Impressive bounce-back win for SEMO

Posted Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 10:02 AM

The SEMO men's basketball team had an impressive bounce-back performance Monday night, beating Jacksonville State 78-66 just two days after losing to Tennessee Tech 82-73.

SEMO finally got off to a good start at home as the Redhawks led wire to wire. They made an early emphasis to get the ball inside and kept doing that much of the game, which was evidenced by their shooting a season-high 45 free throws.

SEMO made only 27 from the stripe -- free throws have been a problem all year -- but shot them well late to close out the Gamecocks.

Salvaging one win on the two-game homestand was big for the Redhawks, who, although it's still early, look like they'll make a strong push to get into the OVC tournament.

Tell the truth, when the season started how many people thought SEMO would be 2-2 through four OVC games? I sure didn't, but Dickey Nutt has the Redhawks playing pretty well and extremely hard at all times, something I have been very impressed with.

I really like the attitude of the team, even guys on the bench who have seen little to no action lately but appear as enthusiastic and supportive of their teammates as the ones who are logging major minutes.

These next three games on the road will be tough for SEMO, beginning Saturday at Eastern Illinois and continuing the following week at Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. All three squads are 3-1 in the OVC, right behind 3-0 Murray State.

We looked very good. I really like what I see.... The offense is starting to click... We are getting to the rim and taking high percentage shots. When you do that - you get to the line.. We have to improve at the line...

Butler came up big and knock down 6 free throws in a row, but he needs work on his shot. Watch his feet when he shoots free throws.. He is almost on his tip toes - its so hard to remain balance and get the full use of your legs... He needs to make an adjustment in his footwork..

Anyways, Free Throws is about confidence... You can work on them all day long in practice and shoot bricks in the game...must be relaxed and confident....

Please don't take this the wrong way... Have you guys notice how much faster we are in transition without Nutt running the point... We are extremely fast at getting the ball down the court...I'm really liking our transition play...

With that said - We are finally scoring with our defense...turn-overs to points....and moving from defense into transition into a shot around the basket has greatly improved...

I was sitting by two close friends last night...I made the comment - its a good sign when the kids on the bench are jumping and yelling and being so positive...just really in the game... They both agreed 100%... I see Kirk on the bench with no playing time, yet he is smiling and rooting his team to victory... Thats a good sign of strong leadership and unity of the team....

I'm really liking this guard rotation....Add another athletic guard (similar to Michael Stokes) to this team.....We need more post play - but its getting better..

oh yeah - never know who you may run in too...in the restroom...LOL

Marty Mishow's response:
Who'd you run in to in the restroom - okay, just to let everyone in on the secret, it was me (lol).

Getting to the rim...

Inside / Out Basketball

High % Shots

Ball & Player Movement

Fundamental Defense

Work without the ball

.................

This team is doing all of the above... I have been crying about the lack these things for four years or so... I've taking a lot of heat on here for being too critical and everything else... When actually, I was just calling it as I seen it based on a coaching mentality.....I'm in hog heaven watching this team... Even if they lose - they are fun to watch because they play basketball like it should be played... The have some problems - but they are improving.. Give Coach Nutt some more talent....he has the right formula - just need more talent..

"Million Dollar Shot" - a high% shot taking around the basket, sometimes referred as a layup, drop step, or two-foot jumper.

Our offense needs to be focused on getting the Million Dollasr Shot. Sound Familiar... Go back and read the basketball post over the past four years....

Google is cool for finding interesting facts... Looks like LaQuentin Miles's team (Jacksonville, Ark.) beat Marland Smith's team (Little Rock-Hall, Ark) in the Arkansas class 6A state championship game last year by one point. I wonder if they guarded one another?

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Tue, Jan 5, 2010, at 1:43 PM

Rumor has it that Miles & Smith may not have been the only future Redhawks in that game.

I am guessing, Devin, that you're talking about McClure.

A was at SEMO from '04-'08 which was not a great time for Men's basketball. I'm working in St. Louis now and have been following this team pretty close including watching a few on the kfvs webcast. Coach Nutt is doing a great job with the talent he has and as Marty has said the team is fun to watch. They really seem to buy into Nutt's system and play hard for him.

