Drew no longer part of SEMO basketball programPosted Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 10:26 PM
Jimmy Drew is no longer a member of the SEMO men's basketball program.
First-year coach Dickey Nutt told me Wednesday that Drew will not return to the Redhawks following his recent arrest for driving while intoxicated. Drew was arrested May 30 in Scott County. He was charged with DWI and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway. Drew, a junior guard from Anna-Jonesboro (Ill.) High School, redshirted this past season with a foot injury. I'll have a full story in Thursday's Missourian.
On a different subject, no SEMO baseball player was taken during Wednesday's second day of the baseball draft, when rounds four through 30 were conducted. The draft concludes Thursday with rounds 31 through 50. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Maybe Drew can find a Division III program that will take a chance on him. That is where he should have been all along.
This tells me one of two things. Either Nutt was wanting to get rid of Drew and this was his chance or Nutt will have a zero tolerance policy. At most any other school a player that had never been in trouble and did this would never be kicked off the team or ask to leave. Punished, yes, but never ask to leave the program. What if this had been Leon Powell? I'm not saying it's right or wrong. It really doesn't matter to me. I'm just making an observation.
I'm going to guess that this was a matter of opportunity. I know the speculation was that he was going to get last year back, but I haver heard Marty or anyone saying to the affirmative. The only problem I have is that we are already under the gun by the NCAA, and who knows what other penalties we will be handed; the APR score doesn't help, and I'm just worried about how many more current roster guys can we lose and not be in serious peril with APR? Even if the NCAA rules committee doesn't give us a post-season ban, the APR group might. We have already seen that the APR group is going to nail OVC schools hard when it comes to academic performance and grad rates.
Who cares about Jimmy "JD" Drew. The guy never played b/c of these mysterious injuries. With all the time this guy has had, do you think he is good as some of these new guys Nutt has brought in? Plus, this frees open a scholarship since we lost one thanks to Edgar.
I'm not sure if Nutt is making an example out of Drew since he was'nt one of his recruits or if he will really have this type of no tolerance policy. It would seem pretty severe. I still think it was mysterius last year that Drew was cleared by Semo doctors to play and would'nt play when you have Kirk out there gutting it out with a stress factor
They pretty much took a very little tolerance policy with Cal too..so maybe under this regime there isn't going to be much room for kids to screw around. Not saying that is a bad thing either.
I know this has nothing to do with drew but i heard that kid from viana brett thompson is looking to transfer what about semo having a chance we need a big kid
Where does he go to school now?
As far as a player, I believe he will not be missed. He wasn't a huge asset or even a minor asset in my opinion. When he played, his contributions were minimal . . . and he hardly played. The APR is another question.
Thompson (a 6-10 center from Vienna, Ill.) is transferring from SLU. Here's a link to the school's story:

Good riddance to a useless player.
Wonder why Donald Davis and another new guy aren't on the roster yet?
Who is the other new guy you are referring to?
Some kid named Banks has been rumored to be with the team or is going to be with the team. Kid out of West Plains. We will see.
Does the RS by Kirk's name mean he is sitting out this year? He didn't come in as a RS, if I remember correctly. Interesting. If that is the case, then they could potentially bring in one more person, I think.
Nevermind, I need to read the bios.
The players listed are those who are officially with the team. In terms of newcomers those are the ones that have filled out the necessary papers to be released. If they are new walk-ons they still need to get the proper paperwork submitted and approved before being added onto anything that the university releases.
As for Drew, wish you all the haters would just let the kid be. He proved he could play at this level. At one point he was amongst the nation's leader in three-point shooting and won a game for the Redhawks with a three-pointer. Everyone is quick to assume that he was faking an injury, he didn't trust the SEMO doctors (who's primary job is to keep players on the court). He should have been shutdown last year when he originally had the stress fracture but Edgar played him which caused nerve damage in his foot. Which a specialist in Springfield found and the doctor's at SEMO later confirmed and agreed with. Let's just wish the kid good luck!
TwoheadedSquirrel: Your assessment of the SEMO medical staffs priority is incorrect. The evolution of the diagnosis, confirmation of the diagnosis, and subsequent evaluations as expressed by you are incorrect. Jimmy Drew is an excellent young man. He is conducted his life the best he can with support of SEMO, his family, and his medical providers. I am sure is will succeed wherever he lands.
