PB Showdown final
M.J. Brown scored 25 points to lead Union City to the title late Saturday night, beating Harrison 64-59.
A night after scoring 92 points in a come-from-behind win, Union City (16-0) surged ahead in the second half and hit 9-of-14 free throws in the final quarter to win.
Nik Brooks, who joined Brown on the all-tournament team, scored 14 points while Coby Andre added 10.
Harrison, which finished fifth last year, was led by Kevin Jackson and Ryan Bayersdorfer who scored 14 points each. Matt Sundberg, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored 11 while Gerald Smith added 12 for the Hoyas (10-3).
Harrison led 15-13 after one quarter and 32-29 at halftime.
Brown finished the tournament as the scoring lead by averaging 30.7 points. Maplewood's Bryant Allen, who scored 40 in a triple-overtime win Saturday, was second at 28.7. Raytown South's Dominique Newton (27.0), Sikeston's Michael Porter (23.0) and Liberty Tech's Tarvis Johnson (19.7) were also named to the all-tournament team.
Union City finished fourth last year, fifth in 2005 and third in 2004.
THIRD PLACE Dominique Newton scored 19 points and Jason Simmons added 14 as Raytown South beat Liberty Tech 69-63.
Tarvis Johnson led Liberty with 17 points while Jay Greer and Marlin Dotson added 14 points each.
The Cardinals led by four after the first and second quarters before taking a 51-43 lead into the fourth. After missing 15 free throws in a semifinal loss Friday, South hit 10-of-20 including 7-of-12 in the final quarter.
FIFTH PLACEMichael Porter scored 28 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead Sikeston past Poplar Bluff, 70-56.
Juquain Wiggins had 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-2), who finished the game by scoring 10 unanswered points after the Mules pulled with 60-54 with 4:13 left.
Sikeston had 20 offensive rebounds and hit 22-of-24 free throws.
Chris Kilgore led the Mules with 19 points while Jordan Chaligoj added 11 and Riley Raulston scored 10.
It was the second meeting this season between the SEMO Conference rivals with the Bulldogs winning the first and hosting the next game Feb. 1.
SEVENTH PLACE Nobody wanted to leave the Showdown winless Saturday.
Maplewood-Richmond Heights beat Little Rock Mills 103-98 in three overtimes to match the longest game in the 21-year history of tournament.
Bryant Allen scored 40 points to lead the Blue Devils, hitting two free throws with 22.3 seconds left in the third overtime. Michael Jackson, who scored 28 for Mills, missed a 3 in the closing seconds.
The Comets trailed by 14 in the first half and 41-31 at halftime but closed within five after three quarters. Chase Norwood hit two free throws to tie the game at 69-69 with 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter while Bryton Hobbs, who scored 27 for Maplewood, missed a 3.
Travis Howard's steal gave Maplewood the final shot of the first overtime but it was blocked and Richard Bunting missed a layup on the other end at the buzzer.
Mills took a six point lead following Bunting's two free throws with 52 seconds left in the second overtime, but Allen hit a 3 from the top of the key and Bryton Hobbs followed a Mills miss with a 3 from the corner to tie the game at 91-91.
Allen missed an off-balanced shot at the buzzer.
Maplewood pulled ahead in the third overtime when Toni King got a putback with 2:23 left and Allen hit 6-of-8 free throws over the final 91 seconds.
The third place game in 1991 also went to three overtimes.

Raytown South is an example of a team that wanted an overnight tournament against tough opponents. The process of finding teams has already started.