Everyone up here in STL thinks I'm crazy because I am so excited about them being 2-2 in OVC play. That's a big step from a year ago and even though they were manhandled early by TTU they showed tenacity and made the game respectable which would not have been the case in the past. As a member of the basketball band for 4 years I saw Tech hand our you know whats to us a few times.

Hopefully if the team continues to play with heart every night and see's some success the crowds will start to grow at the Show Me Center. I always thought that place had the potential to be and opponents worst nightmare if it were packed.

One thing I really like about coach Nutt, besides his teaching of fundimentals, is the way he holds the players accountable. Like holding Derek Thompson out of the last game because he wanted to see more out of him in practices. This isn't a knock on the players. It's not like they are visibly goofing off in practice. If that were the case then holy hxxl would break loose. Coach Nutt knows how good each player CAN be. He won't let them settle for anything less than that and he expects to see it every day, in practice and the games. If you had a son and wanted him to learn the game and become the best he can be at it I now think that SEMO would be a great choice for him.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 7:27 AM

SS: You know for a fact thats why Derek's playing time has been limited lately or is that a guess?

-- Posted by RCIR on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 8:37 AM

RCIR - that's basically what Nutt said in the radio show

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 8:39 AM

As long as it doesn't become a dogmatic doghouse where a kid can't work his way out of. We saw a lot of that from 1997-2006. Nutt seems more of a send a message type coach, than actually putting a kid in the "hut" never to be heard from again. That was one of my biggest problems with the former coach, was that once a kid messed up either on the floor or off, that a lot of times the kid was finished. Guys like Demarcus Hence come to mind.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 9:38 AM

I don't think Nutt is that way. I think Maxwell is a perfect example amd Hill is also. Nutt basucally said after the Peay game they could have used Maxwell but he needed more effort in practice. Maxwell has been starting since then. Hill has'nt been playing Nutt comented on how much weight he has lost and he just started. I like what Nutt is doing. I think it will help build the program in the long run. I'm sure it would have been great to have Thompson's scoring out there. This team plays hard amd with heart. Thats great to see.

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 10:10 AM

Semoredhawk

Nutt isn't like that at all. His doghouse doesn't really have the same meaning that we're used to. He's very supportive and straightforward with the players. He lets them know exactly what he expects out of them and what they need to do to get playing time. Take Derek for example. Everyone knows he's a shooter. Nutt want's him to become a much better defender so he becomes more than just a threat to score. He wan't Johnny to be a shutdown defender. He knows he has the ability to if he'll just push himself. He will not let the players settle for being average. To me the players are thriving on that because they all know he wants them to be the best that they can be. He is the complete opposite of Edger.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 11:32 AM

When Nutt carefully explained why Thompson wasn't seeing as many minutes, he also said that we can expect the minutes to increase. He also took the time to say that Thompson is the future of the program and said he was really proud of Thompson's work in the classroom.

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 11:45 AM

Fans (including myself) never have all the information. As of Demarcus Hence - the fans only know that he was in the dog house. Do you think a coach is going to tell the entire story on the radio and newspaper? Yes, a coach will most of the time - if it has to do with strickly basketball or effort. In Demarcus case, there was so much more. Any coach in their right mind would have done the same - if they new all the facts. The kid is gone, so there is no need air his dirty laundry - and the Coach wasn't about to do it either.

Question - Can you Name all the players that was in the "Dog House" and never came out of it between 1997 and 2006?

"As long as it doesn't become a dogmatic doghouse where a kid can't work his way out of." ---- that is such a broad statement...back it up with a list of names.

...............

Anyways - I like Nutt's style. I think you have to be straight forward with kid. Let him know exactly what you expect back it up with playing time. Kids will respect you - if they know what is expected. Results will follow...

-- Posted by TIDAL on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 11:53 AM

As long as it doesn't become a dogmatic doghouse where a kid can't work his way out of. We saw a lot of that from 1997-2006.

You stated "a lot"....

Back it up with a list of names.

-- Posted by TIDAL on Wed, Jan 6, 2010, at 11:56 AM

I don't think Demarcus was ever in the doghouse, he just didn't play hard, or do the little things it took to win. Now in my opinion we would have still been better with him than our other options, but that was a difference of opinion between coaches. He showed flashes of brillance, but it was always on the offensive end, never defensively or rebounding, the two biggest things determining wether or not a team wins. And his playing time reflected it. Now if you want to call that the doghouse, I guess you could, but I didn't see it that way.

