Carr Trophy to be handed out Wednesday night
Editor's note: I'm sick and running a fever, which is why I didn't post this earlier in the week, so if anything doesn't make sense or is wrong, I'll post a Doctor's note later.
Postseason football honors will come out Wednesday with the media's all-region team as well as the All-SEMO Conference awards banquet in Poplar Bluff.
The Poplar Bluff Letter Club's Gridiron Banquet will be held at 7 p.m. at the PBHS Student Center (behind Peters Gym). The banquet, which has honored the All-SEMO Conference teams since 1948, features awards for linemen of the year, scoring champions and the Carr Trophy, giving to the most outstanding football player in Southeast Missouri.
The banquet is open to the public but dinner costs $10.
Will the Carr Trophy go to somebody from Sikeston? Or will the Bulldog backfield split the votes like the Cardinals' aces in the Cy Young voting, allowing another player to pick up the award?
Usually I'd give you give players to choose from complete with stats and reasons why each have earned the award, but all my stats are at the office so here's four off the top of my head in no order:
Wiggins, Sikeston
Jackson, Sikeston
Stevenson, NMCC
Ferguson, Bluff
Not saying one of those is the guy, but any one of those would be good picks and again, that's off the top of my stuffed-up head that's starting to spin.
Also, this week I had to submit my final AP poll vote for the season. During an earlier post this fall I wrote about voting and talked about it's not where a team starts the season in the polls but where they end up.
Back in August, two of my number 1 teams ended up winning the state title.
My first AP poll vote of the season I had Hazelwood Central No. 1 and Blue Springs No. 2 (which is how they ended up) in Class 6. I also ranked the Class 3 champ No. 1 in the preseason in Cassville. In Class 5, I didn't even rank champion Webster Groves and had runner-up Ft. Osage at No. 4, while I didn't rank Class 1 champ Penney while runner-up Valle I started off at No. 5. In Class 4, I had runner-up Helias No. 1 to start the season with Kearney ranked sixth while my Class 2 pick didn't reach the state final.
