Johnson will apparently stay at SEMO

Posted Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at 6:37 PM

It looks like the SEMO men's basketball program won't be losing one of its key players after all.

SEMO coach Dickey Nutt said sophomore forward Nino Johnson informed Nutt that he would remain with the Redhawks instead of transfer to a junior college.

Johnson signed a letter of intent with Northeast Mississippi Community College on May 15 during a ceremony on the Northeast campus in Booneville, Miss.

But junior college letters of intent are nonbinding regarding NCAA institutions and Johnson apparently had a change of heart about leaving SEMO.

Nutt said Johnson will report for summer school at SEMO on June 10.

Johnson could still change his mind again and decide to play for the junior college he recently signed with but Nutt said he doesn't anticipate that happening.

Hey Marty,

What criteria does a player use to make his college choice? I hate see players change school so frequently.

I would guess that players take many things into consideration, but one of the biggest is the coaching staff. Coaches try to form strong relationships with players in the recruiting process. If the bonds are strong enough then that might sway a player to come to that particular school.

Facilities, tradition and success of the program are other factors, along with the academic side of things.

On the bigger levels, the chance to play for a national title or a deep NCAA tournament run and being on TV as much as possible are factors but that doesn't really have anything to do with SEMO's level

According to a post on semofans.com he is on campus for Summer classes

I agree with you, Grussman. The fact that Southeast got a kid so highly rated (out of high school) was huge! I'm glad he's returning (or not leaving. He is going to be a force in the next few years.

Good news! With their group of returning players and continued recruiting improvements I think the future looks pretty bright.