Good for Semo I guess........

Strowbridge leaves Gamecocks

Jacksonville State's already limited basketball roster took a hit Wednesday when junior guard Jay-R Strowbridge left the team for what Gamecocks coach James Green called "personal reasons."

Second semester classes at JSU began Wednesday.

The Gamecocks' numbers already were limited by APR scholarship sanctions, and walkon guard Samir Rolley is out with a knee injury.

Green declined to elaborate on the nature of the decision or the impact it would have on a club.

"What's always been my philosophy is we play with who we have on any given night, in any given year." he said.

When asked who gets more playing time following Strowbridge's departure, Green said "everybody." The Gamecocks now have eight available players on their roster.

Strowbridge, a Huntsville product, regained his eligibility this season after transferring from Nebraska. He played his first college game in 20 months in the Gamecocks' exhibition with West Georgia.

He was the Gamecocks' third-leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points in 12 games.

semoredhawk,

LOL... You don't have a clue.. Keep making your opinion based on what you read....

You stated:

"As long as it doesn't become a dogmatic doghouse where a kid can't work his way out of. We saw a lot of that from 1997-2006."

So all those players were in the domatic doghouse and could not work their way out...lol

You are a Garner Basher...lol

Your the guy that was riding Edgar's nutts... It was you that argued how great "Fast & Furious" was going to be.....lol You defended Edgar on here and supported the King - good little bumble bee.... We argue then as well...

Its hard to get the full benefit of watching a game from those web cast....lol

Anyways - I just joking with you a little...no hard feelings...I sure wish boomajug would teach you the game of basketball and give you more advice on what to say...LOL

You come to the games as much as the King...lol

I'm going to send you a membership card to my "I love Garner Fan Club"....

Whatever happen to all those guys that argued how great Edgar was going to be?????

I would like to see SEMO go 2 out of 3 on this road swing but think if they can win one out of the three, which may be very tough, it's a good road swing for the team. I think if this team can qualify for the tournament thats a major step for the program and probably exceeds most peoples expectations before the season started

-- Posted by SemoFan67 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:49 AM

They need to take one out of three. Ideally, looking at the way the schedule set up, I was hoping for wins at home against Tech and Jacksonville, and stealing one of the next three. 2 out of 3 on this road trip would be tremendous. But I think 1 out of 3 would be a success, honestly.

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 10:41 AM

Hey does anyone have a clue of who Coach Nutt is looking at for next year? Other than the 6-9 kid that is already signed, who else does he want?

And speaking of recruits, what about Coach Samuel and his FBall recruits? Isn't is close to the signing day?

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 12:54 PM

Here's the players SEMO's recruiting according to Rivals.com.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/...

-- Posted by Data48 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 1:16 PM

Okay, I've tried this a couple of times and it's not letting me post the link properly. Just go to the banner at the top of the page the bad link takes you to and click on Database. Then highlight Southeast Missouri State in the college choices section. Besides Waylon Jones who signed early they list six other pretty good looking players that SEMO is after, including Abel Tillman who originally signed here but ended up a a JC.

-- Posted by Data48 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 1:25 PM

It will be really interesting to see what kind of kids that Nutt brings in after having a full year to recruit. I hope that we have a chance at Deshone McClure (LaQuentin Miles' teamate in h.s.) and of course a certain pg from SCC.

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:17 PM

Speaking of Waylon Jones . . . the article below said that he was out in the early season to a stress fracture and it was unclear whether he would just sit out until after Christmas or miss the whole season. Question is - if he misses the whole season at JUCO, does that give him 3 years of eligibility at SEMO instead of 2?

http://www.albanytech.edu/index.php?opti...

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:22 PM

redhawks81

Yes, He would then have 3 years and that is what Nutt is hoping for.

-- Posted by semosupporter on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:40 PM

According to this link, Jones has not played yet as of Jan 4th. If he does not play this year I think that means he would have 3 years of eligibility. He would basically be sitting out as a redshirt this year at his Juco.

Meiko Lyles, 6'2 guard from Nashville. This was from October:

http://www.apsugovs.com/2010-recruit-fea...

