SEMO teams continue to battle injuries

Posted Thursday, January 21, 2010, at 10:33 AM

SEMO junior forward Cameron Butler will miss his third straight game with a foot injury when the Redhawks host Tennessee-Martin Thursday night.

Butler, SEMO's No. 2 scorer and rebounder, is expected to also miss several more contests after an MRI revealed some ligament damage.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, the Redhawks have a third key injury as freshman forward Bailie Roberts won't play against Tennessee-Martin because of a foot problem that could also sideline her for a few more games. Roberts is SEMO's No. 2 scorer and top 3-point shooter.

SEMO's women are already without freshman guard Jasmine Davis and junior wing Lauren Sharpe, the squad's No. 1 and No. 3 scorers. Davis is definitely out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Sharpe is almost certain to miss the rest of the year with back problems.

I kind of feel bad for UTM, SEMO had an excuse for going O'fer in the OVC with all the problems the past two years. I fully believe (and said it all last year) that BC was going to be out regardless of his "issues". Right now, UTM is just a flat out bad team. They had no plan post Lester?? Regardless, good win for the Redhawks. 6 wins, all 6 coming when SEMO holds the other team under 70.

semoredhawk: Well I was going take a jab at SIU for their recent struggles as well.

Roth, do you always write a book when you email during a game? lol..

Alright Bam-Bam, just for you..

It's all the King's fault. If he'd just build the basketball team their own facility so they can practice on the same floor and the same type of floor that they'll play games on maybe we wouldn't have these injuries! It's all his fault! Open the wallet King!

Yes... it is mainly in jest...

I'm sure the Carr Group can do some more research for us....and take us for even more money.

I wasn't proposing any conspiracy at all. I just seemed to remember Coach Shumate complaining about the floor several times and threw it out there for general discussion. And please don't associate me with the "loony left." I'm about as conservative as they come!

BB, I don't think anyone was making that jump, yet.. :)

No no no Sportsdoc -- the loony left of the blog was heading into full conspiracy theory mode. I wish you would have waited a week or two to post this because it was only a matter of time before someone put this on Dobbins. Darn, I was really anticipating how the loony left was going to tie this to Dobbins, and Sportsdoc goes and ruins everything. Shame on you!

Basketball represents the sport that is second in number of injuries per hours of participation. The rate of injuries is much higher during games because of increased intensity. But the number of injuries are higher at practice because of the volume of practice relative to games. The injuries to date are not out of bounds relative to the expected number of injuries that would occur in a single season. This season is "typical", although some high profile players have been injuried which obviously can change team performance. Time for everyone to step up and bloom where and in what you are planted!

Nutt should get somebody to do some research on Injuries. It does seem like its always in practice. Which make sense - you are in practice a lot more than in games. Let some Grad student do a paper - see if there is some trend.

Where & How the injury took place....

Coach Nutt will upgrade the talent..you can be sure of that. This year is just a "laying the foundation" year.

No one is talking about Siu, except you of course.

Good to see the Salukis struggling these days, even at the SIU Arena, which used to be a very tough place to play.

You would think that IF Nutt can really upgrade our talent next year, we just might be able to hang with SIU at their place.

I'm pretty sure they have not practiced on the Show Me Center floor all week. I know the men's team the last few days has practiced in the Rec Center. I also know that there is a difference in the floors between the Rec Center courts and the arena floor. That can sometimes lead to injury changing surfaces.

Saw Coach Nutt as he was headed back to the office today after practice. He seemed very upbeat and excited for tomorrow night. They're working hard and it's going to pay off.

I'm not sure how much they actually practice on the main floor. I think they practice more in the rec. However, it is interesting that they get a lot of foot/leg/knee injuries. I mean there is some solid data on that.

Does anybody else remember Coach Shumate complaining about the condition of the portable basketball floor? I seem to remember him commenting several times that it had bad spots and was going to cause injuries. Just a thought put out there for consideration because we sure do seem to get more than our share of injuries and a great deal of them happen during practice on that floor, not during game situations.

Starting to sound like the 2002 to 2005 season
