Hansbrough, Carroll, Hudson spice NBA draftPosted Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 11:27 AM
There was a nice regional flavor to Thursday's NBA draft, topped by Poplar Bluff native Tyler Hansbrough being the 13th overall pick.
Hansbrough, a forward who completed his brilliant career at North Carolina as the ACC's all-time scoring leader, was taken by the Indiana Pacers. Plenty of talk has centered around what type of NBA player the 6-foot-9 Hansbrough might be. Various experts have questioned his athleticism and potential ability to thrive against bigger, quicker and faster players. Hansbrough, during workouts with various NBA teams, reportedly proved to be more athletic than many people had given him credit for. And there was never any question about his work ethic and desire, which have always been off the charts. My take on Hansbrough is that I'm not sure he'll ever be a marquee NBA player, but he's got enough going for him to at worst carve out a long and solid career at basketball's highest level. In somewhat of a surprise, Missouri forward DeMarre Carroll went in the first round, No. 27 overall to the Memphis Grizzlies. Carroll had widely been considered a probable second-round pick. Carroll is a high-energy player who, like Hansbrough, has incredible work ethic and desire. Plus he's fairly skilled for a bigger player. Finally, Tennessee-Martin guard Lester Hudson barely slipped into the draft, going in the second round to the Boston Celtics. Hudson was the 58th of 60 selections. Hudson's story is a neat one as he overcame a rough upbringing and academic issues that limited his high school hoops career to thrive at UT-Martin and become one of the top players in OVC history. In addition, Hudson earned his college degree, which is something he publicly stated was a major goal of his before he entered his pro career. As a second-round pick, Hudson -- the first OVC player taken in the NBA draft since Austin Peay's Trenton Hassell went No. 29 overall (the first selection of the second round) in 2001 to the Chicago Bulls -- is not guaranteed an NBA contract. But Hudson has got enough talent -- along with the work ethic and heart that mark the styles of Hansbrough and Carroll -- to stick with the Celtics, who won the NBA title just two seasons ago. Hey Roth, if you are out there, you will love this.. KPLR is going to televise several upcoming St. Louis Athletica games.. I'm pretty sure, but I don't think there are any former SEMO players on the athletica, mostly Lindenwood and SLU girls, I believe, I might be wrong though.
he's a great story for sure. i remember watching him a few times here at trcc. it's nice to see positive stories about c'ville and the bootheel in general. it seems like most of the stuff reported is negative. jimmy jackson and william moore helped the area out the last few years too.
myershallred,
What do you think about Matt Palmer? I taught the boy his curve ball. Diane his sister is on cloud nine.. talk to her last week... Just a year ago, Matt told me that he was close to giving up on baseball....now, I believe he is 7-1 with the Angels...
myershallred,
My sister told me about the poll. I received the most votes, but my vote would go to Gubin. I grew up watching the guy play. He was awesome. There has been a lot of great tennis players from Cville - I'm happy just to be mention.
hey tidal,
you still smackin the yellow ball around huh? i saw a pretty good thread on topix a few weeks ago about the best tennis players in the ville. i think most "old timers" would say gubin, but you'd definitely be on the mt. rushmore. as for tyler, i don't know about all-star but i definitely think he'll be a much better nba player than most think he will. he'll continue to work on his game and improve in the areas he needs to in order to make himself the best he can be at that level.
I believe Hansbrough will eventually become an All-Star...theres something about the guy that can not be taught on a bball court..your born with it....and he has it....
Marty,
Your a pretty good tennis player.. On Tuesday, my daughter was working-out with SEMO's girls tennis coach...
I started to introduce myself, but you seem to be in a hurry and I didn't want to intrude on your game... The next morning, the gentleman that you were playing against was there again...very nice guy..
I'm at the courts all the time - if I see you again- I will introduce myself..
As for Hansbrough, I hope you're right. I think he definitely has something that can't be taught. But the way the NBA is now, it seems like most of the elite players are so freakish athletically, which also can't be taught.
