Bolivar beats Notre Dame 2-1 in OT in state semifinal soccer actionPosted Friday, November 20, 2009, at 3:17 PM
The winning goal came off one of Magana's throw-ins. More later. Off to talk to players.
Bolivar has started making a charge here in the first overtime. The Liberators have tried kicking it long and running under it, but it hasn't been working as well as it it did in the first half.
Notre Dame is controlling the ball for the majority of the early going here in the first OT.
For those who forget, it's a golden-goal overtime. It's two 15-minute overtime sessions with a golden goal. If it's still tied, it goes to a shootout. I'm sure Notre Dame fans remember last year's final four, where the Bulldogs lost to Helias on penalty kicks in the semifinals.
And surprise, surprise, we're going to overtime. It only seems fitting for the Bulldogs. All of Notre Dame's postseason games except the state quarterfinal went to overtime. Notre Dame looked sharp over the final 15 minutes of the second half.
Notre Dame is the team creating the chances late in the second half. The Bulldogs have gotten some decent shots on goal but haven't been able to convert.
This time Bolivar's defense came up with a stop on a shot by the Bulldogs. Bolivar's goalie was down and the Bolivar defender made the stop.
Notre Dame created a decent chance off a corner, but the shot sailed over the net. A diving save by the Bolivar keeper let to the corner.
Both teams are trying to gain control, and both have been able to get a couple decent chances. It's getting late (I can't see the clock because of the sun) and every small run is greeted by lots of cheering.
Bolivar just tied it off a corner kick. It was the third consecutive corner kick for the Liberators and they finally converted on the third one.
Joe Froemsdorf jut buried a shot from right in front off a pass from Jack Mocherman. It came just minutes after Froemsdorf made a nice play to keep the game tied. Holloway was down and Bolivar took a shot, which hit Froemsdorf in the open goal mouth. Notre Dame now enjoys a 1-0 lead.
Notre Dame has created a couple of decent chances but the BUlldogs are struggling to get quality shots. We're still scoreless.
The second half is just under way and Bolivar is dominating the play. Ke-Ke Kellum was shaken up on a play.
Bolivar's Matt Magana nearly had a breakaway on a counterattack but the BUlldogs managed to catch up to the Liberators speedster and thwart the chance. It's halftime and it's scoreless here in Fenton.
This time it was Bolivar's chance at a shot with Holloway down, but the Liberators failed to get one. We're still scoreless.
Notre Dame just had a golden chance after the ball bounced past the goalie, but the Bolivar defense spoiled the opportunity.
Notre Dame got some action in the box off a corner kick but couldn't get off a clean shot. Huber just did his first flip throw-in. For those wondering, he did take a running start.
Both teams make three substitutions apiece. Bolivar's leading scorer, Matt Magana, is an impressive player. he's the one who does the flip throw-ins for the Liberators. Notre Dame hasn't been able to get much going here in the early going.
Ethan Huber has some competition. Bolivar has a player who can do the flip throw-in as well. the difference is that Bolivar's player doesn't take a running start. Neither team really has controlled the pace yet. They're still feeling each other out.
The Bulldogs and Bolivar are about to get started in their Class 2 state semifinal. It's gorgeous up here in Fenton. The teams are playing on one of the side artificial turf fields. Notre Dame sophomore James Holloway is in goal -- no surprise there. A good crowd for an 11 a.m. start. Keep checking back for updates throughout the game.
