SEMO men have little margin for errorPosted Sunday, January 3, 2010, at 12:53 PM
The SEMO men's basketball team has little margin for error this season since coach Dickey Nutt's rebuilding Redhawks likely aren't going to be as talented as most squads they face.
That's why the Redhawks can't afford to dig themselves a big early hole, as was the case Saturday against Tennessee Tech when the Eagles scored 16 of the first 18 points and never trailed in an 82-73 victory. It certainly appeared to be a winnable game for SEMO (4-9, 1-2), which makes Monday's contest with Jacksonville State (5-7, 1-1) that closes out a two-game homestand even more important. The Redhawks got off to a solid OVC start by splitting their first two conference games on the road. Facing three straight contests away from home after this one, SEMO really needs a win to stamp itself as a legitimate contender to make the OVC tournament. While SEMO men lost Saturday, the women notched their first OVC victory, 61-56 over Tennessee Tech. The young Redhawks (4-8, 1-2) should have a strong opportunity to even their conference record Monday when struggling Jacksonville State (3-9, 0-2) visits the Show Me Center. I agree with you.
with that said - I like what I see. Those kids fought back against a team that had more talent and was knocking big shot after big shot down...and it wasn't from lack of defense....I thought our kids worked hard... Need to step up at the free throw line.... if your going to come back on a team...you have to score when the clock is stopped.... we didn't.... Pearson is the man... I really like him and Smith... I still think we need a big time point guard...
Why does Kirk not play more?
We need a big man. What team don't..lol Our offense is not too good... We have trouble scoring at times... I like the offense itself...I guess we just don't have the weapons right now....you add a player that can get to the rim (maybe 2) and a post presence.....I think this team could compete for a Top 4 spot in the OVC....
I'm not saying that we don't have anybody that can drive to the rim...but we don't have any ankle breakers either...same with the post....we have some post presence...just need more..especially on the boards and defense...
We need Bobby Hatchet....if we get him....OVC Championship will come soon....mark my word..
TIDAL: How are we gonna get Hatchet? Offer you a coaching job?
We need Hatchett, obviously. But for the short term, we need Butler to stay out foul trouble.
We need anyone that is as good at the Guard spot for the future. He doesn't have to be named Hatchett. I could personally care less where these kids come from, as long as they can play. I am tired of seeing Semo fans w h o r e themselves out for local kids. We didn't get Michael Porter and they didn't shut the program down.
RCIR you are correct. We need a really good OVC pg like Hatchett could be.
I don't think Nutt has two-three years to wait on Hatchett. He will have to have this program winning by then. I'm just saying, he's got to get a solid PG next year. I'm pretty sure this isn't going to be a let's wait 4-5 years to give Nutt time to build a program type of thing. I like where it is headed, don't get me wrong, but with budgets the way they are, people just won't be that patient. (Of course I'm going with the popular notion that the kid being mentioned will be in a JUCO environment for a couple of years).
RCIR,
Have you seen Bobby Hatchet play? It has nothing to do with local guy. He is the best high school point guard around. Its not even close. Hatchet could average 10points a game in the OVC right now.
As for Nutt willing to wait for Bobby. Nutt told me, Ronnie, and several other coaches that he would give a finger for Bobby Hatchet. He told us that Bobby is the best point guard that he had seen in 20 years.
The only way we get him - he comes here for a year and then plays. He will end up in JUCO - but not for long. IL. State may get him.
Theres no way we get Otto Porter.. and before anybody writes this "Local" nonsense again...Have you seen Otto play?...nothing to do with local - the kid is going to a major D1 Program...
Tidal,
By Major D-1 program do you mean Kentucky, UNC, Kansas or Iowa State, Mississippi, Vandy?
Yes, I have seen them both play. Very skilled athletically, but they both lack some basics for the game at this point. Little defense is being played by both and they are more worried about dunks than intangibles of the game like blocking out, screening, and playing good defense. This will catch up with them with a very disciplined team later in the season.
