Tyler's toe & Bluff-Dexter is ON
As of 10 a.m. the game is on, however, it will be a varsity-only contest starting at 6 p.m. tonight in Dexter.
Meanwhile, I found this on the Tar Heels' walking wounded that included something on Tyler Hansbrough:
He spent Monday getting treatment on his right big toe.Wait a minute. "Getting treatment" doesn't do it justice. Let Hansbrough describe how his toe was drilled and then drained. First, a warning: this gets a little graphic.
"They have a little burner they stick in there that gets all the blood out," Hansbrough said. "I'll tell you what, though. The part that hurts is when they numb it with a needle at the base of the toe. They took a chunk out of it."
Tuesday night, in the wake of 23 points, seven rebounds, and a series of collisions in the paint, his toe was a bizarre whitish-yellow.
Also, UNC coach Roy Williams was at a loss for what to call Hansbrough's final shot Tuesday night as described by Robbi Pickeral, of the News & Observer.
With 52 seconds left, Virginia cut it to 73-71 when reserve Calvin Baker buried a 3-pointer.But on UNC's next possession, Hansbrough -- who had 17 points by halftime but was scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the second half -- swished a familiar shot from the lane with 21 seconds left to make it 75-71.
"We like to think that is a jump-hook,'' Williams said, describing what has become the All-America's signature move, "but it is not. Shotput, jump hook, Hansbrough Special, whatever you call it -- but our goal was to come down and spread and try to use the clock and try to go in to him inside. We went to him inside and, needless to say, he delivered for us and made a big bucket."
I didn't see the shot (only saw the first half) but I know it well. I think it was Tyler's older brother Greg who perfected that shot. If you don't know Greg's story, it was told here and most recently here. I think that shot looks like 'Greger' to me. It's almost like Tyler wills it into the net.
