Brian Rosener is the keeper of the Semoball Cup which is presented to the school with the most successful season. It is based on a formula that takes into account the combined winning percentage of all sports teams plus bonus points for advancement in postseason play for both teams and individuals. The bonus points are divided by the number of teams a school fields. Rosener has been the sports editor for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo. since December 2001. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he attended Lindbergh High School and Webster University. He is married to Jennifer, a Poplar Bluff native, has a son Jack and a dog named Satchel who stands in for his @semoballBrian photo.

The race for the SEMO Conference title just got interesting.

Poplar Bluff rallied from a 34-22 halftime deficit Friday night to beat Sikeston, 70-65, in a battle of the last two unbeaten teams in SEMO play.

Poplar Bluff senior Riley Raulston scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, hitting three straight 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter. Freshman guard Kendrick McCain, who had scored five points in seven varsity games this season, scored eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from 3-point range.

Michael Porter led Sikeston with 17 points. Eli Jackson had 14 points and seven rebounds and Niquavious Dixon added 13 points. Juqualin Wiggins had six points and nine assists for the Bulldogs (14-3, 3-1 SEMO).

The Mules (13-7, 4-0) used a 17-3 run to open the second half, taking the lead on Chis Kilgore's putback with 3:37 left in the third. Jackson quickly answered for Sikeston, which broke a 41-41 tie with Will Holifield's 3-pointer.

The Bulldogs took a 48-45 lead into the fourth but turned the ball over on the opening possession. The teams then traded scores for the next 4 minutes, during which McCain hit a 3 and Raulston hit a trio of 3s, the final one giving the Mules a 61-54 lead with 4:11 to go.

Porter answered with a 3 from straightaway, then got a steal and dunk to cut Poplar Bluff's lead to 61-59.

Following a pair of free throws by Greg Coble, the Poplar Bluff junior pulled down a missed shot and quickly pushed the ball up the floor. Coble hit Raulston with a pass for a fastbreak layin for a six-point lead and 3:06 to go.

Porter's free throws later pulled Sikeston closer and a steal by Cal Lane led to Jackson's bucket got the Bulldogs to within 65-63 with 1:58 left.

Lane again got another steal but Sikeston came away empty and Coble scored with 53 seconds left off a pass from Kilgore. Jackson's back door layin off a Holifield pass cut Poplar Bluff's lead to three and Raulston missed a one-and-one opportunity with 30 seconds left.

Lane missed a jumper and Jay Raulston pulled down the rebound, getting fouled and hitting two free throws with 11.4 seconds left. Following a missed 3 by Sikeston, Jay Raulston sank another free throw to set the final score and a wild celebration.

Poplar Bluff still has conference road games at New Madrid County Central, which has already beaten the Mules twice this season, and at Charleston. The Mules travel to NMCC on Thursday then host Notre Dame a day later.

Homcoming night didn't start well for the Mules as Sikeston scored the first 11 points and led 15-1 midway through the opening quarter. Eight of those points came off Poplar Bluff turnovers against Sikeston's press. The Mules didn't hit their first field goal until 3:54 mark of the first quarter, missing their first four shots, before scoring eight straight points. Riley Raulston started the rally with a steal leading to Jake White's 3-pointer. A pair of steals by Jay Raulston also led to buckets but the Mules still trailed 17-10 heading into the second quarter.

Todd Bullington set up Jay Raulston's dunk and his offensive rebound led to Kilgore's bucket to pull the Mules to within 19-14. Sikeston then went on a 11-4 run to push the lead back to double digits. The run was highlighted by Wiggins' half-court lob to Lane for a dunk and a 30-18 lead with 2:43 left in the half.

Kilgore hit a shot falling back in the closing seconds of the half to pull the Mules to within 34-22.

Jay Raulston had 12 points, 10 rebounds, two steals, two blocks and two assists for the Mules while Kilgore had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and seven rebounds. Poplar Bluff shot 68.1 percent from the field in the second half, including 7-of-12 from 3-point range after hitting 9-of-22 shots in the first half and missing 11 free throws. Poplar Bluff hit 8-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Sikeston's pressure defense in the first half helped build a lead but it also got the Bulldogs in foul trouble, sending the Mules to the line 14 times in the first half. The Bulldogs shot 51.8 percent from the field including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, but got outrebounded, 29-26, and had as many turnovers as the Mules.

