I don't blame Redhawks fans for not showing up
Posted Monday, January 5, at 12:03 AM
As I was listening to the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament basketball games on 1220 AM KGIR, I heard Todd Bonacki and Jess Bolen lament the lack of fans at Southeast Missouri State basketball games. Bonacki and Bolen talked about how many fans turned out for the Christmas Tournament games, and how it would be great if that many fans turned out for Redhawks games.

I can appreciate their point. It would be great to see the Show Me Center full for Redhawks games. The place would be rockin'. There's no doubt about it. I'd love to see it too.

But that's wishful thinking. There's no reason to show up to the Show Me Center these days. I get in for free with a media pass, and I don't get very excited to see the product on the floor.

It has nothing to do with the personalities. Zac Roman is easy to work with, insightful and knows basketball. The players I've talked with are nice guys. The problem is that there isn't enough talent to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Southeast's first problem is that it's using about seven scholarship players. Even if Roman wanted to try someone else, he can't. His options are way too limited. With injuries, transfers and two recruits unable to make the grade, the cupboard is bare.

Second, Southeast sports some nice role players. Kenard Moore can shoot 3-pointers, but he's struggled to handle the pressure of the team leaning on him to provide a lot of offense. Moore appears to be a guy you count on to come off the bench, knock down some 3s and give your team a boost. He doesn't appear to be a guy who carries an offense. Calvin Williams is putting together a nice season, but imagine if you had a real center, someone a few inches taller and a few pounds heavier who could bang with anyone. Then you move Williams to power forward and I bet his numbers would increase. Bijon Jones is the lone healthy point guard on the roster. How are you supposed to win with that setup?

The truth is that a winning product would bring fans back to the Show Me Center. When I was an undergrad at Loyola University Chicago, I was a member of a committee charged with increasing attendance at men's basketball games. We tried all kinds of gimmicks, give-a-ways, promotions and even free food. Everyone we spoke with said that a winning product would bring fans in. When I was a graduate student at Syracuse University, I saw first-hand the effect of winning. Students and people in the community wanted to go to games because they knew they'd see a quality product. I don't expect a Syracuse-level product, but a team that competes with the best in the OVC isn't too much to ask for in Cape Girardeau.

Until the men's basketball program fields a team that's competitive in the OVC, fans can't be blamed for not showing up. There's too much going on these days, and the cheapest ticket adult ticket is $9. I appreciate the effort of the players, but I don't want to see a blowout. It's no fun watching a team get lambasted. If it's between a movie or a Redhawks loss, I'm checking out the newest movie. When there's something worth watching at the Show Me Center, I'll be the first one to call on fans to get off their rears and get to games. Until then, I can't blame them.

Christmas Tournament: Who's the biggest bench screamer
Posted Monday, December 29, at 3:20 PM

I commented in an earlier post about Meadow Heights coach Tom Brown's enthusiasm while his team played Scott City in the first game of the day. I can't tell you how many photos the Southeast Missourian photographers take of a coach's reaction during a game...

Christmas Tournament: Bell City vs. Oran
Posted Monday, December 29, at 1:26 PM

This one is over, and the Cubs beat the Eagles 56-48. Oran struggled from the field in the final quarter, going 6 of 18 (33 percent). The Eagles shot 37 percent (19 of 52) from the field for the game. The Cubs went 9 of 15 from the free-throw line in the final quarter, and 3 of 8 from the field. Bell City shot 48 percent (20 of 42) for the game...

Christmas Tournament: Rams and Panthers open the action
Posted Monday, December 29, at 12:08 PM

My apologies. The Internet went down here at the Show Me Center, but we're back up and running. So Scott City pulled out the 59-50 victory over Meadow Heights. The Rams pulled away with an impressive third quarter, but the never-say-die Panthers kept battling back in the fourth quarter. In fact, Meadow Heights got the deficit down to five points in the closing minute, but it couldn't pull off major comeback No. 2...

Throw us a bone, Mozliak, because pro sports teams around here stink right now
Posted Monday, December 29, at 1:00 AM

Let's put all our cards on the table. I'm getting tired of this junk. There aren't any good professional sports teams in these parts these fdays. What's in the water? First we've got the Rams. The only reason they weren't the laughingstock of the NFL is because the Lions went 0-16. ...

Christmas Tournament: Potential guards showdown
Posted Friday, December 26, at 11:21 AM

During halftime of the Scott County vs. Delta game, I was talking with Erik Sean, the play-by-play guy for Southeast Missouri State, and we were discussing the Scott County guards. He mentioned that he'd like to see a team try to pressure the Braves' guards...

Christmas Tournament: The lies we tell
Posted Friday, December 26, at 10:42 AM

The second game of the tournament is under way, and Notre Dame has opened a 22-6 lead on Woodland after one quarter. The Bulldogs warmed up on the side of the court where I'm seated. I was surprised to see that seniors Austin Greer and John Unterreiner are the same height. I didn't have to look at the rosters to see it. I saw it with my own eyes...

Christmas Tournament: The lesser-known Brave
Posted Friday, December 26, at 9:28 AM

Scott County is doing what most expected -- running away from Delta in the first round of the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament. As I sit courtside, the usual cast of characters are putting together a solid game. Drew Thomas slammed home a dunk. Otto Porter is grabbing rebounds and putting back misses...

This year's dark horse
Posted Thursday, December 25, at 11:47 PM

The gifts are opened and it's time to concentrate on the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament. You've filled out your bracket, right? You're in the contest to win a $300 gift certificate, right? OK, so Scott County enters as the heavy favorite. ...

Saint Francis Holiday Classic
Posted Thursday, December 18, at 5:47 PM

Jackson holds on for the 57-52 victory in a tight ballgame. Jackson leads Perryville 48-39 at the end of the third quarter. The Indians keep opening a little breathing room, only to see the Pirates slice the lead. It's been a good ballgame. It's halftime of the final game, and Jackson leads Perryville 29-22...
