UTM basketball coach resignsPosted Saturday, June 6, 2009, at 8:34 PM
Tennessee-Martin basketball coach Bret Campbell has resigned after, according to news reports, an internal audit found he violated school policies by cashing checks for summer basketball camps.
In an announcement Friday, UTM athletics director Phil Dane said the basketball program that Campbell led to its first OVC championship and NIT tournament appearance this past season is in compliance with NCAA rules. According to news reports, the university audit dated Wednesday said Campbell cashed or deposited a total of $21,145 into his personal account, which should have been deposited into university accounts. The audit said he paid for the camp's expenses and officials in cash from the deposited checks. From talking to various people, I don't think the issue is Campbell trying to steal any money from the university, he simply didn't follow proper procedures in running the camps. It seems a little extreme to lose your job over this, but maybe more light will be shed on the situation in the future. Does that mean they will put the half circle down like the NBA does? Next to traveling, the enforcement of the charge/block is the most inconsistently applied rule. They should eliminate the blocking call all together, and say it is either a charge, or incidential contact. That would reduce contact quite a bit. How many guys would go head first into a defender knowing that they can't pick up a cheap blocking call?
It is my understanding that they are not going to put the circle in the lane. Bad idea, in my opinion...
