because they coach some local kids doesn't know that the University of Memphis hasn't been called Memphis State University for fifteen years.
Tidal. What would happen if SOMEHOW Semo upset Memphis? Don't you think that would help recruiting and the program? Its a no risk-very high reward deal. Now they prolly won't beat Memphis, but who cares if they don't? Its a win win I think
Has it really been fifteen years? Doesn't seem like that long.
One of my favorite Memphis State stories was about Kieth Lee. He was being recruited by Arkansas State and when someone asked him about Jonesboro, he said, "It is not the end of the Earth, but you can see it from there..."
I like these deals, EXCEPT for the SIU-C game. No way do we need to playing the Salukis this coming year. Even though Lowery is rebuilding, they're miles ahead of us.
As far as the SIU-C game being the highest attended game of the season....while that maybe true, it certainly wouldn't take much to top any of our crowds from last year.
I wouldn't go out and put any money on 5,000 people showing up just yet. If you go back and look when they play at the SMC the last time, which was in Dec,. 2004, LESS than 5k were on hand... and that was a Saturday night, and we actually had a decent team that year. It will depend on how both teams start the season. It's getting close to final exam time for both schools, so unless it's promoted right to the SEMO students, do expect to see a huge "Rowdy" student section there. Do our students even see SIU-C as a huge rival? I mean it's huge for our SEMO Alums, especially those of us from the Southern Illinois area. We're living for the day that we can once again beat...or at least compete with the Salukis on the BBall court on a yearly basis. But this time around, we'll be lucky if we can keep it within 20, even at the SMC.
The chances of making it a game with Memphis are getting better everyday. If anyone has been following the sports news lately, Memphis is losing the commits that Cal had. They will still be good, but nothing approaching the last few years. As long as Cal was the coach at Memphis you could forget about home and homes or 2-1 deals. ASU tried forever to get Cal to come to Jonesboro and he wouldnt do it. Now with the young guy there who knows. I'd love to see some CUSA, Sun Belt schools come to the Show Me Center.
asuato- you are living on another planet if you think Memphis would ever come play at the Show-Me Center. Will never happen. I also think Memphis will be about as good as they have been the past few years. Pastner just signed a 5 star player the other day and the cupboard is not bare.
In other news...

Data48,
Growing up a little over an hour from Memphis - they will always be Memphis State to me... I've been a Memphis STATE fan since Dana Kirk was the coach.... Keith Lee was my favorite player...as for thinking that I know everything about basketball..lol...I don't know everything..just almost..lol
------------------------
Kingjames,
I would love to upset Memphis STATE...I just don't see it.

