Long way to go for SEMO men

Posted Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 12:05 AM

My thoughts on the SEMO men's basketball team didn't change after watching tonight's 73-49 beatdown by Arkansas State.

Like I wrote after the 59-41 loss at Saint Louis U. in Saturday's season opener, the Redhawks are simply short on skilled offensive players, especially inside. Scoring figures to be a major problem all year, which is something first-year coach Dickey Nutt touched on during the preseason.

I still like the way the Redhawks try to defend and compete, but lets face it, this team is short on legit D-I talent, which I think everybody pretty well knew going in. With Nutt getting such a late start, he pretty well had to take what he could find to build some kind of roster. Leon Powell would really help, but he won't be available until next season because of his injury.

I've said it many times, but you just don't dig out of a 3-27 disaster overnight. Getting this program on track is going to take time and people just have to be patient.

If you lack size you should press and play up tempo..make the other team play faster than they want to..otherwise start the 6'5 and 6'4 guards with the 6'6'..6'6..and 6'8 and take care of the ball...playing the way we are playing with the smaller guards who can't penetrate doesn't seem to be the way to play...

Tidal

I pretty much agree with you about Dobbins. The point is it doesn't do anyone any good to continually ***** about it on here. If you really feel that strong about it then take steps that might really effect the situation not just gripping on a blog which won't accomplish anything.

TIDAL, I'll take a ride on the copter! lol

thats a blimp at halftime not a helicopter!.....

(yes I know the helicopter thing is a joke)

RCIR,

One of your buddies on here pointed you out to me at a game a couple of years ago...I see you a lot at the games.....I must say, you look like a little troll...lol Maybe you can be the co-pilot my black helicopter..lol Wait - Your boss/ruler might not like that...lol You walk right pass me all the time...I'll be sure to say hi..

Semosupporter,

I agree with you....I need to give it a rest...Its the bootheel in me - Its hard to sit back and take it...I feel so strong about the King (if you only knew the whole story) - that I found other employment...just couldn't stomach it anymore....I'm not the bumble bee type of person...anyways, just because most of you have accepted the destruction of this program...doesn't mean you want to hear about it all the time....I'll give it a rest....I still have to come meet you....Maybe I can take you for a ride on my black helicopter during half time...lol

Go Redhawks...

To paraphrase an old saying--"Figures lie and liars figure."

On the Kenpom site: Louisville is 1; SLU is 6; Murray is 9; SEMO is 40 (believe it or not). Those numbers will change.

Believe this stat or not, but Kenpom does a stat called offensive efficiency, and SEMO is 21st in the nation right now. Pretty much it is points per 100 possessions. SEMO is 141 in defensive efficiency - points allowed per 100 possessions.

Not that it matters too much yet, but in the Sagarin rpi, Mizzou is #25, Illinois #29, Nebraska #64 (for those of you downplaying the SLU win), SIU #84, Mo. State 103, St. Louis #116 (soon to drop after upcoming cupcakes with SEMO-esc RPI's), Murray State #148, East Tennessee State #151, Austin Peay #164, Middle Tn #179,UTM #209, Arkansas State #216, TN Tech #220, Morehead St. #242, Samford #246, Eastern Illinois #293, UMKC #297, WIU #304, Central Ark #320, SIUE #329, SEMO is #333 ...hey according to the list you guys have 14 teams rated worse! I think that's better than you were last year. Looks like your new coach is already improving things! Things are looking up.

Thanks Gomer. And I do like the idea of piloting that black helicopter. And it has been a long time since I posted, but unfortunately, nothing has changed since.

He's the pilot of Tidal's black helicopter circling the Show Me Center!!!!LOL

Before someone chimes in here, YES I KNOW LINDENWOOD AND MOBERLY ARE NOT D1 and I am not comparing the 3 programs here...but for what it's worth Soderberg and Lindenwood are 4-1, while Spoonhour and Moberly are 6-1.

The last thing Tidal needs is a troll to help him troll his bridge.

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 4:35 PM

I agree with Tidal, I wouldn't be too optimistic about either program until house is cleaned at the top of th efood chain.

Nashville. But they were going to Nashville regardless if Foust doesn't blow his knee out.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:53 PM

Right, and I don't even know if Nutt will get us to the NCAA tournament again, but at least if he can get us to having a winning by % program, that may be good enough for a while. SEMO would be ok with having a .500 program for the next 5-6 years, I would think. Get us to where EKU is, a solid OVC program now, who makes a run at it every couple of years, but still is solid on off years, instead of the turkey shoot program we developed, and have.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:47 PM

what do you think nutt could have done with the 07-08 redhawks team that was loaded with talent...foust, bogan, johnson, herring, moore, rembert, williams, pearson, rhodes...

