Expect Samuel to retain coaching position

Posted Sunday, November 22, 2009, at 9:52 PM

Sources tell me that SEMO football coach Tony Samuel will be retained by the university for a fifth season in 2010. SEMO is expected to make an official announcement about that soon.

The Redhawks finished the fourth year of Samuel's five-year contract with a 2-9 record after Saturday's 42-24 loss to top-ranked SIU.

Meanwhile, sources also tell me that offensive coordinator Vincent White -- who has been with Samuel during his entire tenure at SEMO -- won't be back. I don't know if there will be other changes made within Samuel's staff.

As for what happened on the field Saturday, SEMO put together an impressive showing in making the powerful Salukis (10-1) work for their 10th straight win.

SEMO's offense came alive the final two games of the season. If it can carry that into next year then I think there is a realistic possibility for a solid season because the 2009 Redhawks really weren't that far off from posting quite a few more victories.

Glad to hear Coach Samuel will be retained. I hope Coach White is able to find a nice job for he and his family. He is truly one of the nicest persons that you will ever meet. Was a great college player and is even a better man. Good luck to Coach White and his family.

Marty Mishow's response:
I agree that coach White is a real class act. The same goes for coach Samuel.

Well, since he had a year on his K, any "official" announcement probably means he got a year extension (I'm guessing), so he isn't a lame duck. Can you imagine a 2-9 coach who hasn't had a winning season, getting a year extension. Someone call Alan Ward..lol.

ugh

-- Posted by devin on Sat, Nov 21, 2009, at 10:56 PM

I agree Marty, they really came alive and fought hard the last two games. It was good to see that we put up the most points on SIU out of any FCS opponents they've faced this season and we made them work for the W. I like the way that Scheible played in the last two games even though I haven't been a big fan of his throughout the season. I am with Redhawkfan81 in wishing Coach White the best. And I also think we have a chance at a solid season next year, everything just has to come together and we have to play like we did in these last two games. Who knows, maybe we'll finally get that video scoreboard! Maybe. lol

Any news on recruiting or guys looking at SEMO?

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sat, Nov 21, 2009, at 11:09 PM

Who would look at Semo knowing the coach is only gonna be there for 1 year? Why sign with a guy that will be gone 9 months after you sign in February? Not to mention an offensive coordinator that will most likely only be here for 1 year too. What kind of offensive player would sign with us now? I'll tell you who, one that nobody else wanted.

This decision doesn't make sense from a program perspective.

-- Posted by gomer on Sat, Nov 21, 2009, at 11:21 PM

I'm not terribly surprised by that. Money is tight for everyone and the athletic department doesn't exactly have the cash flow to dump right now..

I was really pleased with how the guys came out and played hard today. Is it any different than any other game? No not really. These guys battled all year and for some reason, things clicked today. It didn't quite turn out as we'd like, but the Redhawks came out and showed our neighbors that it isn't a walk in the park.

This was really a disappointing season and I think especially after last year this season was just awful. Not much positive to come out of it really. Last year we went 4-8 with many close games that came down to the wire. This year we went 2-9 with not so many close games. We took a step backwards.

Another year of football in the bag here at Southeast. Time to build in every aspect of the game: in the weight room, the playbooks, coaching adjustments, administration adjustments, facility upgrades, etc. Fortunately for Redhawk fans, football will return in 9 months and here's to hoping to see a better product take the field!

I hope to god he don't get an extension.

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Nov 21, 2009, at 11:31 PM

gomer, you sure like jumping on people for the smallest things. I simply asked if anyone was possibly looking at SEMO, not why they are, or why they should or shouldn't, or anything else. There will be kids eventually. And you ask why someone would look at a program when the coach is only gonna be there for one year? Well where's your $50,000? Would you like to buy out the rest of Samuel's contract? You know what, go to Shafer, ask for his job, and we'll see what you can do when you're in the spot he's in. Give it a rest gomer.....

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 1:19 AM

No one jumped on you, this time.

I'd do a better job than Shafer any day of the week and twice on Sundays. Or if you meant Samuel - I wouldn't make a very good football coach, that's why I didn't apply for the job the last time around. But I know a bad one when I see one.

I'm not giving $50k for this particular cause, that's a bad investment. I've given plenty this calendar year, and plenty times 20 over the past 20 years. When you get out of school, will you donate to the university?

I'm not giving anything a rest - by god I don't like what's going on at my alma mater, and I'll be darned if some johnny-come-lately student, that doesn't know the first thing about Semo athletics prior to August 2009, is gonna make me stop.

-- Posted by gomer on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 2:03 AM

Looks like my earlier prediction was on target: The OC gets the ax-Samuel survives dues to $ issues-even though a clean sweep would probably be best for the program, in my opinion. The Hawks played with heart-especially the defense. Keep in mind that SIU did not go with a full complement of their starters from the git-go during virtually the entire game. Their humanitarian gesture to take a knee at the end of the game was sportsmanlike. I was disappointed, but not surprised, at the number of penalties (especially personal fouls) by some of Samuel's "thugs". To Gomer's point-with all the correctible problems in the program unaddressed, you are left with thugs, mediocre talent, jc misfits-everyone else's "leftovers". Next season should be better-philosophically, couldnt be much worse, eh?

