Who earns Week 1 honors?
Posted Thursday, September 2, at 2:47 AM
So in the office, we've been kicking around the question of which Central player was the player of the game in Week 1. I think it's between three guys -- Christian Cavaness, James Poindexter and Deonte Jenkins.
Cavanass accounted for three touchdowns -- two passing and one rushing -- but he only threw seven passes and completed four. You can't argue with his efficiency since he averaged 29.5 yards per completion.
Then you've got Poindexter, who gained 151 yards on the ground. But that came on just six carries. Again, great efficiency. He made the most of his carries, averaging 25.2 yards per carry. He didn't score.
My final candidate is Jenkins, who finished with two 46-yard receptions and rushed for 15 yards. One of those 46-yarders went for a touchdown.
So who do you think was Central's top performer in Week 1? Is it one of these three or someone else? Get in your vote now since we're closing in on kickoff for Week 2.
What almost wasn't for Central football The Tigers looked impressive in their 41-6 victory over New Madrid on Friday, but there was one play that could have changed everything. On the first play of the game from the line of scrimmage, New Madrid quarterback G'Darius Stevenson threw a pass to a wide-open receiver. There wasn't a Tigers defender near the kid. He likely would have scored a 75-yard touchdown and the Tigers would have trailed 7-0 less than a minute in...
Nathan Norman joins Central FB staff Nathan Norman was hired as an assistant football coach for the Central Tigers during Monday's school board meeting. Norman, a former assistant coach at Jackson, will teach physical education and health at Central. Norman will join coach Rich Payne's staff for the 2010 season. The Tigers went 0-10 last season, so there's plenty of room for improvement this season...
SEMO Conference baseball tourney: Let's play three And that's the tournament. Notre Dame captures the title after Hiett worked out of some trouble in the seventh. Check out Tuesday's Southeast Missourian for a full recount of the final day of the tourney. Thanks for following along. FINAL: Notre Dame 7, Kennett 4...
Scott County Central's big advantage One thing caught my eye while watching the two Class 1 state semifinals Thursday night in Columbia. The Braves are the only team that pushes the tempo. They almost never walk the ball up the floor. If they get a rebound, Bobby Hatchett and the rest of the team take off running. Hatchett had joked that the team better be able to play at a frenetic pace with all the running that coach Kenyon Wright makes the team do in practice...
Notre Dame girls advance The Notre Dame girls basketball team knocked off Farmington 73-62 in a Class 4 sectional game tonight. The Bulldogs built a 19-point lead but ran into serious foul trouble. But they regrouped to knock off the Knights. Notre Dame advances to Saturday's state quarterfinal game. The Bulldogs will tip off at 6 p.m. at the Farmington Civic Center with a trip to the final four on the line. We'll have more on the game later...
Which team is the best -- Scott County Central, Sikeston or Notre Dame? It's time for the discussion to begin. Sikeston is 0-2 against Notre Dame and SCC, but the scuttlebutt is that Sikeston played it's worst game of the season against Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Notre Dame is 2-0 against Sikeston and SCC, but it seems to get the least respect out of the three teams...
Plenty of tickets remain for rematch I just talked with Shannon Buford at the Show Me Center, and he said more than 3,200 tickets have been sold for Wednesday's rematch between Scott County Central and Sikeston. The boys teams will square off at 7:30 p.m. The girls teams will play at 6:30 p.m...
My team will win the Christmas Tournament I know we're only two days deep into the tournament, but there have been some outstanding performances so far. So I'm going to pick my team that I'd want to win the whole shootin' match. I'm picking six and hoping my team doesn't get into foul trouble. If it does, we'll be in trouble...
Day 2 night session at the Christmas Tourney We've got some great games on tap tonight, including Jackson vs. Central. I think there's the potential for some great action. The Advance vs. Charleston game should be a fun one to watch, too. Oak Ridge hasn't lost a game but faces its toughest test in Notre Dame. ...
Best chance at an upset As soon as I saw the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament bracket, I started trying to figure out which teams have the best chance of pulling off a first-round upset. I think there are several intriguing possibilities. The first three games went according to plan, but things could change once we get to the last four games today...
Bolivar beats Notre Dame 2-1 in OT in state semifinal soccer action The winning goal came off one of Magana's throw-ins. More later. Off to talk to players. --- Bolivar has started making a charge here in the first overtime. The Liberators have tried kicking it long and running under it, but it hasn't been working as well as it it did in the first half...
Volleyball updates For those yearning for some sectional volleyball updates, here's what we've got so far. We'll update them as the day goes on... Cor Jesu knocked off Jackson 25-8, 25-15 in the sectional round. Notre Dame is headed to the final four. The Bulldogs knocked off De Soto in two games then took care of Rosati-Kain in the quarters...
ND STATE CHAMPS FINAL Reinagel threw a perfect game to lead her team to the state title. Thanks for following along. Check Sunday's Missourian for a full recap of the action. I'm off to talk with some players then make the long drive back to Cape. Mid 7th: ND 3, Kirksville 0...
Notre Dame's title game opponent Notre Dame will face a familiar foe in Saturday's Class 3 title game at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will play Kirksville, which they beat 3-2 in 13 innings in last year's state semifinal. Jackie Bishop returns as the Tigers' pitcher. Notre Dame collected 12 hits over 13 innings against her last year. ...
FINAL: ND 4, Platte County 2 at Class 3 final four That's all for the semifinal as Notre Dame wins 4-2. Check back later at semoball.com and semissourian.com this afternoon for a story on today's game. I'm off to talk with some players. Thanks for following the action. --- Mid 7th: ND4 Platte 2 Pypes rebounded to shut down the Bulldogs with three strikeouts...
Notre Dame at the final four The Southeast Missourian office in St. Joseph, Mo., is open. Notre Dame plays Platte County at 11:30 a.m. today. For those who were thinking about heading over for Saturday's action, be aware that the times have changed from earlier in the week. The Class 3 title game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, while the third-place game is scheduled to be played at noon Saturday. But it's wet over here, just like Cape. Hopefully the games go off as scheduled...
Notre Dame's quarterfinal softball opponent The Bulldogs will face John F. Kennedy in Saturday's Class 3 state quarterfinal. Kennedy, which boasts a 21-2 record, defeated Affton 9-0 on Friday in a sectional contest. Kennedy's two losses this season have come against Ursuline, 3-2, and St. Dominic, 2-0, according to stltoday. Notre Dame's two losses were to Hillsboro, 5-1, and Lindbergh, 6-5...
The local 1-2 pitching punch I got the chance to get out of the office a few times this week to catch some playoff softball action, and I got to see first-hand the dominance of two local pitchers. Kelly's Danielle Dock and Notre Dame's Lauren Reinagel looked sharp in their outings. ...
What was Grandview thinking? One of the things I love about covering sports is you never know what you're going to see. But two plays in Friday's Chaffee vs. Grandview football game leave me scratching my head. Grandview punted on third down TWICE. That's right, not once, but twice. ...
