Best chance at an upset

Posted Saturday, December 26, 2009, at 1:10 PM

As soon as I saw the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament bracket, I started trying to figure out which teams have the best chance of pulling off a first-round upset. I think there are several intriguing possibilities.

The first three games went according to plan, but things could change once we get to the last four games today.

First is the Advance (No. 5 seed) vs. Delta (No. 12) tilt. The Bobcats are an improved team this season. Delta has been sticking with some teams and could give the Hornets a test. I don't think we're likely to see an upset here because the Hornets have a little too much firepower.

The Central (No. 6) vs. Leopold (No. 11) matchup is another solid game. Central has looked good in the early going, which leads me to think the Tigers will roll past the Wildcats. But you can't count out a Shawn Kinder-coached team. I think Central has proven in the early going this season that it's better than a typical No. 6 seed.

I think the Oak Ridge (No. 7) vs. Bell City (No. 10) game has the potential to be the best of the first round. The Blue Jays will need to figure out how to stop Bell City's Skylor Blackler, the Cubs' 7-footer. The Blue Jays feature a pair of potent scorers in Garret Light and Brett Thomas. It will be interesting to see if Light and Thomas try to attack Blackler to get him into foul trouble. I think this game has the best potential for a first-round upset.

The final game of the opening round features Oran (No. 8) vs. Meadow Heights (No. 9). I think it's pretty much a pick-em game, so I wouldn't really count a Panthers victory as an upset. But if you're feeling strongly about it, I'll let you pick it as the biggest potential upset.

So register your biggest potential upset now before the later games get started. Who do you see as the most vulnerable better seed in the first round?

I think your joking about the Oak Ridge-Bell City game. Oak Ridge has already proven their dominance over the Cubs earlier this year 71-59 on December 15.

Yeah, i have to agree with the Zalmanian, even though it hurts to do so. I was told by a friend from Oak Ridge that it wasn't even really a game once they figured out how to guard Blackler. They were up by 20 or more when Light and Thomas came out of the game. Also, the box score said that Light only had 8 points, i bet he doubles that tonight.

You're right Kevin, Bell City might have pulled off an upset if Oak Ridge had played their subs the whole game. 38-10 at half time was quite a show by Oak Ridge.

As for Coach Miller, I can't be any happier that he is no longer the coach at our school. I understand you play the game to win, but calling a timeout and putting the press once Oak Ridge put their subs in when they were up by 40 is rediculous. Oak Ridge showed quickly that it didn't matter when they put their starters back in and scored about 15 straight points. Yes, you can beat their subs, but you have to be smart enough to understand that at any time they can put their starters back in and press you again.

Good job Coach Miller in making yourself look like a fool. I wish we played in this tournament, as it is so much fun to come and watch, even though there was only 1 good game yesterday.

Kevin Winters Morriss' response:
When you're wrong, you're wrong, and boy was I wrong. Tonight's Blue Jays game against Notre Dame will be a good test for Oak Ridge.

He did the same thing to Bernie during the JV game...

I would think most coaches would do whatever they thought was necessary to try & win even if that means pressing the subs. I disagree with Zalmabulldogmom.
