A little on Scott County's next opponent

Posted Thursday, March 19, 2009, at 9:17 PM

The Braves will face Newtown-Harris in Saturday's Class 1 state title game. The Tigers beat Chadwick 75-64 in a close game Thursday.

Newtown-Harris is the team that beat Jefferson in the sectional round, and it will look to take down its second giant when it plays Scott County.

The Tigers sounded confident after their victory. The coach, Tim Cool, said his guards have carved up most pressing defenses this season and that teams usually quickly abandon the press because it's ineffective against his team.

If that's not a challenge to the Braves' defense, I don't know what is. There have been times this season when the Braves have gone away from the press. The big question will be whether Newtown-Harris can score with the Braves.

The Tigers had three players finish with 14 points against Chadwick. KJ Cool leads the team with an 18.5 points per game average. Canaan Fairley is the only other player to average more than 10 points (11.9).

Newtown-Harris did connect on 159 3-pointers through district play, and added nine in Thursday's win, so that's something to keep an eye on.

An interesting note about Newtown-Harris is that it has an enrollment of 43 students. A friend from the newspaper in St. Joseph told me that there are 20 boys in the school, and 14 of them play on the basketball team. I guess you might as well recruit the whole school to play, right?

Check Saturday's Southeast Missorian for a more in-depth preview of the state championship game.

So get in your predictions now. Who wins Saturday? Does Scott County get state title No. 13 or does Newtown-Harris cap the Cinderella season?

I am taking SCC by 25. Teams that like to win by the "3" will sometimes die by the "3". Close game in the first half, until the Braves pressure finally gets to them. Then again, Memphis nearly bowed out yesterday if some kid hadn't hit 10 3's, so I guess anything is possible!

Let's see, their only loss by 10 points is to a team called "Glasgow". Is'nt that the same team SCC just beat by 34 points? I'm taking SCC by 30 points!

Yeah, but KJ Cool has to be the best name for a guard in the tournament. Well, maybe Bobby Hatchett is a pretty good name too.

I am kinda partial to Bobby...

SCC will only have trouble with Newtown if they are on fire from 3. Even so, SCC will eventually wear them down and they'll lost their legs in the 2nd half. SCC by 22.

Being from a small town only makes Newtown boys stronger!! Win or lose Tigers are #1 in my heart!! They will fight till the last second!! Small town boys don't give up!!