-- Posted by Bearcat66 on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 8:11 AM

I'll admit, I'm not the biggest semo fb guy in the world, but some of you are doing the Garner thing. If the effort is there, that is a positive reflection on the staff. Wow. Great they played hard. Samuel is still a 2-9 coach in the 4th year of his contract. I could see if he had 1 winning season, but he has not had one yet. Posh tosh effort.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 10:41 AM

Its not about Winning....its about the Revenue

......besides, SE can only pay so many coaches not to coach....

-- Posted by TIDAL on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 12:26 PM

Here is the reality- with the advent of the internet every kid will know Samuel lame Duck status. 1 yr contract almost assures him to be out the door. Hey SEMO came up with 300K to get rid of their basketball Coach, If your Samuel you demand another extension or leave. Billins left and got an Assitants job that paid him more than what he was making at SEMO. If the University can't see itself to give him an extension then they need to come up with the 50K and tell him goodbye.

-- Posted by Former Indian on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 12:35 PM

All indications I get on Samuel is that he is a great person and I'm glad he is being retained. I hate to see anyone lose his/her job in today's economy. Don't blame him or his staff.

Bottom line, football is NOT a priority at the university now, and it wasn't 4 years ago when he was hired. If it were, you wouldn't hire a coach with a career 34-57 record.

-- Posted by 4dakidz on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 1:44 PM

Is the basketball game on the radio anywhere? k103 isn't streaming it apparently.

-- Posted by bam-bam on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 3:45 PM

SEMO looks good in the first half.. up 7 at the half.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 4:32 PM

You can watch it on the internet for free at

channelsurfing.net SEMO up 30-23 at the half

SS, you should really keep that site to yourself. If it gets shut down.. I'll be peeved..lol.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 4:35 PM

haha..their pbp guy is talking over the radio feed.. Feed: of course the bears are playing tonight.. PBP: 'who cares'.."

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 4:42 PM

But I'm such a giving person semoredhawk. NIU went 9-19 from the FT line the first half. It's more of a case of NIU playing bad.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 4:47 PM

12!!

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 4:50 PM

We may do it!!!

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 5:36 PM

Why did't they foul there?

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 5:38 PM

SEMO WINS SEMO WINS OMG SEMO WINS

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 5:52 PM

Great win tonight

-- Posted by rjenks7 on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 5:55 PM

Congrats to Coach Nutt on his first win at SEMO.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 5:57 PM

Semo had never won a road game against a MAC conference team before today. Awesome job Coach Nutt and the players!

-- Posted by boomerang on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:03 PM

Didn't see this one coming!!

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:14 PM

Great job Coach Nutt. Congratulations on your first win at SEMO. Way to get the guys ready to face an MAC opponent after losing the way we did against ASU. It was good to see the guys keep at it, all the way into overtime. And 19 points from Derek Thompson, he really is a baller. Great job, great job.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:22 PM

Yeah RCIR...I didnt see NIU missing 17 free Throws either lol....Go Redhawks...

-- Posted by RedShirt on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:24 PM

Winning feels like this . . . nice.

-- Posted by redhawk04 on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:25 PM

I know NIU's poor play may be partly responsible for the win, but it's a non-conference win, Nutt's first win, and a W. It feels good to win.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:32 PM

Here you go Air Force ****As Semo now hands them the longest D1 losing streak****

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:43 PM

I'd like to think some of NIU's poor play was the result of good play by SEMO. I mean SEMO really blocks out well/ which results in good rebounding. Missing FT's is part of the game.

That might be the best road win by a SEMO team since they went to Bradley and beat then in 98

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:45 PM

Just for laughs.. Spoonhour defeated Dean by 14 tonight..lol. Spoonhour goes to 8-1, the guy can't coach a lick though.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:47 PM

Can we get Dick Nutt to coach the football team too?

-- Posted by RedShirt on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:47 PM

Well time for basketball season. Wow, I sure didn't see us beating NIU. Nice win.

-- Posted by Showstopper on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 6:48 PM

We host Eastern Michigan Tuesday. Eastern Michigan plays Missouri State tonight with tip-off set for 8:00.

This is EMU's 3rd game in 3 days as they are playing in some round robin 3-day event @ Missouri State along with the Citadel and Maryland Eastern Shore (whoever the hell that is).

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 7:41 PM

RCIR, are you sure that Air Force has the longest D1 losing streak now?

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 8:40 PM

I googled the question "longest current d1 losing streak mens basketball" and that is the answer wikianswers gave me!

It makes sense cuz AF didn't win a conference game last year (sounds familiar) and they don't have a D1 win yet this year either.

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 9:04 PM

That's kind of interesting because Air Force was in the NCAA tournament just a couple years ago I believe.