-- Posted by semoh on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:42 PM

I know Samuel will get his 5th year. And I'm not saying that Nutt shouldn't get a 5th year, I'm just saying we should wait and see where we are at the end of the year before automatically saying he's gonna get his 5th year. I am on board with Nutt though, too.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:11 PM

Dom, Nutt will get his 5yrs. No doubt. Samuel will get his 5th year, no doubt. I'm on board with Nutt, just that this thing needs to be talent ready by yr 3.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 12:12 PM

And as far as Nutt's contract, while they're two completely different things and are in two completely different places right now, Samuel has a 5-year contract and I think a lot of us are wishing it was only 4. I think we should wait out this year and see where Nutt has us heading into next year. Simply an opinion, though.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 11:36 AM

I like what a lot of people are saying on here with regards to Nutt, recruiting, rebuilding, patience, etc. I do agree that it will take some time and patience to rebuild the program, especially from where we were with regards to the cheating and last year's record. However, I do think Nutt has a lot of passion for the game and that if we stick with him, he'll be able to get us headed back in the right direction. And to whoever said that a .500 coach isn't what we needed, while I'd much rather be above .500, I'll take a .500 year over a 3-27 year. I also like the fact that you can always spot Shafer on the sidelines of a football game and basketball games wearing the colors. I feel like he's really trying hard to turn us around.

On a completely unrelated note, they've been working on the speakers in Houck. I don't know if they replaced them or just fixed them, but I do know for a fact that there are new speakers mounted on each side of the press box. Just thought I'd mention it....

-- Posted by dominicstl on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 11:32 AM

81, what I was saying is that next year, you can't just go and cut all of those guys and bring in another batch of 10 or 11 players; so next year really isn't going to be much better. Then you are looking at year 3, and granted more space will open up, but you better be talent ready by then, or blood will be in the water.

Say we do win 5-6 games this year, I wouldn't be opposed to giving Nutt an add on year just so that he's not a lame duck in his 3-4 year. That would make sense to me. That gives you 4 years to really give it some time. You have to keep in mind that he only got a 4 year deal to start with, not the typical 5.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 11:30 AM

Just another troll.

-- Posted by gomer on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 11:13 AM

Nutt went JUCO to help turn the roster over. He will likely try to incorporate whoever he can to try and compete. The program may not be able to handle a 5 year rebuilding plan. BETTER GET THE NCAA VIOLATION RULEBOOK OUT. I still question if a .500 coach is the right coach to rebuild one of the worst programs in D1, and the dirtiest program in the region. That still kills me...how can you cheat and still SUCK SO BADLY????

-- Posted by gateway-broker on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 11:06 AM

RCIR: I don't think anyone is proclaiming that SLU is a top tier A10 team this season, but I agree with Kdub102002. Most of the posts on here before the first game were very negative toward SLU and Majerus. I myself even feared SLU may have a struggle with SEMO. I think people who follow the SLU program feel like things are looking up, but that it would take half the schedule for these young kids to jell. I believe his is one of the 3 youngest teams in D1---and to see them come out and mop up the floor with a Big 12 school is something to get a little excited about (hope they don't lay an egg against the cupcakes coming up). You said "Yea and we all know Nebraska is a basketball school, right"? Nebraska won 18 games last season which is about where SEMO will be over the next 2-3 seasons. I would say Nebraska and Arkansas State are probably about on the same level. The fact is SLU improved alot from game 1 to game 2 (with still alot of work needed). From the posts on here going into the first 2 games of the season for SEMO it seemed like most people thought "this is the game we end the streak"...there's always the next game.

-- Posted by gateway-broker on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 10:57 AM

I'm just glad that the bloggers on here realize we're going to struggle this year. I still think 6-8 wins is about right. Since the OVC is a weak conference, with our work ethic on defense, we should have a chance to win a few handful of games, especially against the lower level teams.

We have a legit D-2 team this year and we certainly have NO offensive threat inside. I hope that with the 2-3 scholarships Nutt has left for next year, he find some legit D-1 big guys (6-8, 6-9) that can actually score.

I don't know much about the player that we signed last week, other than he's 6-9 and his numbers are less than impressive, but Nutt obviously sees something in the guy. So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and wait and see how he pans out.

I just hope that people aren't too quick to criticize Nutt this year, because it's going to be a rough season. But I'll bet money we get between 12-15 wins next season, not even know who Nutt is recruitng. Assuming Leon Powell is back 100% and Nutt can find some legit post players, I think we'll be fine next year.

It's getting thru this year that wil be tough on all of us.

Oral Roberts goes into Stanford and wins last night, on a buzzer beater by starting PG Roderick Pearson. Good for him! I understand why he left, but sure wish he had stayed.