The University is getting a lot of money. Lets see how much the University (Dobbins) increases the Basketball budget next year... I hope taking these butt woopings will atleast benefit the team budget wise.... The money games has sure paid off with the Football games - look how much it has improved the team....lol.....I bet the bball budget doesn't move a inch...
I hope to be wrong...Maybe we upset on of these teams, hang tight with the others, and King Dobbins increases the budget due to the quarter of a million gained from these games....
I must admit - I do enjoy watching SIU play Defense...they close out on every pass...and defensive fundamentals are pretty amazing..I got to see them practice twice last year....their practice is a defensive clinic...
myershallred (aka Jug),
I know you were a big Memphis STATE fan back in the early 80's....Remember when Keith Lee dominated Patrick Ewing???? GeorgeTown won, but Kieth Lee wooped Ewings butt on the floor...
Remember seeing Bo Jackson when he played for the Memphis Chicks Triple A club...I think the Chicks changed their name as well....oh well - I guess I don't know baseball now...8 Dollars..lol
TIDAL: I wonder if the SEMO players even what "defense" means? Well if not, they'll see it when the Salukis come to town. And even though they had an unusual "off" year this past season, look for Lowery to rebound this coming season, maybe not a 25-win season, but they'll be a very solid team. Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll take a nose dive like SEMO did after the 2000-01 season. It's possible, but not very likely.
So, if you're admitting that you stubbornly live in the past and refuse to change your way of thinking on even this very simple matter why should we listen to anything else you have to say?
Data48,
such a broad statement
You shouldn't listen to what I have to say...if I were you - I wouldn't even read my comments on this blog - just skip right over my post....after all - although a person has followed a team for close to 30 years - if that person still refers to Memphis University as Memphis STATE - that person must be stubbornly living in the past and refuses to change his way of thinking on simple matters - not only that - but that person must not know anything about basketball or he wouldn't dare refer to Memphis University (out of habit) as Memphis State....lol
Well I better get off here and start making calls to all my relatives and friends down south...I need to inform them that they can no longer refer to Memphis University as Memphis STATE....I wouldn't want them to be labeled...
oh yeah - maybe we need to inform all the fans that refer to Southeast Missouri State University as SEMO over the past 15 yrs or so...
I agree - just skip my post...lol
A girl I used to date as an undergrad went to Memphis State for her grad school. She was there during the change-over. It is still MSU to her, so I see no reason why people can't call it that. I know for a fact, I heard it called Memphis State a couple of times during the tournament last year. Kind of like Rolla. You think all of those long-time Miners are going to start calling Rolla, Missouri Science and Tech..lol..
Similar to Missouri State. It will always be SMS to me. I never went there, but I was in school at SEMO for the change, and it will always be SMS. Same with SEMO. Even though many at the university want everyone to call it Southeast, I'll be calling it SEMO until they put me six feet under.
Go INDIANS!!!
So technically what you are saying is that SEMO is already 0-4 even before they play a single game.
That's one way to put it.
At least they have some quality opponents to play which is a major change in the right direction. Who wants to watch the games they have scheduled in the past few years?
How much fun is it to watch your team lose by 40 points?
Does this mean that the bball program gets more money in next years budget? NO
It means that the King gets a new parking lot or building....
Mark my word - this extra money from taken these butt woopings will not stay in the Athletic Budget. The actual money from the games may, but the King will take other money away from the Athletic budget....this money will go into his "Rainy Day" fund..
Has the football budget increased over the passed several years from its money making butt wooping games.
__________
heres how the conversation goes......
"Mr. AD" - Hey coach, guess what?
"Nutt" - Whats that?
"Mr. AD" - Although you are taken over a team that was one of the nation's worst teams last season that went 3-27 and did not post an OVC victory. I'm going to add SIU, Memphis STATE, SLU, and Ark State to your schedule.
"Nutt" - Are you a crazy Nut?
"Mr. AD" - No, your the Nut. The King needs money for a new parking lot.
"Nutt" - So you want me to start this massive rebuilding stage playing these four teams...How am I suppose to keep my guys motivated and show the fans that there is hope in this years team?
"Mr. AD" - Upset one of these teams... Who cares, just make sure they address the checks to - the KING....