-- Posted by redhawkstudent on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 9:26 PM

RCIR;

http://www.goairforcefalcons.com/sports/...

Air Force beat Colorado State in the opening round of the Mountain West Conference tournament last year. It's only been 4 games since they beat a D1 opponent.

But you're right, they didn't win a conference game last year...at least we weren't the only ones! lol

-- Posted by dominicstl on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 10:18 PM

Dom- I noticed that also but the new streak still beongs to AF. I guess the answer I found was regular season only which is still AF!

-- Posted by RCIR on Sun, Nov 22, 2009, at 11:25 PM

Well I called the OC deal 2 weeks ago. Glad to see others finally realized it and now it came from a media outlet.

While I don't agree with the 1-year extension for Samuel, I certainly understand why it happened.

But just maybe, these last 2 games along with a new OC, will help jump start things next year and we'll win 5-7 games. We were certainly close this year.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 12:08 AM

Keeping this in perspective, or not. But if Samuel gets a year extension to his contract, that mean he would be SEMO's coach until about three weeks before the 2012 Iowa Caucus.lol. Why they would make a promise to him for 2011 is beyond me. They wouldn't even give Garner that extra year 2006. I'd rather just not fire him, and let him finish his deal, but to give him an extra year, makes no sense to me. This sounds like coaches for clunkers or something..

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 6:42 AM

RCIR is wrong.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_has_the_cu...

They count the conference tourney win for Depaul therefore the win for AF in the conference tourney has to count also.

redhawks07: nice job, you broke the news that a man with a family would lose him job 2 weeks before anyone else. Odds are good that someone who knew Coach White heard the news on this blog first rather than from him, if he has even been informed yet. You have no class.

-- Posted by Counter Top on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 6:45 AM

If Samuel gets an extension, does this mean that Shafer punted, and that he doesn't plan on being around come the time when he has to decide on a new fb coach? I'm totally shocked by this.

-- Posted by iffythedopester on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 9:04 AM

I'm trying to figure out why a member of the Board of Regents is talking about personnel issues with the general public, namely redhawks07. Personnel issues are always in closed session, not open session. I thought those issues were private, so why is a Regent blabbing to some internet bozo?

-- Posted by gomer on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 3:43 PM

Gomer: I actually heard it from many other people more than 2 weeks ago that it was a done deal. It happens. People get word of breaking news long before anyone on here does.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 4:47 PM

http://espn.go.com/chicago/story?id=4681...

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 6:43 PM

A member of the board probably shouldn't be discussing closed door information with non university personnel, because of course some yahoo is going to attribute their name to it as fact, when it may not be.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 6:45 PM

Won't giving him a 1 yr extension actually hurt recruiting more than just letting him coach his last year? A 1 yr extension effectively kills recruiting for the next 2 years instead of just this year doesn't it?

-- Posted by bam-bam on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 8:50 PM

bam-bam,

I didn't think of it like that. While I don't think it kills us entirely, it is a very good point.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 9:25 PM

This isn't a done deal yet, this site is usually dead on..

http://www.footballscoop.com/?cat=24

Southeast Missouri: Marty Mishow of the Cape Girardeau newspaper says that his sources tell him, head coach Tony Samuel will return, but that Samuel is expected to make a change on the offensive side of the ball. FootballScoop, however, has just confirmed that SEMO is still evaluating the situation. Samuel does have a contract that runs through next season.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Mon, Nov 23, 2009, at 9:32 PM

If Shafer punts, then Dobbins called the play. Dobbins is very politically correct. Yeh, either way if Samuel stays (for 1 or an extention of 1) the program is in default. I am not convinced how well they recruit anyway, BUT, he doesnt have a lot of attractive toys in his gift bag to offer potential recruits due to all the underlying problems we are aware of ad nauseum...the guys history is bad, and, the "woods are full of good guys and good coaches..." Bear Bryant; Dan Devine; Mike Ditka; Vince Lombardi were good coaches FIRST. Dont really know if any were "good guys." I would say the odds in Vegas would favor Limbaugh being the local "reagent"/deep throat....

-- Posted by Bearcat66 on Tue, Nov 24, 2009, at 9:57 AM

I'd love to see SEMO go after a guy like Shawn Jackson. This guy was the recruiting coordinator at Mizzou and has connections all up and down I-55. His offenses at Lindenwood and also in the high school ranks have put up astronomical numbers.

-- Posted by herbsmith on Thu, Nov 26, 2009, at 7:07 AM

According to FootballScoop, Willie Fritz from UCM is a candidate for the Sam Houston job and he put his name in when it was up for grabs in 05. Wish SEMO could get a guy like him in here.

-- Posted by dominicstl on Fri, Nov 27, 2009, at 9:39 AM

Was there going to be an announcement one way or the other? I assumed that if he was staying without an extension, there would be no announcement; nothing to see here. You only need an announcement if he's leaving or extended.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Fri, Nov 27, 2009, at 10:49 AM

Denver Johnson back to Murray?

Marshall is looking for a HC. Wonder if Billings will try that?