"Lyles has offers from Missouri State and Georgia State University, the only school he has officially visited. Southeast Missouri State University has shown significant interest, attending every one of his AAU games this summer."

-- Posted by boomerang on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:48 PM

I'm sure there are lots of other recruits that haven't been mentioned. I found this one --

Kyle Clevenger, 6'5 Wing player from Urbana, IL. This is from August - before you click on the link, there is some adult language from a commenter at the very bottom, below the article:

http://midstatehoops.com/v5/2009/08/07/c...

"Detroit has offered me and Southeast Missouri State has pretty much laid an offer on the table as well. I've heard from so many other schools too, Northwestern's one of them. I'd have to look through my phone and mail to tell you everyone."

-- Posted by boomerang on Fri, Jan 8, 2010, at 8:57 PM

Hunter Ward - 6'3 Guard from Kirkwood

From back in August:

http://www.rameybasketball.moonfruit.com...

"Wards breakout summer has him currently being recruited by SEMO, SIUE, Quincy, Drury, Detroit, and San Diego State."

This article talks about Ward breaking his wrist and being out for a few weeks, mentions Murray St as a school recruiting him:

http://www.thekirkwoodcall.com/sports/20...

"multiple colleges such as Murray State and San Diego State are heavily recruiting Ward"

Is this game being played in a college arena? It looks exactly like Jackson's new HS gym. How does a program with facilities like that get so far ahead of us?

-- Posted by bam-bam on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 11:49 AM

bam-bam - How? Well, until the Nutt hiring, our university had basically the worst 15-year stretch in decision-making in the history of Division 1 basketball.

-- Posted by redhawk81 on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 11:59 AM

Miles might be the dumbest player we have. He might be decent, but definitely the DUMBEST.

Butler needs to learn to just shut up and play, and control the temper.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 12:02 PM

The ESPN analyst just made the comment I think everyone has been wanting to hear for a long time - the guy is a former college head coach himself and he just said --

"Dickey Nutt can coach"

That takes some sting away from the game itself, just hearing that.

-- Posted by bam-bam on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 12:05 PM

You should see Martin's gym!!

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 4:15 PM

As a matter of fact you get a chance to see Martins gym this thursday because Tech @ Martin is on ESPNU at 8.

Murray @ Austin Peay is on tonight at 5 on espn2!

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 4:18 PM

Sorry folks. I suppose it was unfair of me to pick on the freshman Miles since our ENTIRE team played poor today.

I still stand by my comment on Butler.

Any idea what our career record is on TV games on the ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU)?? I'm sure it's not good.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 8:18 PM

Wow, this OVC thing is headed for a well-defined top 4, Murray, EKU, EIU, MHS, and everyone else.. SEMO could still find themselves 5th or 6th before it is over.. how interesting.. or maybe it is a well-defined Top 3..EIU, Murray, and MHS.. could SEMO sneak into a 4th seed?

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 8:19 PM

I wouldn't put EIU there yet. They r 4 and 1 right now but their next 3 games are @Mur, @EKU and @Morehead! I will say right now they will drop to 4 and 4.

-- Posted by RCIR on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 8:56 PM

They won't lose all three of those. They win one at DV, and they have one of the better records at Murray than anyone else in recent memory in the OVC. They seem to come up with a win at Murray now and then.. that being said, I think Murray may run the table, unless they have a major letdown.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 9:20 PM

EIU isn't a top 4 team. They're 4-1 and the best team they've played is Austin Peay. The only road win they have is at Tenn. St. WE beat Tenn. St. We just made them look like world beaters today in what was easily our worse game of the year. Right now Murray St. is easily the class of the league with EKU, AP, and Morehead in no particular order in the next three spots.

Redhawks07, Butler doesn't have a bad temper. He's just a very emotional player. You want players to play with emotion but they need to learn how to control it. When Nutt jerked him out of the game and was chewing him out didn't you see his response. "Yes Sir".