Discussion for the night ... free throw margin.

Fans love to talk about free throw margins, especially after a road loss. Tonight is a great example because Poplar Bluff hit 14-of-28 free throws to Sikeston's 5-of-11. Of course, stats can be misleading, here's why:

Mules shot 28 free throws but 5 attempts came in the final minute when Sikeston fouled to extend the game (leaving 23 attempts left to account for). The Mules also got to the free-throw line 5 times after an offensive rebound (take away those attempts if the Bulldogs get those rebounds and there's 18 attempts left). Take away the fouls following a turnover (a make-them-earn-it foul) that takes away four more attempts for the Mules, leaving 14 attempts.

Sikeston shot 11 free throws, but two were and-1s, so if the Bulldogs missed the shot and went to the line for two free throws instead, add two more free throws to the total (13 attempts). One trip came after an offensive rebound (back down to 11 attempts) leaving a margin of three free throws. That's not a very large margin considering that the Bulldogs pressed early, picking up fouls while going for the steal, while the Mules also got to the line by drawing fouls on shots.

It should be noted that each team got fouled on one 3-point shot and that the Mules missed three one-and-ones, so the margin could have been six.

The biggest factor in the game was the 3-point shooting by the Mules in the second half. They hit 7-of-12 shots from long range and outscored Sikeston 48-31 in the second half.

Regarding the free throws...the numbers were as lopsided as they look. I realize you are trying to make it sound better, but the numbers don't lie. The team fouls were 22 to 10. Even with that said, Sikeston still have won, but they did not. I'm not sure why they did not press the majority of the 2nd half..I guess foul trouble. When they did press at the end of the game, they got several quick turnovers. I'm not making excuses for Sikeston...Raulston had a heck of a game and got hot at the right time. He is a very good player. PB played inconsistent in the first half and very well in the 2nd half. Lamont is an excellent coach.

I'm not trying to make anything sound better, I'm just saying the numbers don't always add up. If the Bulldogs press, they're more likely to draw a foul then if they don't. Since they were behind in the final seconds, they had to send the Mules to the free-throw line. If a team gets an offensive rebound, they will most likely score or get sent to the line. Since the Bulldogs picked up some early fouls, they had to get out of the press.
Holifield was terribly out-coached last night. Lamont Frazier slowed the game down in the second half and Sikeston never went back to the full-court pressure defense, even when they were behind. I feel sorry for the Sikeston boys.

By the way, with one minute to go Sikeston was trapping at the half-court line and the Poplar Bluff guard stepped completely over the line with the ref 5 ft away. Five seconds later PB got an easy 2 under the basket. With 30 seconds to go Porter got the ball under the basket and was pushed completely out of bounds with no call.

Well, I know I need some cheese with the whine about the refs. Having said that I want to congratulate Lamont Frazier and the Poplar Bluff team. They did a fantastic job last night.

Not only the half court step over but how about the kick ball out of bounds by the Mules and the ball was given right back to the Mules. Or, when Riley got the inbound pass and walked about 5 steps to pat Coble on the butt, but the refs didn't see it because they had their backs turned and weren't watching the basketball. Or we could talk about the 22 fouls Sikeston was whistled for to the Mules 12. Or, the 28 free throws the Mules hot to Sikeston's 11. Should Harmon even be allowed to ref at Bluff since he used to coach there? Is called ethics. I guess he has none and it shows. He kills Sikeston everytime he hits the floor and it is obvious it's ridiculous. Then Lee Jones? Gimmie a break! He's worse than Harmon. Did he even have to take the test to become a ref or did he somehow grandfather in? Going to play at Poplar Bluff is just as bad as having to go to Farmington to play. Get ready Sikeston fans Harmon, or WOMO as they call him,(worst offical in Missouri) will be calling the game Wednesday. Everyone better stock up on the KY Jelly!

I'll grant you that. I don't know any history of any refs around here that supposedly have it out for certain teams.

What I do know is that every time Sikeston has a close game or loses, there is always a handful of fans who get on here or MoSports with some excuse. Whether or not you think that a certain ref cheats Sikeston, the only thing complaining about it after a loss does is make you look like a crybaby, plain and simple.