Tidal, so even if Nutt thinks that, what is he going to do? Scratch his rear and pick his nose while waiting for the kid to get DI eligible? Doubt it. If he is as good as you say he is, in two years, SEMO won't be in the ballpark to sign him.
No need to discuss anymore. Time will tell.
harleyman, I don't necessarily disagree, although I don't think they are "worried" about dunking; when you're 6'7 or you're an incredible jumper who gets several breakaways, it's going to happen.
And I don't see anybody slowing them down this year.
Harley, I bet Bobby has more steals than anyone in the area. He plays great D. Name a disciplined team that will slow them down later in the season.
If you only watch Bobby at the Christmas Tournament - then you may think that he does not play defense....he didn't have too
I've seen him play approx. 30 - 40 games...he is an awesome defender...one of the best around..
The reason I did not argue the point before - plain and simple - I knew the person had no idea of what they were talking about or was base their opinion off watching one or two games of the Christmas Tournament. I told several of my coaching peers about the comment that he could not play defense....we all had a big laugh.
As for nut waiting and picking his butt and nose - You bet Nutt would wait.....
By Major D1 Program - I mean a program that is currently in the top 30. - Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, etc....
SIU wants Bobby Hatchet and Otto Porter very bad....Chris L. was at the tournament. They are really going after Porter.
I'll second that TIDAL. One play that sticks out in my mind is last year in the state championship game....Newtown-Harris inbounded the ball on SCC's end of the court. There were 3 NH players in the backcourt, plus Bobby. Bobby ended up with a steal and an easy layup with NH never getting the ball past the opponent 3 point line.
I've never seen a point guard with such quick hands. He can steal your rock in a heartbeat. His footwork is very fundamentally sound.
I was a little disapointed with his play in the Xmas Tournament. He was basically playing at about 80%. The thing about it - he was still better than anybody on the floor. I notice that SCC has let up a little this year. In the past, under Ronnie, they never let up - beat you in the ground. This year, they seem to have a little heart - they only beat you by 25 or so.
He was a beast in that State Championship game - once again - nobody was even close to him....
Nice win!!
It is so nice to go to the Show Me Center and see the HOME TEAM play with more effort than the opponent. The result was great, the effort was even better.
We looked very good. I really like what I see.... The offense is starting to click... We are getting to the rim and taking high percentage shots. When you do that - you get to the line.. We have to improve at the line...
Butler came up big and knock down 6 free throws in a row, but he needs work on his shot. Watch his feet when he shoots free throws.. He is almost on his tip toes - its so hard to remain balance and get the full use of your legs... He needs to make an adjustment in his footwork..
Anyways, Free Throws is about confidence... You can work on them all day long in practice and shoot bricks in the game...must be relaxed and confident....
Please don't take this the wrong way... Have you guys notice how much faster we are in transition without Nutt running the point... We are extremely fast at getting the ball down the court...I'm really liking our transition play...
With that said - We are finally scoring with our defense...turn-overs to points....and moving from defense into transition into a shot around the basket has greatly improved...
I was sitting by two close friends last night...I made the comment - its a good sign when the kids on the bench are jumping and yelling and being so positive...just really in the game... They both agreed 100%... I see Kirk on the bench with no playing time, yet he is smiling and rooting his team to victory... Thats a good sign of strong leadership and unity of the team....
I'm really liking this guard rotation....Add another athletic guard (similar to Michael Stokes) to this team.....We need more post play - but its getting better..
oh yeah - never know who you may run in too...in the restroom...LOL
I was thinking the same thing about McCrary (spelling?), Tidal. No matter what, he is always cheering on his teammates and making sure the bench is doing the same. He seems to always be the first one off the bench to greet his mates during a timeout. Teams need players like him just as much as five starters. Any word on Derek Thompson?
how about dd gillespie for a viable candidate for PG he is doing a fine job at Shawnee and John Sparks has that program playing really well.