-- Posted by semosupporter on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 9:37 PM

For all of the haters, YES I KNOW THIS IS NOT A SLU BOARD...but there's a few people who have considered SLU just slightly ahead of SEMO---The Billikens finally got their prized recruit eligible (IDIOTIC NCAA). The stats don't tell how much his presence seemed to ignite the fans and the team in general. The whole team seemed to play with alot of fire and intensity tonight. This was a great game especially considering WIIIIIIIIILY REEEEEEEEEEEEED was being disciplined and didn't suit up for the game. The Bills got some real nice contributions from alot of guys and Conklin took charge to start the game. GREAT WIN OVER K-STATE FOR MIZZOU TONIGHT, BUT NOW ALL OF THE BRAGGING MIZZOU FANS CAN SHUT UP BECAUSE THE BILLIKENS JUST BEAT A TEAM THAT BEAT THE TIGERS A FEW GAMES AGO! The Richmond Spiders have a RPI of 39 and were 3-1 against the top 50. This was a big win and I'm taking this opportunity to brag a little.

-- Posted by gateway-broker on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 11:20 PM

SS: Yeah it was my bad. I actually think Butler is pretty good player.

And while I know it's good for the team and school to have games on TV, I'd almost rather those games not be televised because we don't play well on TV.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 11:44 PM

Yeah, but we could definitely use a better commercial than that.. One comment I made to my dad as we were watching the game. The difference between EIU's commercial and SEMO's commercial-- EIU had athletics in it at least a little bit; SEMO not one bit. I did get a kick out of Austin Peay's though.

And EIU's arena may not be anything special (yes I call it a high school gym too) but they do so many things better than SEMO. There's a better atmosphere there than at the Show Me Center. I didn't once see the pep band screaming at the SEMO bench or players as our pep band does to the opponents each night. I saw the SEMO-EIU games at EIU last year; gym may not be great, but it was fun though SEMO got beat in both..

-- Posted by redhawkstudent on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 12:19 AM

You're obviously very based. EIU's atmosphere is not better than Semo's, and the students - including the band - are SUPPOSED to yell at the other team. It's what excited students do, whether they are in the band or not. Maybe the next game you are at redhawkstudent you can yell at the other players too - or you can sit there with your hands in your pockets. This isn't high school, yell at the other team, have some fun, etc. Create your own atmosphere, it's what we did when we were in college.

-- Posted by devin on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 10:08 AM

*biased, not based

-- Posted by devin on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 10:09 AM

I went to a EIU-SEMo game back in the domercant and Hill days, and I wouldn't say even back then that their atmosphere was better than SEMO's. It was loud, because it was so small, but SEMO used to be very loud too when we were winning.

And what is wrong with the band yelling at the other team?

As far as EIU not being a top 4 team. We will see. I have no idea, but right now they are in that 3rd slot. Just because Peay is Peay, doesn't mean they are a lock to get a top 4 seed. They may not be as good as they have been in the past.

-- Posted by semoredhawk on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 11:13 AM

Semoredhawk is absolutley correct. 10 years ago, we averaged over 5,000 per game and the atmosphere was unbelievable. Every night the student sections were filled and they made a heck of a lot of noise.

Speaking of crowds, since SIU was down last year and is struggling in the MVC so far this year, their average attendance thru 7 home dates is only 4,865....in a 10,000 seat arena.

Granted, I'd take that 4,865 here at SEMO right now, but for SIU standards, that's way down.

Chris Lowery could be on the hot seat if they don't turn things around. Did anyone see their home loss to Drake last night? Ugly....and Drake lost to SIU-E earlier this year.

I wonder if we could hang with Drake? Of course if would depend on what SEMO team showed up.

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 12:48 PM

bam-bam: I have nothing to say about SIU...BBall or FBall....

-- Posted by redhawks07 on Fri, Jan 1, 2010, at 6:11 PM

I'm surprised you were able to hold out for 9 days, that's 8 days longer than I thought you could.

-- Posted by bam-bam on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 12:56 PM

I was at the game. The gym was small but would be pretty loud if it were full. The band was on our team (not that I care, I just saw a comment that their band wasnt yelling at our players). I don't know that there were any students there other than the band (may be on break though). One other thing I noticed is that EIU does many more things during the timeout's to keep the crowd involved. Games with kids, shooting contests, etc....seemed like there was something at almost every time out. I was really impressed by their team, very disciplined and really worked to get their shot. I don't think we played as bad as many are suggesting, we got beat by a team that was executing on all cylinders.