-- Posted by bam-bam on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 10:12 AM

The team didn't play well last night, and when you are a bad team and you don't play well, it's pretty ugly. There will be nights when the team plays better, hopefully we can catch somebody sleeping on that night.

I think there is a legitimate point on both sides of the scholarship argument. Does anyone know if we are looking at Kenny Harris or Jesse Perry from John A Logan? Either/both of those guys would be immediate impact players in the OVC, and I'm pretty sure they are both from St Louis.

Big thanks to kfvs12 for broadcasting the game. Being able to watch the game for us out-of-towners is really cool.

Semoredhawk: 9 out of the 15 players on the roster are Juniors or Seniors. I don't think he has married himself to too many guys long term. Out of the five who will be here more than two years, one is his son (a walk on). Another is Banks, an invited walk-on. I think Thompson (FR) has already proven that he will be a legit OVC player and I think Marland Smith (also FR) was worth a scholarship. That gets us up to 13 of the 15. Watson and Miles remain. Watson is playing a lot of minutes.

Nutt basically handicapped himself one year. He gave a lot of schollies out last year and won't have a whole lot to give this year, unless some players aren't invited back. I think it was a choice he had to make.

We have seven juniors right now. 6 of those will be gone after next season. Powell hopefully has two more seasons since he won't play this year. How Nutt replaces those six juniors will go a long way in determining his success.

KDub, I'll admit I didn't think they were any good, but I was impressed with that. I watched a little bit of that last night and they looked good. First games are always hard to tell. Looks like RickMa is getting the kids he wants in there.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 9:15 AM

SS, I love the Black Helicopter!! That's great. Reminds me of an old Limbaugh paradoy of Ross Perot.. "They're coming to take me away.."

Being serious, I don't think he has 5 years to turn this thing around. He's only got a 4 year contract, and let's be honest, they are not going to extend it unless real progress is being made. In all honesty, he's got next year to get some talent in, and then his third year, I'm guessing is his eval year. The problem is he married himself to 11 guys, who might be marginal DI players. It might have been better to save a few scholly's. How many of these kids only get 1 year deals? Bringing in only three kids next year isn't going to solve the problem, unless you can find some sharpshooter. Where is Jimmy Chipwood when we need him?

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 9:13 AM

Yea and we all Nebraska is a basketball school, right?

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 8:47 AM

A little off the subject, SLU waxed Nebraska last night and looked really good doing it, a few of you who said they are terrible may be a little off in your evaluation. Only one way for SEMO to fix a bad offense, and that is better players.

GIVE IT A REST TIDAL!!!! EVERYONE KNOWS YOUR VIEWS ON THE ADMINISTRATION. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REPEAT THEM EVERY POST!!!! I'M SURE YOU SEE BLACK HELICOPTERS CIRCLING THE SHOW ME CENTER ALSO. YOUR WHINNING MORE THAN A 6MO. OLD BABY.

We do not have D1 talent....I think Nutt did a good job in putting this team together - based on the circumstances...

He was hired as Head Coach very late in the recruiting season....Why?

He had a very late start in recruiting....Why?

It took forever and a day for him to get a coaching staff....Why?

He has a very inexperience coaching staff....Why?

He was trying to recruit players to a program that only won 3 games last year...Why?

He had to follow Edgar that destroyed our program and should have never been hired....Why?

..I think Nutt has done a fine job based on the circumstances.....I only wish he would have came after Garner...I believe with his style of play - that team had enough talent to win the OVC...Who knows and Who cares...it didn't happen....so here we are with a good coach and a team with very limited talent...Nutt has to stay the course and talent will come....I just hope he is allowed to stay the course....As he becomes popular and gains starts to gain power from the public (Public Opinion) - I wish him well...Obstacles will be placed in front of him....

As for losing this game....What did you expect....A paycheck and a butt wooping was the administration's goal....more money for the rainy day fund....lol

-- Posted by TIDAL on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 6:44 AM

So how do we fix the problem of no offense?

-- Posted by RCIR on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 6:37 AM

Hey at least we are UP to 29.5% from the field after tonights game. Honestly I will be surprised if we shoot much better than 35% from the field on the season. That won't win ANY games... we aren't going to have a choice but to win a couple with defense.

-- Posted by semo99grad on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:59 AM

I couldnt have put it better Marty. This team will be fine as time goes by. The fans just need to be patient and support the program while it comes back from the abyss.

-- Posted by asuato on Thu, Nov 19, 2009, at 1:10 AM

It's gonna take a while to build the team back up. Call it year 1 of a 5 year rebuilding plan. But I do have confidence that SEMO men's basketball is on the mend and that Nutt is the man to cure us.