Look at yah-yah...I know for a fact that he's as big a Sikeston fan as anybody on here, but his first post congratulated PB on a big win. That's classy.

Now look at the 2 or 3 other folks who started complaining about foul discrepancies and other bad calls, and throwing in how hard it was to play at Farmington too (because apparently that's relevant to this game). That's not so classy.

If you are referring to me, you need to re-read my post. I gave PB credit, but I also mentioned the large discrepancy in fouls. However you look at it, there is a large difference in team fouls and free throws....period. The refs did not "lose" the game for Sikeston, but all of the PB free throws did not help the situation. I don't think that the game was poorly officiated as a whole. I thought Sikeston still should have pressed more in the 2nd half. I'll say it again...Lamont is an excellent coach.

the foul count is not always going to be even. sometimes, one team fouls more than the other. the officials did a great job with this game. did they miss a few calls BOTH ways? sure, just like any three officials would in any game. you would be hard-pressed to find any combination of three officials in our area who are better than those three. the officiating had ABSOLUTELY NO affect on the outcome of that game, period! i'm sure coach holifield would tell you the same thing.

I would like to know what some of you do for a living so we can come and watch you do your job and then get on a computer and without signing our name, tell everyone how bad you are at your job-You bash the refs, the coaches, and sometimes the players.

How easy it is to say these things about people and the jobs that they do on here -go visit Coach Holifield at the Fieldhouse and tell him how bad of job "you" think he is doing face to face. I'm sure you could find Harmon as well.

none of the officials affected the outcome of that game, for sure. the particular official you are referring to has over 20 years experience, has worked final fours, and is rated in the upper quartile of officials almost yearly. IF he had it "out for your team" like you claim, don't you think coach holifield would request that he not call any of his games? coaches know what officials are scheduled to work their games and this happens all the time. i suggest you send $45 to mshsaa and get licensed and maybe you could overthrow him as WOMO.

It was a great game by the Mules. They had there backs to the wall in the first half and fought their way back to win. Although there were a few missed calls and the fouls were a little lopsided, I really don't think anyone can say that it affected the outcome of the game. There is always one in the bunch!

Dear sportsfanatic,

I write this comment as a fan of really no school in the surrounding area, not from the area, but I am a basketball fan so I go to any game I can. I could not make the PB Sikeston game but as I have come to know SEMO high school basketball the most consistent aspect of it is very ruff play and horrible and questionable refs. So for me to say some questionable calls were not made at Bluff on homecomming would be ridiculous, but another thing I have learned is as a Sikeston fan you should not speak. For whenever Sikeston plays on home it is six on five, and you know who I am talking about. The famous JOE BILL DAVIS! Worst ref in history, who is a huge supporter of Sikeston, refs every freaking basketball game in Sikeston and umpires every baseball game in Sikeston. He is just so bad at his job, great man, but not a good ref and makes questionable call after questionable call at Sikeston. Why do you think Sikeston starts off so hot at the beginning of the year? Semo conference tournament, which is held where? At Sikeston and now they are struggling because they are playing on the road. Don't get me wrong Sikeston is a very good team, but that is just some observations I have made. So sportsfanatic cool it on blamming the refs until you stop the sixth man, no not the great fans at Sikeston, but JOE BILL

What did I say last week? Freethrows!!! that will be the final straw that kills Sikeston in any close game!

I am a Sikeston fan and there is 2 places you can always count on getting screwed with officiating when Sikeston comes to town, Poplar Bluff and Notre Dame! It has been that way since I was in school in the 80's.

Example, Sikeston plays soccer at Bluff this year and loses 2-0 on penalty kicks with an official who coach PB JV team the year before!! Notre Dame had a basketball official who was subbing as a teach and called a game against Sikeston in districts.

Yes, Joe Bill did some Sikeston games but only 3 this year and Sikeston has won how many games???

You're right, Sikeston hasn't played at home in forever. They played their first home game in nearly two months last night. However, I don't think it's fair to say Sikeston is struggling. If anything, they've fared well on the road. They ran into a very fired up PB team on the road and lost a close game. It happens.

As for Joe Bill Davis. I think he's done about 3 Sikeston games all year and one of those was at Charleston so you're wrong on that one. By the way, officials are assigned games by an association. Schools don't hire them anymore. Except in district tournaments, in which the officials are voted on by the teams in the district so you can't complain there either.