before you guys get bent out of shape - I'm just kidden around...lol
I'm sure Nutt wanted all four butt woopings..lol
Is Arkansas State really that unbeatable?
Yea, let's just play a bunch of D2 or NAIA schools so that we can feel good about yesterday! If SEMO wants to play that kind of schedule, I say have them do it on a full time basis. Afterall, that is the kind of budget they are operating off of, right? :)
Tidal, do you have any idea of how much money FB loses on an annual basis? A lot of those "$$$" rear-end beatings go towards making FB whole, if it is even possible. I've heard on past occasions it is close to a half mil a year in the red. Despite your contention that all of the money goes into the "rainy day" fund, I'm pretty sure most of it goes to offset scholarships for the other sports, operations for the other sports, because FB drains quite a bit of the athletic budget.
http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/InstDetails....
Reporting Year: 7/1/2007 - 6/30/2008
Reporting Official: Torry Rollins
Title: Assistant AD - Business Affairs
Football Revenue = $1,678,260
Football Expenses = $1,472,785
Total Revenue of All Sports combined, minus football & basketball = $1,505,532
Total Expenses of All Sports combined, minus football & basketball = $1,997,779
FB must be doing better then the past, probably because of the $$$ games. I know I had a BOR member tell me a while back that FB was bleeding red. But look at the fact that the department is about a half mil in the red wihtout FB and BB. This whole rainy day fund discussion is without merit. The department barely breaks even.
I just read where Coach Bret Campbell resigned at UT-Martin...
I understand using the old name out of habit for few years after the change but after fifteen years not using a university's proper name shows a lack of respect, intelligence, maturity or all three. How many people do you think would make the same point if I referred to Southeast as State Teachers College all the time just because it used to be called that?
Tidal you are missing the point. If you want a quality program you have operate it like a quality program. That means play a quality schedule that is used to subsidize your program and also bring some attention to it from other regions. How can you say recruit from these areas and not play there
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/...
How does this happen, and Mizzou or SLU are not part of this event?
LocalFan12,
it also means to fund the program like a quality program.........I just don't see the benefit other than a pay day.....
I've often wonder why King Dobbins would hire an AD that is at the end of his career....a couple years from retirement... its starting to make sense now ... let me say, I like this AD and I'm not saying that he is a bad hire or questioning his qualifications....but working for the King for 7 years and having an understanding of his leadership style and being familiar with the University budget committees, etc.....it all make sense...I'm just speculating ... I could be 100% wrong.........but I bet it came down to "Pay Day" games....if all you are interested in is raising money for the Athletic Dept and University...which in itself is not a bad thing as long as getting paid does not affect the well being of a very poor program that is at rock bottom....anyways - if given an opportunity, why would you not hire a AD from a big conference that has ties (relationships) with other big schools.....for example Memphis STATE...as an AD of Ole Miss ..he would have a relationship with the AD from Memphis State...I'm sure that our AD told the King - I can get some very big name schools to play SEMO and possibly bring in a quarter of a million dollars...if that did happen - I bet the King's eyes lit up...
Before you guys start ramping and raving... this post is not meant to negative about the AD at all.... just pointing out $$$$$ are more important than the rebuilding of the program...
I challenge you guys to tell me how our program benefits from playing 4 money games against these teams.....other than money - how does playing these games benefit the rebuilding process...
Is it an opportunity to:
gain a win
work on our offense
work on our defense
increase team morale
increase team confidence
prepare for the conference games (very important)
build support from the fans
I don't see the benefit....getting dominated and destroyed by these teams will hurt all of the above....
Why would a team like Memphis want to play SEMO? What do they have to gain? What does SEMO have to gain (besides cash)?
King Dobbins has sold out....Over the last nine years - our program has come from nearly upsetting LSU in the NCAA tournament to one of the worse programs in the NCAA.... Why?
and now - after winning three games last year - we get to play these four teams....
What is the benefit? please tell me....
I know Recruiting will come up.....I can see one of our coaches (which combined ages are less than our AD) sitting in a living room....you have to come to SEMO... I know we only win 3 to 5 games a year, but we get to play Memphis STATE, etc and get a 40 point beat down.....
look at our young coaching staff...wheres the money to hire coaches with experience??? I like all three of the hires...don't get me wrong...but all three are qualified to be the 3rd assistant...
Do you think the basketball program will get more money...no way.... this AD is going to have the Athletic Dept breaking even or making a little....which is great as far as the University goes, but the bball program will not benefit from it...somebody has to pay for all the other sports...as Boomerang's stats showed...
Dobbins formula for rebuilding a program:
*Hire an AD that is at the end of his career
*Hire a life-time .500 coach
*Don't allow any money in the budget to hire well qualified asst coaches
*Play 4 Cash Games
Why not sell the Show-Me-Center and start playing in the pit again? lol
Please tell me how we benefit by playing these games?
Please tell me what the King has done to help rebuild the program that he has help destroyed?
Why is everything such a conspiracy?
31607 got a plug in Bernie's bits this weekend!!
Tidal, have you seen any Black Helicopters lately?
Tidal has gone off the deep end.
Who is 31607?
LOL - I love the comments...lol

Dickey Nutt story on espn.com

This article confirms to me that even at the rock bottom of the OVC, the non-participation portion of college basketball is a snake oil industry. How about meeting your head coach more then in passing or in person more then once before you hire him, or for that matter doing a few interviews? Was anyone else even brought in for an interview? LOL..

Schedule****
Schedule doesn't blank at all. I can't believe how balanced it is between home and away. No real long road trips, no real long home stretch either; I mean dispite the $$$$ games, which you can't avoid. I think it is a good schedule on balance. Think about this, if that was planning on being a good SEMO team, you would want this schedule down the stretch. If this was to be a good SEMO team, people would like our chances with the way the schedule plays out the last two weeks.
